Ya-Na Abukari II, the traditional king of Dagbon in northern Ghana, has died in South Africa after a short illness, according to media reports.

He became king after a long-running succession dispute that led to deadly violence in 2002 and later promoted reconciliation and reforms.

Traditional rulers remain highly influential in Ghana, helping settle disputes, preserve culture, and support local development. The Dagbon King’s death must now set in motion the choosing of a new king in the coming months.

Meanwhile, this comes against the backdrop of strained relations between Pretoria and Accra following anti-undocumented migration violence in parts of South Africa.

Ghana has publicly condemned attacks on foreign nationals and called for accountability following the killing of a Ghanaian citizen in Cape Town. South African authorities have maintained that the killing was linked to alleged extortion-related criminality and not xenophobia.

A sad occurrence, especially at this auspicious time of strained relationship between SA and Black Africa.

This is another challenge for African countries to shore up their own health facilities rather than depend on other countries.

Sometimes I wonder what we're still looking for in a country where many people seem to have so much hostility toward foreigners. I believe the international community should hold South Africa accountable for repeated xenophobic violence. If other countries continue to face this treatment, they should consider taking reciprocal diplomatic measures. Respect should go both ways.

What wahala? What was a traditional ruler all the way from Ghana doing in South Africa? If he went there for medical treatment and died as a result of his illness, then it is unfortunate and an indictment against Ghana. If he had instead been living there in South Africa, also, something against Ghana. undecided

How do you then have an independent foreign policy when you're over-reliant on the West - even live there? No wonder there's a tendency to white worship.
