Zik on the reactions to the creation of new states in the Eastern Region:

This 1967 excerpt describes the Eastern Nigeria Military Government’s shock at Gowon’s creation of 12 states (including Rivers State for minority groups).

It references an anonymous Enugu Radio broadcast calling 27 May “the darkest date,” and the detention of Chief Allison and Dr. Fiberesima for advocating the new state under emergency powers.

By now, the news of how a certain prince, with connection with the Tinubu's government chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, created an agency to scam Nigeria is now public.

How this scandal is not even Making front pages yet is also a testament how this government has pocketed most of our media houses are really not dependent and are eating from the hands of those it's meant to checkmate.

As the 2027 elections approaches, pressures will be mounted on the government to call for a public investigation on this matter and should it not happen, there's no gain saying that Nigerians already know who these APC criminals are and will reject them and everyone associated with it.

Comparing apples to oranges.

Adaka Boro tried to get independence. Same Ojukwu that jailed him eventually declared his own independence later, but unfortunately for Ojukwu, the Non-secession clause of Nnamdi Azikiwe held him back.

Alot of minority tribe in Nigeria are still grateful to Gowon for giving them a voice.

I only pity the unthinking and easily gullible masses. Some of them are here on this forum wallowing in abject poverty but will still buy cooking gas for 2k tomorrow. Just imagine if GEJ were the president and gas is sold for 2k/kg. They would have formed all sorts of groups and be protesting like the touts they are.

When I see people talk about State creation, I laugh. Before Gowon created states Nigeria was made up of four Regions. Each Region was made up of provinces, same way each state today is made up Local government areas today

Each Region controlled its resources and got as much as 70% of tax realised in the Region. The whole essence of Regions was that they were near autonomous of the Federal government and this made the centre relatively weak, as it should be in a true federation. The centre had to be weak so that no part of Nigeria would be able to use it to dominate the rest of Nigeria

Gowons state creation was a well calculated action to make the North masters of Nigeria. Gowon abolished the 4 Regions and created 12 new states to replace them, using Decree 14. He then abolished resource control with Decree 15

This made the centre very powerful and would cause much of the problems we have today. While some people were happy to have their own state, they failed to realise that if you are not in control of your resources, you are just another slave of the Federal government

It was worse for the minorities of the old Eastern Region. They got their states, but their oil and gas wealth was stolen by the North. If you were already governing your self in your province, covering your self in a seperate state makes no difference. Today, these states get 15 percent derivation when they were getting as much as 70% during the time of the Region. Over 80% of their oil wells are in the hands of Northerners and the top 10 positions in NNPC are staffed by Northerners

At some point, they even formed Niger Delta militancy to fight for crumbs coming from their own resources.

Gowon gave them states, stole theor resources and autonomy, made the centre strong enough for the North to dominate the rest of Nigeria, and they were clapping like happy slaves grin

This was the motive behind the Jan 15 coup which was to disrupt the Federal Parliament from granting the minority people a referendum for COR region out of the Eastern region.

Minority people tried to get the notion passed at the regional house but the Ibo speaker and Ibo majority always shut them down

Zik even warned the Ibo parliamentarians in the Eastern regional house never to allow the minority people leave the Eastern region.

The minority people then took their plight to the federal house and secured the support of Western , Midwestern and Northern Federal MPs to grant them their referendum

The house was on Christmas break and scheduled to resume a few days in late January.

That is why the Ibo coupists struck to not only eliminate every regional leader but to impose themselves as supreme leader in a centrist system..

When Adaka Boro heard the news of the coup and who had emerged as HoS after Deputy President , Orizu (an Ibo man) who was acting in Zik's absence handed power to Ironsi instead of the deputy Prime Minister - a northerner, it became very clear to him what the coup was meant to prevent which was the balkanization of Eastern Nigeria.

Today, Ibos are begging for referendum that they removed from our constitution for our right seccesion as a result of Zik's myopia and also for denying Minority people to leave the domineering Ibo majority Eastern region for Ibos.

Any other rubbish they tell you about why Ojukwu declared Biafra and how Zik backed it at first until Ojukwu foolishly lost it, is all hogwash..

Ibos are the greatest problems of Nigeria and so far they have not and will never change.
