How did the ref mess up?

If you end up kicking a player instead of the ball because the player is stater than you, that's your headache. Ref's will always judge it a foul if you kick an opponent instead of the ball.

Digne was slow and reckless there and bought the foul sold to him by Yamal ; the ref has no fault in that at all.
