1. Last I checked, Jewishness literally is a bloodline. What does it matter whether they lived in Europe or not. So long as they belong to the Jewish bloodline, they are Jews. They are literally referred to in Quran as Bani Israel -- sons of Israel aka the bloodline of Israel -- by the famed prophet of Islam.

1. I believe you are conflating two different things here. I am not sure why!

Traditional Judaism follows matrilineal descent (born to a Jewish mother). Liberal branches (Reform/Reconstructionist) also recognize patrilineal descent if the child is raised Jewish. Anyone can also join the faith via formal, recognized conversion

Jewishness is the bloodline while judaism is the religion one is able to convert to. However, conversion does not make one a part of the bloodline.
