🇳🇬 FOUNDATIONAL READING SKILLS BY ETHNICITY AMONG CHILDREN IN NIGERIA (2023)

Children aged 7–14 years

Ethnicity — Percentage with Foundational Reading Skills

1 Igbo — 58%
2 Edo — 57%
3 Yoruba — 51%
4 Ibibio — 40%
5 Ijaw — 33%
6 Tiv — 19%
7 Hausa — 11%
8 Kanuri — 10%
9 Fulani — 6%
10 Other Ethnicities — 22%

Children from Igbo households recorded the highest level of foundational reading skills (58%), followed closely by Edo (57%) and Yoruba (51%). In contrast, Fulani (6%) and Kanuri (10%) children recorded the lowest levels.

NB: In the MICS module, foundational reading skills refer to the expected learning outcomes in basic reading and comprehension for children in Grades 2 and 3. These skills were assessed among children aged 7–14 years.

Why always Igbos?
Even the quality of education in south east is on another level.
I told somebody that it would be difficult for people who attended school in other regions to compete with south east People.

I wonder the basis for these statistics? Africa doesn’t need this at a time like this. Other races have already moved on from tribalism et al. In Canada, for instance, once you are white , you are white, it doesn’t matter whether you’re polish , German or British. All these shenanigans are counter productive. Yesterday, it was someone proposing his ethnic attire for NYSC, tomorrow who knows what else.
