God of War Laufey Gets a Release Date, and Kratos Isn't Going Anywhere

Sony's panel at San Diego Comic Con this year turned into one of the more memorable PlayStation moments of the whole event. Fans walked in expecting a look at God of War Laufey, and they got that, but the panel also opened and closed with news nobody had fully confirmed before. Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog told the room directly that Laufey will not be the final God of War game to star Kratos. Then, near the end of the session, Sony locked in an actual release date for Laufey: February 16, 2027.

I've followed this series since the original PS2 trilogy, and I'll admit I sat through that panel with a little bit of nervous energy. Laufey looked strong in earlier previews, but a lot of longtime players, myself included, wondered what role Kratos would play going forward once a new lead character took center stage. That question got answered pretty clearly this time.

Kratos Confirmed to Return in a Future God of War Title

The biggest surprise of the panel wasn't really Laufey's gameplay footage. It was Barlog stating plainly that another Kratos led entry is already in some stage of development. He didn't give a title, a setting, or a timeline beyond confirming the project exists. For a franchise that has spent over a decade built around Kratos as its central figure, that confirmation mattered a lot to the fan base.

Some viewers reacted with pure relief. Others said they weren't shocked at all. If you've followed the rumor mill around the God of War remakes over the past couple of years, you probably remember the theory that kept circulating: Laufey comes first, a new Kratos game follows after that, and then Sony eventually revisits the original Greek trilogy through remakes. Barlog's comments this weekend line up almost perfectly with that theory.

Sony didn't attach a firm date to the next Kratos project. The way Barlog phrased it during the panel suggested the two games are being built on overlapping schedules rather than one starting only after the other wraps up.
