Please guys, I noticed my Hyundai sonata 2009 model going off once I put it on reverse. A week before I noticed it vibrates/jerk in reverse but it became worse now, the engine will go off when I put it in reverse but if I quickly throttle it and put it back to drive, it will move. My mechanic is not available right now... What can I do please.? What Is likely causing it? 1 Like

Most times the ignition coils or spark plugs are culprit, does it go off or do the rpm drops way low when you put on your AC while the vehicle is still on drive? |

No it doesn't go off if its on either drive or AC is on. It only goes off when I put it on reverse. timlinofficial: |

If you have a obd diagnosis tool you can scan for error codes. If you don't try this. remove all your coils get another coil entirely, fix them and put your car on reverse. If it still goes off. Then scanning will be the best option 7 Likes |

fashoo2010:early gearbox warning issue, your converter ( a part in the gearbox is failing) it's a common gearbox problem with Toyota Camry older models, Kia older models and Hyundai, probably you were driving your vehicle inside water, or muddy terrain. very soon your car would stop entering reverse.. look for a mechanic to work on it or change the gearbox entirely 5 Likes |

This is exactly what my dad Toyota Carina 2 was doing. It will move forward with immediate alacrity but the moment I put the reverse gear, the engine will go off. I took it to mechanic and he changed the clutch pressure disc plate (clutch fibre) and that was all. 5 Likes

I had similar issue with my Corolla some years ago. Mine was entering reverse but goes of when I put it on D. It started by car intermittently going off while on motion before it degenerated into driving only on reverse. I ended up replacing the gearbox after a lot of trial and error by different mechanics 1 Like |

fashoo2010:I recommend these checks first: Scan the vehicle for diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner. Inspect the engine and transmission mounts. Clean the throttle body and perform an idle relearn if required. Check the automatic transmission fluid level and condition. Observe the engine RPM: if it drops sharply below about 500 rpm when reverse is selected before stalling, the issue is likely with idle control or excessive transmission load. A few questions: Is your Sonata a 2.4L 4-cylinder or the 3.3L V6? Does it stall only in reverse, or does it also vibrate when you put it in Drive? Is the Check Engine light on?
