Africa’s Biggest Lithium Processing Plant Is Now In Nigeria

On Thursday 02 July 2026, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commissioned a new lithium processing facility which is the largest in Africa.

The factory was constructed by a Chinese company, Diamond New Energy, in partnership with the Nasarawa State Government.

The $250 million plant has a processing capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes lithium per day (equivalent to about 3 million tonnes per annum), and is located in the Endo industrial hub within Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

It was constructed in cooperation with the Chinese companies Jiuling / Canmax, whose combined production capacity accounts for over 20% of the global lithium market.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the launch, President Tinubu said the commissioning shows Nigeria is ready to move from mere raw mineral extraction to fullscale local processing and value addition.

You're correct but their real issue is that they are afraid to be self-dependent because they feel the South is far more advanced and they need 'one Nigeria' till they can catch up in terms of education, wealth, human devellopment ndex , industry, SME capacity, entrepreneural capacity etc.

@Topic. Impressive. I would even wish the North Discover more oil than the SS has so that, hopefully, their worthless leaders would develop their human resources instead of neglecting them so they become menaces to society through terrorism and banditry.

Will this make cost of batteries n lithium powered products to be cheaper n readily available to the common Nigerians??
We all know better.
Re: Africa’s Biggest Lithium Processing Plant Is Now In Nigeria by Teymanhenry(f): 6:31am On Jul 07
We celebrated the discovery of lithium, believing it would drive industrialization, create jobs, and transform our state into a hub for lithium batteries and other value-added products.

Instead, we're watching the raw mineral being exported while the real wealth, technology, and employment opportunities go elsewhere. We remain suppliers of raw materials and importers of finished goods.

Natural resources don't make nations prosperous—visionary leadership and value addition do. What a country.

I actually think this is good news because Nigeria's mineral resources are not fully utilized since the main focus has been on crude oil. It will help the country if mineral resources like lithium etc are fully utilized and monetized. Dont you think so?

Standing still must be a better option than making progress improvements.

We need more mature citizens with a can do attitude instead of naysayers.

only if you comprehend the key destructive nature of religion in the north, discover all the resources in the world there it still won't make a difference

I think the real question we should be asking is: Who did this to your brain? Please don't use this kind of reasoning to raise children.
If Aliko Dangote had waited for Nigeria to start manufacturing vehicles before deciding to build a refinery, do you honestly think the Dangote Refinery would exist today?
Progress comes from people who identify opportunities and invest in solving problems—not from waiting for every other sector to develop first. Sometimes, one major investment becomes the catalyst that drives growth in many other industries.

Must you wail on every good news?

Yes, we don't produce batteries yet, is it forbidden to start the production?

When crude oil was discovered in Nigeria, did we have the refinery then?

That one of the reasons the north doesn't trust you people in terms of power.
Re: Africa’s Biggest Lithium Processing Plant Is Now In Nigeria by AhmeduandOkopi: 6:42am On Jul 07
The government blah blah blah...
If they realised it's this important why not hurry and build the processing plant for the country, or at least the northern region.

The north is fully in control of the oil in the south many of them including their emirs own a lot of oil wells in the niger delta so this makes restructuring not attractive to them someone like dangote that this current nigeria's structure made the richest black man on earth will definitely do everything within his power to fight against it.

If you think the North is afraid of self-dependant, then the joke is on you, the North had always wanted to secede, they just stayed silent because of the Oil in the south, watch when oil becomes less relevant in the scheme of things, THE NORTH WOULD FIGHT TO SECEDE. They are just waiting.

You are correct oooo but I don't think my us|ess politifcians are actually ready. They only need one nigeria so as to control every region and their resources. Especially the Northwest. Maybe restructuring will help them discover their potentials because my Northern politifcians are not there for development but to loot every single resources that is available
