FCT: 70 percent of projects I completed were awarded 16 years ago – Wike by Great100000(op): 8:38am On Jul 10
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has revealed that about 70 per cent of the projects completed by the FCT Administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were abandoned contracts awarded 15 to 16 years ago.

Wike said the projects were revived and completed in line with Tinubu’s directive that no viable government project should be abandoned.

Speaking during his monthly media chat on Thursday in Abuja, the minister said the administration deliberately focused on inherited projects before embarking on new ones.

According to him, allowing the projects to remain abandoned would have denied residents the benefits of critical infrastructure and wasted public resources.

“The President said we can’t abandon old projects. While we cannot abandon old projects, we must also carry out new ones.

“I can tell you that about 60 per cent of the projects we have executed in the last three years were projects awarded 15 to 16 years ago but abandoned.

“If we had allowed that, people would still be asking questions about those abandoned projects. So, we first made sure they were completed, and we have achieved that with not less than 70 per cent of them,” Wike said.

The minister stressed that while inherited projects were being completed, the FCT Administration also initiated new road and infrastructure projects across Abuja and the satellite towns.

He attributed the pace of development in the nation’s capital to President Tinubu’s support, particularly the decision to remove the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which, according to him, made funds readily available for infrastructure development.

Wike maintained that the administration would continue executing projects aimed at improving transportation, opening up new districts and enhancing the quality of life for residents of the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike is doing well, but El Rufai was the most innovative FCT Minister we ever did have. Too bad they didn't let him stay at least 4 more years.

I'm not here to defend evil.

In 2010, oil revenues were very very high. That's when the projects were awarded.

In 2014, oil revenues started falling. Oil prices had fallen from 130 dollars per barrel to around 75 dollars per barrel in 2015, and that meant they kept falling.

Once oil prices fall, so do government revenues, and so also do revenues for projects

(To go back to the past, in the 1970's during the oil boom, projects for the original lagos metro and a new prision were awarded. Work commenced, then oil crashed in 1982, and until 2006, those projects were yet to be done or completed. (Lagos metro is ongoing, the prision isn't finished).

Add the fact that we were paying an increasingly expensive subsidy for fuel, which rose with increases in consumers of fuel...and thus government is running out of money

Subsidy removal in 2023 did bring in more money for fct budget, but it ain't enough...

The long and short is, when your government revenue comes mostly from oil, that is problematic.

There is extra money now thanks to subsidy removal and also to high oil income. EVEN THEN..it is not enough

Wike probably knows he needs far more than what he has to accomplish what needs to be done...but our budget is still below 50 -60 billion dollars. Abuja as a whole probably needs somehwere around 20 billion dollars to look like a modern city.

And a very shameless disgraceful shade at that cus just about that 16 years ago, the same Jonathan and his wife Patience were working hard to impose him as Governor of Rivers State.

He was literally carrying Patience' handbag all over Abuja that 16 years ago.

Mr Project, well done sir. Even Goatluck Jonathan abandoned Obasanjo and Yar’Adua’s projects despite being in the same party. But you and your boss Tinubu ignored party and instead looked at tge masses who will benefit from the projects. Prosperity will judge you both right

In which party was Wike, Daniel Bwala, Akpabio, etc, 16 years ago? Is it not the same people who awarded the contracts 16 years ago that are still in the corridors of power?

The only thing that has changed is the name of the party currently in power.

Report: Current Govt Added More Debt in Two Years Than Nigeria Accumulated in 55 Years

• Decries Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio

•Urges FG to declare fiscal emergency

A new policy brief has warned that Nigeria’s worsening debt profile and weak revenue generation have pushed the country into a dangerous fiscal position, with the current administration accumulating more debt in two years than Nigeria recorded during its first 55 years after independence.

The report, released by the Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics LTD/GTE, a Nigerian policy think tank, argued that the country’s debt crisis has evolved into a governance and revenue emergency, as debt servicing obligations now exceed the federal government’s retained earnings.
>
>
According to the think tank, Nigeria’s public debt rose sharply from N87.38 trillion in June 2023 to N159.28 trillion by the end of 2025, with President Bola Tinubu’s administration accounting for about N65.9 trillion of the increase within its first two years in office.

The organisation in the brief titled: “Nigeria Is Borrowing to Breathe—and the Clock Is Ticking”, noted that Nigeria accumulated only about N12.06 trillion in debt from independence in 1960 up to 2015, meaning the current administration added more than five times that amount in just 24 months.

The report stated that while previous governments also contributed significantly to the country’s rising debt burden, the speed of accumulation under the current administration had intensified concerns over fiscal sustainability.

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has added a further N65.9 trillion in just two years. To put that in perspective: it took Nigeria’s first 55 years of independence to accumulate N12 trillion in debt. The current administration has added more than five times that amount in 24 months,” it argued.

It recalled that Nigeria briefly became almost debt-free externally after the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo secured an $18 billion Paris Club debt relief package in 2005 and paid $12 billion to extinguish about $30 billion in external obligations.
