1. 90% of lubricants in Nigeria are fake. SON puts the figure at 70%, but judging by what I've seen so far, 90% is being lenient. What this means for you is that your engine and gearbox are likely going to be damaged someday. So buy a car you can afford to replace those parts with ease.

2. You're likely going to drive on bad roads most times. If your regular route is good, in 3 years time it must have gotten bad especially the roads leading to your estate or your street. What this means is that your suspension system will require regular maintenance. Buy a car you can afford to maintain their suspension system because some cars' suspension systems can buy you small car

3. Every uniform person in Nigeria is a hustler. Their primary targets are car owners. That's why, if you visit police stations you hardly find police officers there; they're all mounting roadblock to extort motorists. What this means for you is that you must learn to be generous once you buy a car. It doesn't matter if you're right or wrong.

4. Your rating in the society automatically changes. Your uncles, aunties, nephews, neighbors etc who never spoke to you will become very friendly and will start showing unusual care. They believe that you have now make it. What this means for you is that you'll start spending much more than you ever did.

5. Car brings you to spotlight. People will begin to analyze and judge your actions and inactions. You'll create new friends and enemies. Be careful

I dont know what you mean by fake lubricants, in the 90s when the refinerires were functional, lubricants was refined here, there was nothing like syntehic oil, the vehicles ran on base oil and they lasted.

The lubricants you are importing now from China are actually recycled used industrial oils, they viscocity is very low, nowonder your brand new car's engine starts smoking after 5 years.

Baba I know what he wrote is the daily reality, but I don’t think we should live like this or make it become something we should get used to. Imagine telling me my car will be bad because in 3 years because the road will be bad. How does his brain wrap-up such future deficiencies and collapse without even getting there. It makes me angry. no right thinking people should have such thoughts. Despite the issues, writing it and saying, that, this is what we should expect is a major Low!

Instead of buying lubricants from the shop, I prefer buying it from the gas station like NNPC or Total lubricants (They are 100% genuine)

buy your lubricants from major marketers

NNPC, Mobll, Total , AP, Pinnacle oil - etal, they all have actual plants where they blend engine oil. your risk is when you buy oil from supermarkets or even worse, road side shops

no. what it means is YOU MUST have all your papers correct and drive responsibly. wear seatbelt, etc. in lagos once there is nothing to hold you for, all they can do is waste your time, after which tehy will get upset and tell you to go.

temple hill/globus does. market square does if i recall . Shoprite also used to do same. one time i found something very strange - shoprite was selling engine oil at LOWER than our own cost price . i called our guys attention to it, but they did not act on it . maybe some bulk purchase thing.

basically any large supermarket that sells hardware - [hammers, pliers, etc] will stock stuff like engine oil

Time to get myself another Rav4. I may not leave this particular Toyota series. Unless my wife has another preference, all of us must drive Rav4; year and color may be the only difference.

Depends on the car, most people go into debt buying car.

I bought my car, mercedes 190 with cold hard cash. It does not require unusual maintenance or trips to mechanic.

Engines those days were not complicated. Engines today are sophistication. Engines now don't use "engine oil", they use formulas; like baby formulas instead of just soyabeans.

Any engine that can't last up to 5 years is inferior. There is nothing sophisticated about it..
