CBN Clarifies Legal Tender Status of ₦100 Banknotes

The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to reports of the rejection of the standard ₦100 banknote by some members of the public, businesses, and other stakeholders, apparently due to doubts about its continued legal tender status.

For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN hereby reiterates that both the commemorative ₦100 banknote and the standard ₦100 banknote remain legal tender in Nigeria and must be accepted for all transactions nationwide. The commemorative ₦100 banknote, which was introduced to mark Nigeria's centenary, did not replace the existing standard ₦100 banknote.

The CBN strongly cautions individuals, businesses, financial institutions, and other economic agents against rejecting the standard ₦100 banknote. Such rejection constitutes a violation of the provisions of the CBN Act and undermines confidence in the national currency. The Bank will not hesitate to apply appropriate enforcement measures against any person or entity found to be in breach.

The Bank remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the Naira, ensuring confidence in all duly issued banknotes, and promoting smooth currency circulation across the country.

Accordingly, members of the public are urged to accept and transact with all banknotes legally issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

For further clarification, members of the public are also advised to contact the CBN through its official communication channels.

If not that most Nigerians are semi-illiterates, why would anyone need CBN to clarify the legal status of something that wasn't disbanded or decommissioned in the first place.....all that is needed is to ensure that the money is real by checking all the verifiable features and that's all....that was how I gave one woman the note and she was asking me if it will be accepted and I told her why not?...no be CBN release am into circulation.....another one I gave also told me that some local marketers rejected it from her last weekend...I wanted to insult them but I just assumed they are ignorant and trying to play safe just in case because it naturally wouldn't make sense to be printing old versions of Naira notes this year but THIS IS NIGERIA. grin grin grin

I wonder why they're printing the old version though this year when it is supposed to be allowed to phase out/go extinct.

This circular should have come with an image of both notes so people might know. They should also put it across banks entrance and ATM stands for awareness.

Nigerians are part of the reason why the lesser currencies are no longer useful. Now, we increase prices of small goods in 100s not even 50s again. People like transporters do this a lot, that's why the lesser currencies are no longer useful anymore.

Filling stations sell products in multiples of 10s but they will never give you change in small currency, rather, they will round it up even if you're paying with POS. It's crazy.

I know the note. I don't reject it.
I'm just speaking for more awareness so people will know it's still a valid legal tender. When they see the pix, it will register in their mind

Sounds like they want to reintroduce it.
They should be truthful to Nigerians for once. The circular to reject the notes will still be in commercial banks mail. Union bank, FCMB and First Bank have rejected this notes from me. CBN that is rejecting the new 200 naira notes forcing the commercial banks to recirculate mutilated notes is here claiming that this old 100 naira is still legal tender.

It seems there's an injection of those old ₦100 notes into the public, it's been so long that I saw one that I almost didn't recognise it when it was given to me as change few days ago. CBN should have discontinued the centenary notes after 2014 instead of continuing with the design. A lot of gen alphas won't even know such notes ever existed
