The Airbus A320 aircraft of Air Peace on Tuesday suffered significant damage at the Lagos airport, following a crash into the airplane by the equipment of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc. A statement today by the management of the airline, said that the NAHCO’s baggage conveyor belt vehicle crashed into the aircraft’s engine shortly after the completion of Flight P47427 from Kano and the safe disembarkation of passengers.

According to the statement, the handling equipment tore into the aircraft and, as such, rendering the aircraft totally unserviceable. The airline regretted that the incident had significantly impacted its operations, as the aircraft was rostered to operate multiple flights within the airline’s network over the coming days.

The airline further lamented that consequently, several scheduled services would experience delays, while some may be cancelled as it works to mitigate the disruption through fleet adjustments.

The statement added: “We sincerely apologise to our esteemed passengers whose travel plans may be affected by this unforeseen ground handling incident.

“Our operational and customer service teams are actively working to minimise the inconvenience by providing available alternatives and ensuring that affected passengers receive the necessary assistance.”

The airline reiterated that the safety of its passengers, crew and equipment remained the highest priority, adding that it was working closely with the relevant ground handling company and aviation authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and prevent a recurrence.

Re: Airport Truck Crashes Into Parked Air Peace Plane In Lagos by Willy2025: 1:16pm On Jul 15
There was carelessness on the part of the airport workers and management. When you go to our airports, all sorts of authorised and unauthorised persons access the tarmac and other restricted areas without any control. At times, even passengers are allowed to walk from the terminal to the parked aircraft or disembark and trek their way across. All these are very wrong and pose both security and accident risks like we are seeing now.

Re: Airport Truck Crashes Into Parked Air Peace Plane In Lagos by MilestoneMillet: 1:21pm On Jul 15
While it is highly commendable that the Federal Government (FG) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) are actively upgrading and repairing our airport terminals, there are two critical areas that still require urgent attention to truly modernize our aviation infrastructure.

1. Clearing the "Aircraft Graveyards"
The presence of abandoned, disused airplanes littered around tarmac areas is a major eyesore. Beyond aesthetics, removing these scrap aircraft is a safety and operational necessity. Clearing them will free up vital airside space, allowing active aircraft to manoeuvre and park safely.

2. Implementing Underground Fuel Hydrant Systems
Relying on mobile fuel tankers (bowsers) to refuel aircraft is an outdated, high-risk practice. To mitigate the risk of ground accidents and improve turnaround efficiency, our major airports should transition to underground fuel piping systems integrated directly into the terminal aprons.

Addressing these two issues will not only elevate the visual appeal of our gateways but also bring our airport operations in line with global safety standards.

No more trucks on runways
