CONCERNED NIGERIANS REJECT RENAMING OF COASTAL HIGHWAY, HEAD TO COURT TO CHALLENGE FG




Concerned Nigerians have rejected the Federal Government’s decision to rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway,” vowing to challenge the move in a competent court of law.

The rejection comes hours after the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, announced the renaming during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

According to Umahi, the decision was taken “in recognition of the President’s long-standing vision for the project” dating back 27 years to when Tinubu was Governor of Lagos State. He said the renaming was approved by the Ministry’s leadership “by the powers conferred on me.”

WHY NIGERIANS ARE SAYING NO:

1. No Public Consultation
Citizens argue that a 750km federal highway built with taxpayers’ money cannot be renamed without National Assembly approval and public input. “This road belongs to 230 million Nigerians, not to one ministry,” a coalition statement read.

2. Project Not Yet Completed
The first phase from Victoria Island to Lekki is 47.47km and still under construction. Critics say naming infrastructure after a sitting president is premature and politicizes national assets before they deliver value to the people.

3. Wrong Precedent for Governance
The group warned that renaming projects after incumbents erases history and deepens division. “Let the President be judged by the legacy he leaves after office. Today’s priority should be transparency, cost, and completion — not naming ceremonies.”

4. Questions of Process
The Minister cited “powers conferred on me” and “consultation with directors.” Nigerians are asking: Where is the law that gives one ministry the power to name a national highway without the legislature and the people?


A coalition of civil society groups, lawyers, and concerned citizens said they have briefed lawyers and will file a lawsuit immediately to:
1. Set aside the renaming until due process is followed
2. Declare that federal projects require legislative and public approval before naming
3. Protect public infrastructure from partisan branding


“We acknowledge the 400km extension to the Fourth Legacy Highway, the dualisation of East-West Road, and other approvals announced by Mr. President. Nigerians want those roads completed fast.

But renaming the Coastal Highway now is a distraction. Complete the 750km road. Open it to the people. Let history, not press briefings, decide what it should be called.”
