Under FIFA rules, a straight red card automatically triggers a one-game ban, which cannot be appealed by the player's team.

FIFA "crossed a red line" with the controversial decision to suspend US star Folarin Balogun's one game ban for a year, European football's governing body UEFA said on Monday.

FIFA's ruling, which came after the intervention of Donald Trump, permits Balogun to play in the co-hosts last 16 match with Belgium later on Monday.

"Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line," read UEFA's statement.

The European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport also commented, saying he believes “it was the wrong decision.”

“Decisions on sporting rules and sporting matters belong to sporting bodies, not politicians. Influencing sporting decisions would undermine the autonomy of sport,” Glenn Micallef wrote in a post on X.

I agree with UEFA of this!
Re: FIFA 'Crossed A Red Line' Says UEFA After Balogun Red Card Reversal by givedemwotowoto:
FIFA did the right thing.

That injury was an unfortunate accident, but it didn’t deserve a red card. Balogun didn’t see where his foot landed. He was facing the opposite direction.

It’s like jumping up to head the ball, then landing on someone already on the floor. Like, was your body supposed to defy gravity and remain in the air?

UEFA is playing unnecessary politics.

See clown..so UEFA is now Nigeria?

Many other countries didn't qualify.
I guess according to cretins like you, Nigerians shouldn't read news from other parts of the world unless the news paints Nigeria in bad light.

We know your type....crasssssssss

FIFA is doing everything to please the host country, most especially the United States.
This is similar to what CAF did to the Atlas Lions during the last AFCON.

Please after this tenure, Infantino should be impeached. Trump has too much influence over that guy. First, it was the maltreatment of Iran and now preferential favour of the USA team.

That red card wasn't satisfactory, the ref could have given him a yellow card....afterall USA is co hosting the world Cup, nor a big deal

The same werey that says immigrants are not good is the one that wanted immigrants' produce so bad now to the extent he went his way to bribe FIFA. I have known that Americans only think of what they would gain. Very propagandists and selfish people.

Why can't they also condemn the ref decision of not giving messi a red card in the same tackle like the one of balogun?

That FIFA suspended shouldn’t be Nigeria’s problem. Let them send all the players back and start building a genuine National-loving players for the future
No need for big boys acting like they are doing the nation a favour
Re: FIFA 'Crossed A Red Line' Says UEFA After Balogun Red Card Reversal by Atlantis585: 1:37pm On Jul 06
Too much noise about this matter. Balogun did not intentionally step on the man’s leg. The overzealous referee gave him a red card simply because he plays for God’s Own Country. FIFA was right to reverse the suspension. Let’s play the 11 against 11 if Europe is confident in its football supremacy and stop all these noise.

The fact that something is wrong does not justify it to be right!

You quoted wrong decisions to justify another wrong decision.

The sport is being murdered and you are justifying it. These times are the beginnings of doom for the sports as teams will always make references to it to justify demands.

All this rubbish was never part of football and it made the game interesting. The referees decision was final!

Now, you not even sure if you won a cup has it can always be reversed, just like what happened in AFCON
