ABU Gets Biggest Road Upgrade in Over 40 Years as Uba Sani Transforms Campus

Students and staff of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, are witnessing what many have described as the biggest infrastructure upgrade in the institution in more than four decades, following the ongoing reconstruction of internal roads and other critical facilities by the Kaduna State Government.

The Vice Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, described the intervention as unprecedented during an inspection of the project, revealing that the university had waited over 40 years for such a massive transformation.

According to him, the quality of the ongoing work has exceeded expectations, noting that as Nigeria's foremost engineering institution, ABU has the expertise to independently assess the project. He disclosed that engineers from the university's Faculty of Engineering have actively participated in supervising the construction, while laboratory tests confirmed that the roads meet the required engineering standards and are expected to serve the university community for decades.

Beyond road reconstruction, the project includes modern pedestrian walkways, improved drainage systems, street lighting, disability friendly access routes, landscaping, and other infrastructure designed to make movement across the campus safer and more convenient while creating a better environment for teaching, learning, and research.

The Vice Chancellor also commended Governor Uba Sani for extending the intervention to a federal university without any formal request, describing the gesture as a remarkable commitment to education and responsible governance. He further urged other northern state governments to emulate the initiative by supporting ABU, which he described as a shared educational heritage of Northern Nigeria.

Kaduna State Roads Agency Managing Director, Dr. Abdullahi Baba Ahmed, disclosed that the state government is currently executing about 150 road projects covering approximately 1,345 kilometres across all 23 local government areas of Kaduna State. He added that engineering tests, including coring, in situ density, and California Bearing Ratio tests, have all confirmed the quality of the ongoing work.

The Students' Union Government President, Abdulrahman Aliyu, described the project as one of the most significant infrastructure interventions the university has received in recent years, while students and staff expressed optimism that the improved road network would reduce flooding, ease transportation, and significantly enhance campus life.

The ongoing transformation has also attracted praise from residents of Sabon Gari, who believe the surrounding township road projects will improve connectivity, boost commercial activities, and further strengthen the local economy.

As someone from the south who went to ABU, I would say my experience leaves fond memories asides the usual stress ABU takes her students thru.

It embodies what a 1st generation university should look like. I loved the diversity of students during my era. We had representation from every part of the country and abroad

The life was very cheap and accommodation was good and affordable

I wish more southern university would be built to this standard

I was in Kaduna, just 2 weeks ago, i have been there twice this year already.

The governor is really trying.

Meanwhile during the time of first class quantity surveyor, fighting and killings was order of the day.
