Ratio of public to private schools in Lagos State is one to 22 ― Commissioner

The Lagos State government has said the ratio of public to private schools at both primary and secondary school levels in the state is one to 22.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, gave the revelation in her remark at the 2022 edition of the Total School Support Seminar Exhibition (TOSSE) held at Oregun in Ikeja between Thursday and Friday.

The Awolowo rebirth in the Southwest has inspired gongs, songs and rhetoric of sorts. But they have missed one point.

It occurred to me in Abeokuta last week amidst the big crowds and euphoria of the swearing-in of Senator Ibikunle Amosun as governor. In all the states from Lagos to Edo, where Awo has witnessed ideological resurgence, hardly a single family member has played a role.

So we have an Awo family without an Awo. That is an irony. But history overwhelms us with this sort of twist. Obafemi Awolowo toiled for his reputation. His roots were lowly, he toiled to school both home and abroad, launched into careers in law, business, journalism and eventually politics. He carved a niche for himself, and became the first methodical and charismatic leftist in our history.  Other leftists abounded but they did not inspire comparable drama and following.

He faced tribulations, went to jail, failed in elections, won a few, but he imprinted his ideas and legacy in the country, and no single mortal has beaten him in the history of this country. His greatest achievement was in the area of ideas, and that was how he fashioned a family. Most families are born of biology but his issued from ideology. That family suffered with him.

In a spoof of Jesus Christ, these were the men who followed him in his teachings, and endured with him in his temptations. So he formed a kingdom for them in the Southwest, in the old Western Region, presiding over his projects, his legacies and people.

In all of these, the family he had was not his flesh and blood. In another spoof of Christ, who were his family anyway? Those who were with him must be counted as his family. So, I combed in the ambience of Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), and I found none. I went to Ogun, I frisked the crowd under Amosun’s bower, hardly any. Around Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in Osun, I could not lay a finger. With Governor Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti, where are the forbears of Awo? Yet, I can hear the chants of Awo. Hardly in any of the inaugural speeches or any of their other public intervention would you miss the philtre and filter of Awo from these gentlemen. To parody Novelist Joseph Conrad, they are the sparks from Awo’s sacred fire, the messengers of the might within the man.

Already all of them are pursuing the legacy ideas of Awo: free education, free health services, infrastructural development, urban renewal and economic engineering.

Lagos has posted itself as the John the Baptist. The others are putting up valiant efforts, and the world of course is watching to see how well they will perform. It will call for great work, resourcefulness and cooperation. They are the real Awoists, and Awo was a man of rigour and vigour.

The Awo son that many expected to take after the father was Olusegun, who unfortunately died in a car crash. We shall never know if he could have pulled it off.  But the others have not shown much of the paterfamilias’ brio and depth. In the past decade, under this republic, they have blended with the wrong crowd. Even H.I.D, hobnobbed with Alao-Akala, who brought illiteracy to governance; with Oyinlola who turned the grace of office into a hell-hole of despots; with Daniel who could not arrest his quick fall into megalomania.

I wrote once that this woman whom Awo once described as the jewel of inestimable value has lost value to his cause. If he came back to life, he would have committed the extraordinary act of divorce after death. Even his newspaper, The Tribune, has so stumbled and fallen that it swims in Awo’s vomit.

Africa must stop wasting her time on dreams of socialism because it is a system of wealth distribution primarily. Whereas, capitalism is a system of wealth creation primarily, and wealth has to be produced before it can be distributed.

Since Tinubu was governor, Lagos State Government pays the WAEC (WASSCE) registration fees for eligible SS3 students in public secondary schools. Each year, the state sets aside funds to cover the examination fees for students who qualify under its sponsorship scheme.
All state government can do this. This is part of what the first lady was talking about when she said those musicians and content creators should have charity foundations like Akon. Not just doing silly giveaways. You see folks like Obi say he's giving 50million to a school, yet students dey the school that can't afford school fees for the year. Do more sensible giving.

Is it not a silly giveaway to pay for WAEC rather than employ enough teachers to make education free for children, like it was under progressive UPN governor jakande 46 years ago?

The same silly giveaway of akara instead of jobs to earn a living indignity on the basis of 70k minimum wage.

As a lagosian, who pays waec fees for some public schools' students annually in my LGA of Alimosho, I say you're not sincere with your post. The so called free waec fee benefit isn't free afterall. I tried to explain this yesterday to many of you who dont even know what's going on here. The tax you paid can buy waec forms for up to 10 students, if you're committed to it, so how is the form now free for your wards?. Every bonafide lagosian should pay tax, I don't have any issue with that, even though it's being embezzled. In most west african nations, waec fees are waived. Its totally free to ease financial burden. You can consult Google fast .

Before your ward can qualify in Lagos, you must present your proof of paying taxes. My question is, how many of these public schools students' parents can afford to pay taxes? Public school students are the largest in lagos by population. They're like locusts each time they're dismissed from school every day. The reason is simple. The majority of those students are not from an average home where parents can afford 1 square meal a day. As a matter of fact, a lot of them take gari with water to school to drink as lunch. These parents put them there because they too want their wards to be educated yet, they don't have enough to achieve this. Some wards don't go to school at times because they don't have money for okada while some endure to trek over a very long distance to get to the nearest public schools where they're enrolled. Anyone who comes to lagos frequently will attest to this as you see them trekking in groups and flooding the streets.

Many women have no husbands, they sell coconut, pepper, even fry corn which is seasonal to survive. Where will they now see a TCC to present? These are the people we give some relief to, by paying off their wards waec fees. We still couldn't cover much. With the new policy, we'd have to reach out to donors to help these poor kids. Our money that we contribute annually for this can't be enough. These are the stuff we do in our LGA, which we don't tell the public and a lot has benefited immensely since 2011 when we started. You see children saying he or she couldn't write waec cos no money and you begin to question the so called free waec enrolment of the LASG in public schools.

If you want to make something free, let it be across board, just the way baba jakande had done without asking for any TCC. We have the money and our budget can carry it. It's just being stolen. When we come out to tell you why tinubu lost Alimosho and major LGAs in lagos, you should know why. Dividends don't go to the grassroots. Those shouting tinubu today are those joining him in stealing our common wealth,. Their children are also here on NL attacking everyone. When they said ibo caused Tinubu's defeat, I kept laughing. In my polling unit alone, ibos who came out to vote aren't up to 20 cos we know ourselves. They mostly stay indoors during elections.We're over 700 in my polling uhit alone . We copied this philanthropic cause from Aeroland. He's our leader. We the youths back then said he should contest for the fed house of reps but he said he's not interested. We sent awori elders to beg him before he accepted. He won massively but tinubu threatened him. He first gave him a blank check that he should write any amount and uncle said he should go and tell those who voted him and not himself. He now sent another delegate to him, threatening his life and family and aeroland had to willing succumb and they declared alimosho votes inconclusive that year. Tinubu said he needed the constituency. These are a few of his sins in Lagos and why he can never win here. I've been keeping quiet each time they say a particular tribe didn't allow him win. We allowed sanwoolu do his 2nd term cos we preferred him over GRV, not that apc deserved it.
