The depth of music you have listened to is amazing.

Wetin concern me with Mighty Sparrow if not for this post?

I know some songs from the oldies- Teddy P, Bill Withers, Grover Washington Jr, Lou Rawls.

But not this deep.

Do you have any knowledge on Pm dawn?

Underrated group and forerunners of emo rap and that drake sound in my view.

The great Mighty Sparrow.

He was the darling of the AIT soca calypso show every Sunday in the late 90s.

Then we did not have a TV then, so we only listened to radio.

My favorite was "Who kill the Sparrow, nobody know - Sparrow DEAD!"

The late Doe Abraham.

Although this isn't mighty Sparrow but another favorite song regularly played on that Soca Calypso show was the naughty song - I push it in, she push it out, I push it back, she starts to shout, Dr ring, I can't stand the sight of your needle.

THIS IS THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL CALYPSO ANTHEM

The Mighty Sparrow mentioned Lord Kitchener as one of the calypso singers that existed before him and Wikipedia said that Lord Kitchener made calypso popular in the UK.

Well, Lord Kitchener has what is probably the most popular calypso song ever in Nigeria. I saw President and Mrs Babangida dance to this song live on national TV, it was played at parties, inter-house sports, on radio & TV and everywhere. Police, military and other bands performed it at ceremonies and on the streets. It was that popular.

I had the vinyl record at home. It had the regular and instrumental versions on one side and songs by Calypso Rose on the other.

It is also one of my favourite songs of all time.

Thank you.

Yes, I remember when PM Dawn became popular. They sampled Bonita Applebum and they were on the Boomerang soundtrack.

I can remember when, I caught up
With a past-time intimate friend, she said
"Bet you're probably gonna say I look lovely
But you probably don't think nothing of me"

She was right, though, I can't lie
She's just one of those corners in my mind
So I just put her right back with the rest
That's the way it goes, I guess
I love the way they played with words. Remember Tribe Called Quest's 1989 hit "Bonita Applebum, you gotta put me on"?

Christina Applegate, you gotta put me on
So I stared at the ring finger on her hand
I wanted her to be a big P.M. Dawn fan
But I had to put her right back with the rest
That's the way it goes, I guess

Didn't know they bit off "A Tribe called Quest" in their biggest hit, "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss of You".

I only know they sampled the Uk band, Spandau Ballet's hit song "True" to make "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss of You".

I wrote that I viewed the Mighty Sparrow as the king of calypso and Arrow was the crown prince. Now we are going to have an Arrow party.
Re: Today Is The Mighty Sparrow's 91st Birthday! by naptu2(op): 5:16pm On Jul 11
The happiest forms of music are calypso and disco music (and then maybe waltz). So we are going to have a disco and calypso sweep.

NTA 2 Channel 5 was crazy about this man in the '80s and '90s. His songs were often part of their station adverts and featured heavily on their pre-resumption test signals.

In my view, The Mighty Sparrow and Lord Kitchener are the gods of calypso music, but this guy is not far behind.

They call me groove master,
Master blaster,
Do you want to groove some more?
You've got to move some more.

I make music,
To elevate your spirit,
Do you want to move some more?
We're going to move some more.
The groove has begun.

I'm going to end this morning's session on a Calypso theme.

Back in the early 1980s I considered these men to be the king and the crown prince of calypso music. The king was, of course, the Mighty Sparrow and the crown prince was Arrow.

Rest in peace Arrow.

This amazing song was later used as the theme song of the 1986 FIFA World Cup. It reminds me of the West Indian Carnival that was held every year in Lagos in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It also reminds me of NTA2 Channel 5.

Arrow - Hot Hot Hot (1982).

This is one of my favourite songs of all time. There was a time that I responded to trolls with the lyrics.

Aha! This has better quality audio.

♪The soca rhythm has plenty feeling.
It has, me waistline moving.
So hold me tighter
Come dance the soca
Come dance the soca

So give me little boom, boom, boom in me soul
Me bones ain't old♫
naptu2:
The soca rhythm has plenty feeling.
It has me waistline moving
My whole body's vibrating
To the soca beat
This Trinidad beat.

As you know, the A side or my record had Sugar Bumbum and Sugar Bumbum (Instrumental), while the B side had these two exceptional songs by Calypso Rose.

This is one of my favourite songs ever. I wish I could tell you how much I love this song.

Jam together, jam one another (I actually called the song "Jam Together" ).

They changed the title because of her. It used to be known as Calypso King, then she won it back to back and they changed it to Calypso Monarch.
