Houthis claim missile attack on Saudi city after kingdom strikes Yemen targets

Iran-backed group says Jizan attack was retaliation as renewed exchanges raise fears of a return to full-scale fighting

Yemen’s Houthi rebels said Saturday they had fired a missile at the southern Saudi city of Jizan, retaliating for Saudi strikes on Houthi military sites a day earlier.

The Saudi-led coalition said Friday’s operation targeted positions threatening commercial shipping after the Iran-backed group declared a naval blockade of the kingdom and attacked Saudi vessels in the Red Sea.

The renewed exchanges have raised fears that Yemen’s long-dormant conflict could resume. Houthi and Yemeni government forces have reportedly reinforced positions along front lines stretching from the Red Sea coast to the Saudi border.

Saudi Arabia had largely avoided direct confrontation with the Houthis since a 2022 truce halted years of fighting. Recent attacks on a Saudi airport, tankers and other infrastructure, however, have increased pressure on Riyadh to respond.

UN and regional mediation efforts are continuing, though diplomats and analysts have expressed growing pessimism that the escalation can be contained.

Iran has indeed planned for a war with the US for a very long time.

They realise the Strait of Hormuz is a declining asset. All the Gulf countries are now creating pipelines that will completely bypass Hormuz and take their oil directly into the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. Meaning the Strait will no longer be of much value in the next 2 to 3 years.

They invested in the Houthis and Hezbollah for many, many years, not just out of the kindness of their hearts but because they envisioned a day like this would come. With the Houthis, Iran can close the Red Sea through the Bab al Mandab Strait in Yemen, and with Hezbollah, they can effectively make it unsafe for ships to pass through the Mediterranean from coastal villages in Lebanon.

Iran's objective is to become a hegemon in the Middle East, and with the Houthis and Hezbollah, who are non-state actors that can do Iran's bidding at a moment's notice, they have created a "Sphere of influence" that essentially gives them control over 20-30% of global energy traffic. This will effectively make Iran the fourth centre of power after the US, China and Russia.

Whether Iran will succeed or not, I do not know, but I do know that the US war on Iran has the potential to be the most significant Geopolitical event in our lifetime, and it is unfolding right before our eyes. Interesting times ahead.
