Dancebreaker:
We live in society where people are loud, indiscrete, like to show off, abuse any opportunity, and many are still very superstitious.

Imagine, through diligence and perseverance, you discover a hustle formular that works. You then give the update to one dim-witted fella. He might even give it to people more dim-wited than him. Then they cast it in no time.

Nobody wants that.

Even if you are not the self-fish type, you need to protect your source of garri.
no lies baba, some people will spoil years of hardwork another individual taught them, because they want to be famous or want to look like they are smart.

From a business standpoint, I started a production business and employed people. I have not even made the capital back not to talk of profit and some of my staff had already taken my trade secrets to be producing exactly what they are producing in my factory in their house, sidelining my business that employed them. From that angle, tell me why I will not Gatekeep.

I intend going into manufacturing, the machine prices are crazy 🤪 😳 😐.

When you found out, did you sack them and modified the products?

Man this is deep. I agree with whatever decision you take. I once worked in a factory too, and I know from the body language of some of our workers if they had the engines we use to make those products that company will go down. Everybody wants to be rich in 2 weeks, wrong mentality!
I want to go into manufacturing, getting the machines will be headache for competitors 🤷‍♂️.

It is largely influenced by poverty. Nigeria is a country with a lot of poor people, so whenever any update land, everyone wants to benefit and possibly exploit it. After a short while, the update will cast because there are too many people trying to eat and the cake can't go round.

There was an update where you could use Access bank card to buy dollars from a platform and sell at a higher rate on another platform. The cards had about 200$ monthly limit and were blue in color. There was also the black card.
I kid you not, there were boys in Abuja going round the Access bank branches, claiming they misplaced their cards, so they can get a new one. In reality, they were exhausting the monthly dollar limit in minutes. Some of these boys were collecting up to 3 different cards daily from different branches using the same excuse. When Access bank discovered the ruse, they reduced the monthly limit to 10 dollars. Naso that update cast. Then sef Access bank Mastercard became scarce and you'll see guys texting you asking if you have Access Mastercard and if you do, you'll get a commission.

Once you share an update, most people will want to exploit it. And that's why Nigerians are banned from using some online services or platforms.

Visa update oh
Online job update oh
Online survey update oh

Nigerians will exploit and abuse them all.
你在说什么呢?
Na Chinese people dey Gatekeep pass
, it has nothing to do with poor or rich people.

Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by Kaczynski: 10:48am On Jul 18
People gatekeep because they’re afraid of losing their edge. If I teach you how to build a billion dollar app, what’s stopping you from outcompeting me? So people rather play the victim and say na God dey help me and keep the secret sauce to themselves.

Sometimes it’s just survival. If you’ve been burned before, shared your hustle only to see someone else take the credit you’re gonna think twice before handing out free potatoes next time.

The reason that thing they're gatekeeping is still existing is because of the gatekeeping, Nigerians love abusing things, share it openly and it'll not live long enough to keep benefiting from it, they'll ruin it easily because that's what they do, besides I've been burnt several times by people i deliberately shared precious things with and the payback was lovely.

Because the first thing a black man usually do is to plan evil for the person that show him way.
Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by Sheuns(m): 11:03am On Jul 18
Nigerians will abuse any venture they get into.

Dispatch business (logistics) abused
Export business (cargo and express) abused
China imports and purchase (procurement) abused. Every tom dick and harry now imports and procure from China.

They abuse to the extent that they drop the value in this businesses.

Something that ideally should be done at 5 Naira, some will say they’ll do it for 3 Naira. They’ll end up giving you a bad service or product. Nigerians on the other hand prefer cheap things to things of quality that are more expensive. I blame them not, the purchasing power of Nigerians is very low.

Sometimes the people we look up to are not really what we think ther are
2. Some people abuse what people give them without considering what it cost the provider.
Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by Abee79(m): 11:10am On Jul 18
1. To maintain exclusivity and social status.
2. Fear of dilution or loss of authenticity.
3. To protect community safety or insider knowledge.
4. Resentment toward newcomers who haven't "earned" their place.
5. Desire to preserve subcultural identity against mainstream co-option.
6. To prevent entitlement mentality.
7. Many people just want to maintain a low profile

Well, you're correct too, many people feel like that, especially if they've had bad experience with trying to "help people" - someone made a thread on nairaland which day here that the person he brought to their office is now using style to want to "take his job"
Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by Love800(m): 11:32am On Jul 18
Wow.

Thanks so much.
GloriousGbola:
several examples abound

i worked in corporate and cars were regularly auctioned for staff to bid for.

these cars had net book value of 0 by deprecation, but were mostly in fair conditon

staff could buy cars [then] at prices from 400 to 600k

then some people started bringing their car dealer freinds into it. as it was competitive b iddig, and teh dealers could sell outsie for 2 or 3 m, the whole thing was scattered

the same happened with shoprite then - they were selling five alive at the lowest price anywhere because they had bulk purchase agreement. so what happened nigerians started going to shoprite to buy in bulk to resell. so shoprite started limiting the max number of five alive you can buy at a time

even now, i see some businesses that sell at regular discount and i say nothing in public because what will happen is hustlers will spoil it for everyone

you also have the bast disation where some people are in a business and making proit and then other get the basic concept and flood the market. in the 1990s pure/satchet water started out as an elite feature in owambe parties. it was costly, but it was also well packaged and safe. somewhere along the line, everyone got in on it and today you can get pure water that was taken straight from a well . the cost is rock bottom, but so is the standard

those are my own experiences and perspectives on the matter

They no day their comrade go scatter everything. C watin 1 guy do for Twitter. E go expose how some legit people for Nigeria done dey use travel out for Nigeria go abroad give yahoo boys.
Stephen0mozzy:
First of all, gatekeep nor mean gateman 😅.

In street terms, it means "to dey hide update or discourage people from trying to do wetin you dey benefit from".

You may have heard someone say it, or even said it yourself, that if to say na "black man" invent many of the free things we have access to today, na only them and their family go dey use am.

We've seen this with friends, colleagues, neighbours and even siblings sef... One person will get a certain opportunity and will start making some really good profits, but they will deny that that there's money in it, or some will mask their strategy by saying "na God dey help me o".

We scarcely share things for general benefits. Some will even ask you to pay for something that they got for free sef. Why is that?

1. Is it because we had a bad experience in the past when we maybe shared something and they didn't appreciate?

2. Is it because we wan "better pass our neighbor"?

3. Is it because we want people to always depend on us, instead of just teaching them how to fish.

Share your opinion and experience. Also, share your positive experience in sharing "updates" and the reward/gratitude you got from the person you helped.

- Let's have a weekend conversation 😁

You have spoken well !

I trade the Forex market. I have discovered that many Nigerians hate forex compared to other businesses because they aren't able to abuse it. In the Forex market, there's no such thing as UPDATE. Its you and your discipline. If you do anyhow, youll see anyhow.
Nigerians like to exploit any new opportunity until it becomes over saturated. That was how pure water businesses became saturated,
recharge card printing,
cat fish farming,
China importation,
Dispatch Riding,
POS.
Now I see people on their WhatsApp posing as export cargo agents.

And before you know it, they'll be screaming on social media " Discover how I earn $200 daily doing this business... click the link to join my telegram group
There's an update I'll have today, I will keep it to myself, until I'm very satisfied
