I once taught in a prestigious private school. It's surprising that all the best students👩‍🎓 are girls. In one instance, If you decide due to the poor results of all students to add 10 marks, so most can pass to their total score, the best👍💯 girl would be cheated as you can't add anything to her 100 over 100. Because she would get 110/100. I taught SS1 students Maths and Further maths. Her home lesson teacher was her dad who worked in Shell. The girl was too good👍!

The quarter system instead of helping them, destroyed them by creating a sense of entitlement. You can't go to any private sector and see northern presence. You only find such in government. That's why they're so afraid of anything that will break this country, when they speak of unity it's not because they love Nigeria so much but because it's a place where they gather to eat free meal. And I'm talking about northern elites not the entire north
This is one topic people arent talking about enough!
Why are their regular masses not found in private sectors both home and abroad breaking records, doing great things like Igbos and Yorubas and the rest of southern Nigeria regular masses are doing? Look at what Igbos, yorubas and the rest of southern Nigerians created out of content creation industry, movies and music induries, tech industries, etc. I rarely see northerners in tech space! I honestly dont know why southern Nigerian politicians are this f#olish. We should be demanding to quit Nigeria because obviously, the northern region is a complete problem. With the way southerners work, it means we even commit to tax more than Northerners. This means southern regular masses sweat out, pay tax heavily, so both our tax sweat and natural resources are used to fund the life style of northern elites. We have weak politicians. This madness must end in our parent time, my generation will fight against this madness. It must be merit driven society or everyone go your separate way. I cant be working and funding a society whose governors will conduct mass wedding for unproductive people who are jobless but can make babies and leave them off the street to become bandits and terrorize me later.

Kudos to the ladies.

The surnames being Western may be a coincidence.

Many Southerners have Western names for various reasons. Like the Brazilians and Sierra Leoneans/Saros/Creoles of Lagos. Remember people like Femi Pedro, Pinheiro, Ajayi Crowther, Mobolaji Johnson, Adeniyi Jones, Herbert Macaulay, Da Costa, etc. Even Gomez is a popular Lagos family. In fact, many changed their surnames to Yoruba over time, otherwise there would be more Western names.

You may remember the royal branch of the Owa Obokun, the Haastrup, currently the Oba of Ijesha in Osun State. The history from prince to slave to Oba is quite well-known. Haastrup upon return from slavery established a large kola nut farm in a part of Lagos to become known as Igbobi. You have the Orthopaedic Hospital there today.

In Igbo land, due to Catholicism, many people are named after saints, popes, doctors of the church, etc. Like Anacletus/Cletus, Boniface, Gregory, Benedict, Innocent, John, Clement, etc.

In Niger Delta, Europeans wrote down native names the way it would be easy for them to pronounce or relate to. A name like Horsfall. If a local ruler was under another king, they wrote down his name as Duke, being a ruler lesser than a king. With baptism, people got fancy English names too. Soon, local traditional names were being given in English equivalent like Fineface, Strongbone, Godsgift, Government, Company, Manager, Wiseman (like a king's or duke's adviser), Soldier, Happy, Patience, Warrior, etc. Imagine writing Akin, Balogun, Akogun and others in English.

Even Oba Dosunmu in Lagos was written as Docemo in the British-Lagos agreement ceding Lagos to Queen Victoria in mid-19th century. There is Docemo Street in Lagos till today.

Rhodes-Vivour came under focus due to politics in recent years.

Our interactions with Europeans have left lasting marks on us, including family history and names.
What a brilliant insights from you bro 🙏👏, are you a University professor BTW?

I am glad to hear this. I dont know why we shy away from critical issues such as this. I will hustle and have maybe two kids, then someone from core north will marry many wives, born many kids, leave them uneducated, render them unproductive, they end up as bandits to terrorise my kids and my self who denied my self of having many wives and kids. This is madness. They will terrorize me after milking my resources and tax. I dislike southern politicians so much.

Great!
Can we tell who's Gomez or Modestus? Simple answer is No!
But we can admire both as outstanding scholars.

This should be a national standard, otherwise, the nation may never succeed!

When President Mobutu Seseseko of the DRC came into power in the 70s, he ordered all the Congolese who were answering to French surnames to go back to their villages, search for their ancestral names and revert back to them, it worked because many of the people obliged to his request.

Maybe those Nigerians with Western surnames should consider doing the same thing.

OK, and all those that bear Ibrahim, Yusuf, Isah, Mustafa, Dauda, Suleiman, Habiba, Zainab, and Arab names should also go look for the native Hausa, Fulbe, Tiv, Gbagyi names to reclaim? grin cheesy

How well did Mobutu govern Zaire? Was it native French names that made him build a private airport for French Champagne delivery by Concorde landing in his Gbadolite jungle hometown? shocked shocked

He left Zaire/DRC in ruins and war is raging there till date.
Mobutu is a name that epitomises the worst kind of excesses, political rascality and dictatorship in Africa. Hardly a dude to use as a compass.

Everyone... Mobutu might've left the DRC in ruins, but he at least did that one good thing for his people... Being a Muslim doesn't make you an Arab, the same way being a Christian doesn't make you a European.

Aswear down, the south is the biggest loser of the this useless union. It is a shame that the south can unite to fight this mess and save the future of our unborn kids. The north will become even bigger issue in the future. Those guys aren't planning for their kids at all. I dislike the weakness of the southern Nigeria. I dislike the fact that southern Nigeria has failed to fight one common issue which is liberation from this mess. Libration from this mess will save our future kids a lot. We lost in everything here.
