Should I Increase The Door Height? by Tesclaros(op): 5:28pm On Jul 06
Hello everyone, i just noticed my engineer made a huge mistake of not making the door height to align with the window height. But now I am considering increasing the door height to 8ft and this would also make it stand same height with the window but the issue is that there is a concrete slab above it. What is the safest way to go about this? How do i save cost and Is it safe to avoid structural issues?

If you crack a little to see if the reinforcement has any space above the door level, you can crack further...but if the reinforcement sits on the exact height of the door with no space, just leave it...cus the lintel is chained except you want to crack it,then cut off the reinforcement, increase the height of the door, then filled it up with concrete without reinforcement then dress when the door is installed but I zoomed and saw you dont even need a door in that place....so just fill and dress it back

the reinforcement sits on the exact height of the door. You said you zoomed and noticed i don’t even need a door there. Hmm , why do you say so? Cos I intended putting a steel glass door there. And why would you prefer after cutting the reinforcement, i only dress it back with cement and not reinforcing it again?

I thought the door height is supposed to be higher than the windows if it's the main entrance...
So that when bringing in huge things, it will enter easily

The door is currently 7ft x 4ft. But for aesthetics purpose, i prefer 8ft height.. i was even going to ignore it until i noticed the window is higher than the door and that alone has spoilt my design aesthetic plan so i need to know if it is safe to increase the door height.. and the door is an entrance to the dinning and not the main entrance to the foyer.

Okay,i saw it has been dressed already thsts why i thought you wont be putting a door there. ...for the reinforcement part,if you want to put reinforcement, the reinforcement wont align with the lintel level again,it will be higher than the lintel level, mehn the engineer made a big mistake.. .just reinforce it even if the level wont be same with the lintel, reinforce it anyhow because of the door you intend to put there...use small stones with enough cement for the mix for strength cus that particular part wont be chained to the lintel anymore

Since it's not the main entrance, that current height is good

yes i dressed it already cos the glass door wont need cement work. Anyways, just wanted to know if it is safe to proceed with increasing the height cos the concrete slab behind and in front of the door is a “flat plate slab” up to 20x20 meter wide

what about the subject of the thread. Safe to do it or not?

Install the new lintel at the required height, ensuring it extends beyond the width of the existing door opening to provide adequate bearing on both sides.

Leave the existing lintel in place while cutting out the space needed for the new one. Depending on how the wall has been built, you may only need to remove a section of the wall above the existing lintel. If you're unlucky, however, you may have to break out the entire section of wall above it.

Once the new lintel has been installed and has fully cured, remove the existing lintel. At that point, the new lintel will be carrying the load across the opening.

Finally, make good the surrounding masonry.
