Hosting AFCON or any major sports tournament should not be Nigeria's priority at this time; instead, the focus should be on addressing the security situation in the country, as potential visitors would be scared to visit a country that has been taken over by terrorists and kidnappers.

Nigeria can host the Africa Cup of Nations, but it would require massive financial investment and facility upgrades. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently invited bids for the 2028, 2032, and 2036 tournaments. However, Nigeria must compete with countries like Morocco and South Africa

Current Standing and Challenges:

While Nigeria has successfully co-hosted the tournament previously (1980 and 2000), the country's recent track record for sports infrastructure has been a hurdle.

Recent Bids: Nigeria previously submitted a joint bid with the Benin Republic to host the 2027 AFCON. However, CAF ultimately awarded the 2027 hosting rights to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, while Morocco is scheduled to stage the 2025

Strict Requirements:
CAF requires host nations to present top-tier stadiums, advanced training facilities, accessible international airports, and modern hospitality infrastructure. The bidding process is now strictly vetted by independent experts like PwC to ensure operational viability.

Doable Action Plan

To successfully host a future AFCON (like 2028 or beyond), Nigeria would need to heavily upgrade facilities across the country. Key stadiums that would need significant overhauls or modernization to meet CAF’s 24-team tournament standards include:

1. Godswill Akpabio Stadium (Uyo)MKO
2.Abiola National Stadium (Abuja)Adokiye
3.Amiesimaka Stadium (Port Harcourt)
4.Yakubu Gowon stadium (Port Harcourt)
5.Teslim Balogun Stadium (Lagos)
6. Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium (Enugu):
7. Sani Abacha Stadium (Kano
8. Amadu Bello stadium (Kaduna)

Hosting a football tournament is not just about good stadia security is also a huge consideration and as it stands Nigeria is not safe so they shouldn't even try using AFCON bidding to siphon funds abeg.

surprisingly nobody talked about Nigeria's epileptic power supply. In year 2000 when Nigeria co-hosted AFCON with Ghana, electricity went off during a live game inside national stadium. The whole stadium was in darkness. Match was paused for almost 15 minutes before electricity was restored again. It was a big national disgrace

Say what you will about Akpabio, that man left a mad mad legacy in Akwa Ibom.

His stadium is our redeeming hope for Continental football in Nigeria.

We lack maintenance culture, our stadia are in bad shapes, insecurity, poor infrastructure in many states. grin grin grin grin grin
It's opportunity for the boys to have infrastructure which is great but you said it already, after we host, it will rot. Can you imagine a country that let National Stadium Lagos and MKO Abuja Stadium waste? Of which the Abuja Stadium was built for the COJA 2003 games. Akpabio built a stadium smaller in size but our bad maintenance culture is why we are here today. Nigeria 🇳🇬😑

Let us understand, are you advertising for Boko-haram or Bandit.

Many top players will boycott playing AFCON in Nigeria, make they no kidnapped them.

Imagine Salah, Mane, Oshime, Hakim been kidnapped and Tinubu said he can't negotiate with terrorists for their release.

Wahala!!

Some countries will deliberately lose their qualifying matches so that they will not participate in an event Nigeria wins the bid to host the AFCON.

Re: Can Nigeria Bid To Host The Next AFCON? by oyeb15: 1:13am On Jul 07
The competition will lose value if Nigeria host it . Imagine policemen using loaded AK 47 to control crowd in d stadium.

Batallion of solders will be outside in case of kidnappers or terrorists cos they will gain more international recognition. Camera will just cover a side in the stadium where some crowd will be fighting. Infact Mobile car cells go dey every corner of the stadium....
Re: Can Nigeria Bid To Host The Next AFCON? by franvincoop: 1:26am On Jul 07
Unfortunately your plans against South Africa no go work grin
If Nigeria host, SA must boycott.
If SA dem no boycott, then we go send them to play for Kaduna or Kano, then drop hotel location for Dodo Gide or Kachalla or wtf their names are let them make us proud for once.
