Catholic Bishops Speak Truth To Power – Shehu Sani by Bobloco(op): 10:54am On Aug 02
Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has said that Catholic Bishops have a long-standing tradition of speaking truth to power and have never been partisan.

His comments come amid a debate following remarks by Cardinal and former Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan, on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Friday, Onaiyekan said the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) told President Tinubu during a recent meeting at the State House that the country’s economic situation was taking a heavy toll on poor Nigerians.

He also alleged that the president was not receiving accurate briefings on the realities confronting the country.

The cardinal said the President is bent on winning the 2027 general election “by all means”, warning that the government’s access to state resources could threaten the credibility of the electoral process.

However, in an X post defending his principal, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Communication, faulted Onaiyekan’s remarks as being politically motivated.

Bwala said the former Abuja Archbishop was speaking only for Catholics and not for all Christians, adding that the cardinal was “more political than spiritual.”

He also defended Tinubu’s response to the bishops’ assessment of the economy, saying the president’s position was based on facts and statistics.

But in a post on his X handle on Saturday, Shehu Sani, also a public commentator, said the Catholic Bishops had consistently spoken truth to successive governments since the era of military rule.

“From the era of Military rule and throughout the period of civilian Governments, the Catholic Bishops have a consistent history of telling truth to power.”

He said the bishops had never been partisan in their dealings with political leaders, stating that they had always presented every president they visited with bitter kola instead of olive oil.

“They have never been partisan. Every President they visited, they bring him a gift of Bitter Kola instead of Olive Oil,” Sani wrote.

Sani lost his relevance long ago. His cashivism is a notable feature of his downfall.

These bishops ought to be told that the altar is meant to elevate truth, justice and moral conscience—not to become an extension of any political campaign.
When a bishop descends from moral leadership into partisan contestation, he risks diminishing not only the credibility of his message but also the neutrality and spiritual authority of the office he holds.

This one is all over the place. Torn between maintaining his false reputation as an activist or maintaining his real double-faced personality and support Tinubu.

What Tinubu cannot corrupt does not exist!

Any human being that refuses Tinubu's financial and political inducement is a rare human that must be preserved and protected by all.

Shehu abi Nsi ewu Sani have long lost his reputation, his words no longer carry weight because he is now in the same hall of shameless and integrity-less Nigerians like Reno Omockery, Daniel Bwala, Funny Femi Kayode and co, so he should shove his words back into his filthy kaftan pocket filled with agbado shocked

Did you even read what he said before complaining??

If Nigeria had more northerners like Shehu Sani, we'd have a far better chance of succeeding as a nation than we do now.

State the exact comment made by the bishops that suggests their statement was an extension of a political campaign.

Criticizing government policies or calling for accountability is not the same as campaigning for or against any politician. If you believe otherwise, quote the specific statement and explain how it amounts to political campaigning.

Going by facts available that the drug baron likes to use fake bishops. You did not see what they said to him to be truth, justice and morally right.
If they had collected bribe and came out and sang on your mandate we shall stand
It would have been the truth ,justice and moral consciousness to u

You would then open a topic how bishops celebrates the drug baron achievement. And by extention that majority of Christians in nigeria will vote him.And making his Muslim Muslim ticket the right decision even as the country is a secular nation
Truely is not about writing long English that makes one intelligent

Another classic exercise in shadow boxing.

Nobody argued that bishops should praise the President or suppress criticism. The issue is much simpler:

Did Cardinal Onaiyekan fairly represent the meeting? Did he clearly separate his personal interpretation from the collective position of the bishops?

Instead of answering those questions, you invent a fictional scenario about bishops collecting bribes and then proceed to argue against your own imagination.

If the bishops had emerged and praised every government policy uncritically, I would have asked exactly the same question: Were they speaking objectively or acting as political cheerleaders?

The standard is consistency, not convenience.

And your final point is ironic.

No, long English does not make anyone intelligent.

But neither do insults, conspiracy theories and imaginary scenarios make an argument intelligent.

Address the issue on the table, not the one you invented.
