Nigerian caregiver reportedly dies after working 3 days straight abroad without sleep

A 40-year-old Nigerian caregiver has reportedly died after allegedly working for three consecutive days without sleep while trying to raise enough money to complete a house he was building in Nigeria.

The incident, which surfaced in a viral video shared on social media, has triggered emotional reactions online, with many expressing concern over the pressure some migrant workers face while trying to support their families and finance projects back home.

Colleague reportedly recounts final conversation

According to the narrator in the viral video, a Nigerian colleague who reportedly spoke to police said the deceased had been taking multiple shifts at different care homes without sleeping for three days.

The narrator quoted the colleague as saying:

“Before the shift change, the guy told him that he has been working different shifts, different locations for three days without sleeping.”

He added that the colleague questioned the caregiver about his decision to keep working despite his condition.

“He asked him, ‘Why are you working like this? What is the problem?'”

According to the narration, the caregiver explained that he was trying to earn enough money to complete the house he was building in Nigeria before August.

“He said he has a house that he is building back home that he wants to complete next month, being August. That is the reason why he’s jumping from one shift to another for three days without sleeping.”

Caregiver reportedly refused to leave work

The narrator claimed the caregiver later told his colleague that he was no longer feeling well before the shift ended.

“Before the end of shift change, the guy said that he’s not feeling fine.”

His colleague allegedly advised him to go home and rest.

“He told him, ‘If you’re not okay, go home. You have not slept for three days.'”

However, the caregiver reportedly declined, saying he needed to finish the shift to receive payment.

“He said if he goes home, there’s no way for him to complete the shift and they won’t pay him because of the shift.”

He reportedly collapsed while feeding a client
According to the viral account, the caregiver continued working despite feeling unwell.

“In the process of trying to feed a client, he gave the client one spoon, second, third spoon. He just slumped and died because he had been working for three days without sleeping.”

Expressing sadness over the incident, the narrator questioned the sacrifices many people make in pursuit of financial goals.

“This guy wanted to complete the house back home by next month. Who is going to complete the house now?”

You want to complete a house then you didnt bother about your health. I wonder the rush nothing pass health because that thing you are planning for it's good health and safety first. A house is useless if you're too sick to enjoy it so build your home without destroying yourself.

I have been sleeping and playing games for one week without working here in Nigeria. No crazy pre-authorized bills come off my accounts at month-ends. In the past, I used to have high blood pressure every month ends when I saw money leaving my account. Not even a monthly rent or mortgage. There is a difference between living and existing. I was "existing" abroad, but now living in Nigeria.

He will complete the building in his next life if there is any.

What a foolish way to do,house that wise people takes their time to build no rushing,how is he sure his siblings are actually using the money to build him a house and no videos of someone else house.

The body is wired to repair itself with it.

This seems to occur every month on average.You guys should take it easy,we are fine over here at home despite the challenges.Our people in the diaspora are often morbidly obese which is a risk factor to their overall health.l often watch health and fitness competitions like running and one can find people from different countries taking part in the popular events but rarely can one find a Nigerian.Guys, please calm down,go out for a jog or long walk sometimes.Most of you can't run or walk properly.Overworking oneself is never an indication of a healthy living.

You think it is easy to live normal lives abroad when bills come calling. There were month ends I was paying the mortgage and rents for about $6000, excluding other utilities and insurance. How you wan take sleep?

I once drove into a restaurant at 11 pm, it was -30 degrees Celsius and all the whites were enjoying, I looked back towards the entrance, and saw about ten delivery drivers, Skip the dishes, waiting to pick up late night orders, lo and behold, they were all black like myself and, on a second or third job of the day. Some of them will be having building projects in Nigeria. I shook my head and continued with my meal.

During my student days, I worked with Nigerian colleagues who did 12 hours night shift in a mental health hospital, who came to start shift with me at 8.00am at a children residential home, after finishing from the hospital at 7.30am. Our shift finished at 5.00pm, I went home to go chill, while they prepared for the next 7.30pm night shift.🙄
