Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described his decision to pick Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as running mate in the 1999 presidential election as the biggest mistake of his life.

Obasanjo made the statement on Friday in Lagos during a fireside chat with maverick musician and activist Charly Boy. The event was held to unveil Charly Boy’s foundation and his memoir, “999: A Memoir in Tribute to Late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa”.

According to Obasanjo, with hindsight he would not have chosen Atiku as vice president.

“I would say the greatest mistake I made was picking Atiku Abubakar as my vice president in 1999,” he said.

The former president added that he was thankful God did not allow Atiku’s actions and overreactions to derail his administration or distract him from governing the country.

They have a penchant for kneeling down to beg and then moving against you as soon as they get what they want. Like Obasanjo and Atiku, like Tinubu and Elrufai. Circa 2003, all the governors were in support of Atiku and were ready to support him as president. It was said that Obasanjo had to beg Atiku to allow him to go for a second term which Atiku obliged. The rest is history. Atiku is not a small politician. He stepped down for MKO Abiola in 1991. He has paid his dues and he should cease all form of respect for Obasanjo and also roll in the mud with him.

You might be too young to understand the problem between OBJ and Atiku Abubakar. Atiku wanted to take over by all means in 2003. He had the political structure behind him to take over and deny Obasanjo a second term in office. Obasanjo practically knelt down and begged Atiku for a second term in office. It's that kneeling down that OBJ don't want to forgive.
