US To Impose $20,000 Visa Bond On Nigeria, Other African Nations by malali(op): 4:29am On Aug 03
The United States has finalized a plan that will compel Nigerians and other African business and tourist visa applicants to deposit up to $20,000 to guarantee they will depart America at the expiration of their stay, citing rising visa overstays and poor information sharing by several countries on the continent.

The United States has introduced a Visa Bond Programme requiring certain Nigerian and other African B-1/B-2 business and tourist visa applicants to deposit between $10,000 and $20,000 as a guarantee that they will leave the US before their authorized stay expires.
The policy follows concerns over rising visa overstays, weak information sharing, identity verification challenges, and document security issues among some countries.
The bond amount will be determined by US consular officers during the visa interview, based on factors such as the applicant’s purpose of travel, employment, income, and ties to their home country.
The available bond amounts will be:
$10,000
$15,000
$20,000
The bond is refundable without interest if the traveler departs on time and complies with all visa conditions. It will be forfeited if the visa holder overstays or violates the terms of admission.
The US Department of State said the programme is intended as a compliance tool rather than a punishment, encouraging foreign governments to improve immigration data sharing and document security.
During the 2025 pilot phase, visa issuance for affected countries dropped by 83%, with nearly half of applicants choosing not to proceed because of the bond requirement.
The State Department reported that the pilot countries recorded 45,488 B-1/B-2 overstays in 2024, while during the first 10 months of the pilot period, overstays among bonded travelers dropped significantly.
The programme affects applicants from several African countries, including Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, Benin, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and others listed by the US government.
The US Mission in Nigeria also warned applicants:
Visa applicants must submit recent passport photographs taken within six months and must not use AI-edited, filtered, or digitally altered images. Photos must accurately represent the applicant’s real appearance for identity verification.
The Department of Homeland Security data showed that non-Visa Waiver countries had a significantly higher B-1/B-2 overstay rate compared with Visa Waiver countries.
The United States says the goal of the programme is to reduce illegal overstays, improve screening, and encourage stronger cooperation from countries with higher visa violation rates.

Re: US To Impose $20,000 Visa Bond On Nigeria, Other African Nations by malali(op):
$20000 on bond......LMAO are you visiting God ?

Convert $20,000 into Naira = ₦27,309,400

₦27.3 million worth of FGN bonds

22.60% × ₦27,309,400 = ₦6,173,924 per year

An investor putting $20,000 into that FGN bond would receive approximately:
🟢 ₦1.54 million every quarter equivalent
or
🟢 ₦3.09 million every 6 months (actual coupon payment)

with the ₦27.3 million principal returned at maturity.

I would rather invest that in Nigeria. It seems Nigerians have been technically banned from going to the United States forever. Where is a common man visiting his or her relatives going to get that kind amount of money? Some people visit the US for medical treatment, education and research purposes. Why is Trump administration like this? Utter wickedness.

A welcome development. Anyone who has an issue with this is likely a criminal.

Why will you go to another country and overstay. Some of them have no intention of coming back and before you know, they'll constitute a nuisance as illegal immigrants. Resorting to crime in order to survive.

If you have a genuine reason for going to the USA, then depositing that amount shouldn't be a problem.

Because of Nigeria's porous borders, look at the level of insecurity. These terrorists walk freely between borders.

I expect European countries to emulate this too.

$20,000 is too small.

let them increase it to $2 million USD so when you see a politician and his whole family travelling for GRADUATION for you to be clicking LIKE, you can be sure how much is involved.

Giant of Africa with full advantage of the full ocean YET we are still like this. We have the river Niger and we are still poor. We have one of the largest LITHIUM deposits in the world yet we are like this. 200 million people inside water yet soap dey enter our eyes.

Re: US To Impose $20,000 Visa Bond On Nigeria, Other African Nations by epainos:
Interesting. And more interesting to read Naijas' reaction.

This $20k bond seems to be a good tool the way I am seeing it, and based on what I am reading so far. Hmmmm. Interesting.

Looks like it will discourage or encourage the following groups:

1. Those who know how to invest well in Naija. I saw one guy up there analysed the value he is getting if he puts that in the Nigerian bond. By the way, Naija's Tbills, bond, and other FG financial instruments, event the naija stock are one of the best performing in the world. Even our banking system is one of the best. We just need to be able to remove corruption, and we will be the best nation in the world. And Naija will get there. Its why I am still around too....when I realised this...I tanga here to set up very well before knowing what next to do. Lol.

2. Those who want to japa anyhow and hustle in the US, but don't have the money are discouraged too. These people are the ones that used student visas and never went to school. Lol. These ones got tourist visas, and never returned. So, it is definitely discouraging many of them. Lol. They are the same group that are cursing the UK daily. They want to always find loopholes to feast on. Lol.

3. Those who have reasons to go there because they want something there. Can be good education, access to innovative opportunities, good networking, etc. I think people in this group will rather wait and see what's up. Someone said Trump will find a way to not release the money even after they follow all the rules, and will find a way to say they are disqualified for the refund. I doubt it, but its wise to look before you leap. At least, with $20k you have a good chance of getting it. So, you start weighing the options. What I stand to benefit, is it worth more than the interest in Nigerian investments? Hmmmm! Is it worth even more than losing the whole $20k? Sure some people will fall into the group of just losing the cash because the gem they have found or will find may worth billions of naira.

So, it really depends on you. What exactly are you planning to go do in the US? Just the same way sophisticated Nigerians prefer to stay in Switzerland, which is one of the most expensive places to live on earth. And they are doing excellently well.

It's not just Nigerians, it is people from a wide variety of countries , including even European countries, who enter the US, overstay their visas, and constitute nuisance in their country.

Not the Americans are getting fed up, and trump was voted in on a mandate to do something about it.
