At night, Long Ridge Road in Lagos is supposed to glow. Inward and outward, the streetlights are meant to guide commuters, secure businesses, and keep pedestrians safe. Lately though, the poles are going dark — not because of power failure, but because scavengers are carting them away piece by piece. Residents and drivers along Long Bridge inward and outward say the theft has become bold and frequent. Metal poles, arm brackets, bolts, and even solar panels are being dismantled under cover of night and sold as scrap. What’s left behind are bare stumps and gaping holes where light used to be.
