OPINION: The Igbo Spirit of Accommodation Deserves Recognition The photograph above captures members of the Yoruba community celebrating their Amala Cultural Day in Owerri last year. It is a simple but powerful reminder of something that is often ignored in today's divisive conversations. Despite persistent narratives suggesting that Igbos are hostile to non-indigenes or deliberately push others out of their communities, realities like this tell a different story. Facts will always speak louder than propaganda. Across the South East, people from different ethnic backgrounds live, work, worship, and celebrate their cultures freely. The Yoruba community organizing and celebrating an event dedicated to one of their most cherished cultural cuisines in the heart of Owerri is evidence of the openness and hospitality that have long characterized Igbo society. The Igbo people have traditionally embraced enterprise over ethnic division. We believe in hard work, peaceful coexistence, and creating opportunities for anyone willing to contribute positively to society. Rather than wasting energy on discrimination or needless profiling, we focus on building businesses, supporting families, and growing our communities. This is not to claim that every society is perfect, but fairness demands that we acknowledge the many examples of peaceful coexistence that exist instead of promoting stereotypes. Respect should always be mutual. When people are welcomed, allowed to thrive, and free to celebrate their culture, those gestures deserve recognition. Ndị Igbo are an accommodating people. We believe in coexistence, commerce, and community. That is the spirit that has defined us for generations. Igbo Kwenu!

The OP knows what he said is not true. There is no section of the country that is more hostile to outsiders than the Igbo. For crying out loud, it wasn't too long ago that Pastor W.F Kumuyi wanted to hold a crusade he wanted to hold in Aba in 2022. IPOB made such a ruckus, threatened his life, that Kumuyi had to cancel the crusade. My sister's fiance, an Edo man who has been based in the US for over 40 years, made plans to relocate home and settle for good. He planned out a number of investments which his lawyer here in Nigeria was handling. He planned to build a 100 room hotel in Owerri and a land was sought for that purpose. The land the lawyer saw, belonged to an Igbo chief. The chief stated his price of 90 million naira and the lawyer informed my sister's fiance and he flew to Nigeria and travelled to Owerri to see the landlord and location. He was happy with what he saw. However, when he wanted to pay, the chief drew the lawyer aside and in Igbo, told him that he thought it was an Igbo man that the land buyer was. So for the reason that the buyer was an outsider, the land would have to go for 190 million naira instead. All pleas by the lawyer, fell on deaf ears. Still, my sister's fiance put that aside and agreed to pay the 190m only for the chief to start becoming aggressive and telling them to leave that he wasn't selling the land anymore. They were shocked and tried engaging with him to change his mind. This only seemed to provoke the chief further and before long, he mobilised men to come and chase the lawyer and his client away. As they sped off, they forgot a small bag of money (about 6m or so) that the client had brought out and placed on the roof of the car when he was looking for his cheque book. The bag fell as they drove off. When the lawyer, being Igbo himself, returned to inquire about the bag, no one agreed to have seen the bag. There are several other examples I can give but what's the need. We know tribes that are accommodating to others. The people in the south east aren't among them. |

Dogalmighty17:You and your God knows that you have never lived in Igbo land before just like many of you who are judging in ignorance. I built a house in Aja- Lagos and I know what your brothers omonile did to me. It was like they were sent by the devil to make sure that at every level to discourage the building project even with all the relevant government approvals. But thank God I never allowed them to discourage me. I don't know how many they have frustrated in the past and the government can't do anything about it. If what happened to me was done to a Yoruba man in the East, you will open a thread for it and be disturbing people up and down. I also know how many markets your agbero has burned down just because of little disagreement in your region but do we complain? We have decided not to allow anything to deter us in Nigeria, why don't you accept it too when you are in our region and stop pretending as if we are finding it funny in your region. |

MEGAWATCH:Your singular experience does not count. Everyone knows what Omonile do. In the South East, your version of them are even more ruthless. I am from the middle belt of Nigeria. Born and brought up in Plateau state and vastly travelled. I can tell you for a fact that every other section of this country have embraced the Igbo with open arms. Something the Igbo have failed to do for others. In Plateau, Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa and indeed all states in the middle belt, Abuja inclusive, Igbo not only are in charge of the economic life of those states, they settle and have areas exclusive to them. They buy up lands in premium areas of all these states I mentioned above. No one stops them. For crying out loud, Nigeria is an import dependent economy. If the Yoruba wanted, they'd have been the ones selling and trading in everything that comes through the ports but that's not the case. Even in Lagos, who controls the import dependent markets? It certainly isn't the Yoruba or Hausa. Which markets in Igboland do Yoruba or Hausa control again? |

Dogalmighty17:You have never lived in Igbo land, you and your God knows that any day you lived in Igbo land you will be very very ashamed of yourself on what you have written here. My singlar experience doesn't count... Okay! It was in this country that Pastor Tunde Bakere told the whole world that he was invited in a meeting where they were discussing on how they were going to destroy the house of Igbos in Lagos and be asked them, " That house you want to destroy, who sold the land to them?" My problem with most of you from the west who are always championing this hate is that, you can't tolerate the insult you gave to others in your place. Imagine telling me that my experience doesn't count, with all the lies you told in your story about your in-law leaving behind a whole 6millon Naira? 🤣🤣🤣 Please stop this madness, do you know how many markets own by Igbos that has been destroyed in your region? Are omonile not your people? Can't you control them for crying out loud? Do you know what it takes to start a business in foreign land? Please stop making noises and compete, nobody will give you anything freely you fight for it like a man. We have decided to fight, and nobody will give you ANY QUOTA SYSTEM IF THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE CRYING FOR. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 |

MEGAWATCH:Go back to school and learn basic reading comprehension or is it that you actually can't read at all? I wrote clearly up there that I'm from the middle belt of Nigeria and grew up in Plateau state. Is it that you are so untravelled and have very limited geographic exposure that you don't know where Plateau state is? We don't have Omonile in these parts sir. I'm sorry they must have traumatized you to the point that you see Omonile in everything and behind everyone. Hope you don't go around calling everyone around you Omonile too? |

Dogalmighty17:Which state is the middle belt in Nigeria? And which tribe is called the middle belt? They are Hausa's, Yoruba, Fulani, Gbegi, Lantan, Tiv's and even Igbo's in the middle belt of Nigeria. This is the hypocrisy we are always talking about. Hiding under a general umbrella and attacking from there. Keep lying and deceiving yourself and your Co-travellers, looking for who to paint black as you are angels from heaven. Your uncle forgot 6million bag of money in a hurry. Tufiaa! 🤪🤪🤪🤪 |

MEGAWATCH:I have lived in Ibo land across several states and I can tell you that the average Ibo is a tribalist and xenophobe. If a non Ibo starts a novel business in the SE, the Ibos will not patronise that business. Rather , they will study it and then open a similar business and from there get their Ibo people to patronise it. If a non Ibo has a business side by side with another Ibo person and they are into the same business let's say a bar , no Ibo person will patronise the non Ibo person. The ones that do will be scolded by others on why they should be patronising the business of a foreigner above that of their fellow ibo. You will find out that businesses operated by non Ibos attract only non Ibos . The issue of not selling land to non Ibos is well documented. If you are a non Ibo working on contract sites like in my case, you will get unusual hostilities from the locals for no just reason because you are not Ibo. There was a time the community youth stormed my site not demanding for jobs because to them labour work is beneath them(most labourers I had were northerners) but to get money from me. This isn't omonile oh. Just give us money because you are not Ibo . They didn't take anything from the job site but wanted me as the contractor to settle them because I am not Ibo. This is despite the fact that the owner of the property is from the same community. I called the man but he told me it's between me and them, that I should settle the youth. I did. Finished the initial work stage and told him to get a new contractor that I was done. |

| Re: The Igbo Spirit Of Accommodation Deserves Recognition by TopBanter: 8:37pm On Aug 05 |
FSBoperator:I believe your revelation 100%. Some facts and reality on ground are proof of the real status quo. They declare themselves "accomomodating" yet their region is the most avoided in Nigeria that Nigerians stay away from and prioritise least as a permanent migration destination. People should understand that claims they make need to make factual and logical sense. Do human beings, in search of better lives, stay away from geographical spaces full of accommodating people who provide them opportunities to thrive? Big No. Why do African immigrants prioritise getting to the UK rather than France, Russia, Spain etal? Your region is the most avoided in our nation and has literally a mono-culture plus religious and ethnic intolerance. Yet you claim "spirit of accommodation". These guys just amuse me with their talk devoid of logical sense. |
| Re: The Igbo Spirit Of Accommodation Deserves Recognition by FSBoperator: 8:47pm On Aug 05 |
TopBanter:The only group of people you will see in the SE are Hausas and Fulanis. Fulanis , due to their cattle grazing and Hausas who form the bulk of labourers and artisan workers. Hausas also are the preferred for security guards for obvious reasons that they are trustworthy given the option of hiring from among themselves. The SE is the most hostile and most xenophobic region in Nigeria They don't tolerate 1% of what they demand and abuse in other regions. There was a news article here some years back on how a community in Nnewi, Anambra forced non indigenes to register and pay for an ID card and went on to place a head tax on all non indigenes in the name of security levies. Anyone that they see as a stranger they will demand to see their community issued ID card and check to see if they are up to date with their monthly head tax Forget SE abeg. And don't let me even talk about their vigilante outfits and the NPF down there because those ones are no different than terrorists and kidnappers |
| Re: The Igbo Spirit Of Accommodation Deserves Recognition by TopBanter: 8:47pm On Aug 05 |
Saturnalia:Migration is a simple test of how accommodating a people are. African immigrants in France would try and stowaway on trucks going to the UK and escape France to land in England. Imagine the French then turning around to say they are more "accommodating"than the Brits when the UK is where every African immigrant desperately want to escape France to reach. There is no region more avoided in Nigeria by non-indigenes than intolerant and mono-culture SE. These guys are just fond of lies and propaganda. It is same reason they present the failure Obi a messiah. |
| Re: The Igbo Spirit Of Accommodation Deserves Recognition by TopBanter: 8:53pm On Aug 05 |
FSBoperator:Indeed. Some things are a simple case of 2 + 2 =4. You cannot claim to be accommodating yet most avoided region Nigerians boycott with very poor ethnic diversity stock. |

Dogalmighty17:The truth of the matter is that one side person like you, shouldn't be allowed to dent the image of a whole tribe. I have spent most of my life in Yorubaland, and can tell you for free, that life for an Igboman in Yorubaland, isn't a bed full of roses. I have been denied accommodation here in Yorubaland, because of my tribe, I have be denied job opportunity here in Yorubaland, because of my tribe, We have paid double for a property here because of my tribe. Will I come and say all Yorubas are bad? There are many Yorubas in Igboland today, doing well for themselves without molestation from anyone. Go to Google, and search for ola of Ana, he will tell you better. He's a Yorubaman in Igboland. Stop your useless generalization. |

Dogalmighty17:I wanted to take you on bet of reasonable money. Then when I saw another of your post saying u are from middle bet I just changed my mind that you don’t have money. Thr is nothing like middle belt. You are from NC and be proud to mention your state if you are not lying thr too..You see people like us who have lived with your people in kaduna no better. How old are u.Do you think u are lying to your village people here.I am from imo/owerri. You sister finance wanted to buy land in owerri for 90 million and got to the place it was shifted to 190 million and he was ready to still pay for edo man ...haba malam. Then the seller refused again even when he has doubled the money and chased him away. While running he left 6 million cash behind. In what denominations. What did he come to the site with such cash for. In your lie to make it sound big.You said he wanted to build 100 room capacity of hotel...what a joke Do you know the size of land that will take such capacity in owerri and you are talking of chicken change of 190 million. Whr in owerri will you see such land for 190m joke you mentioned Lands in owerri of just 2 plots in estate in owerri is btw 150 to 250 million .This regular estate. In more standard estate it goes up to 500 Million. Then u still have some going to 700million and above in some estate like achikeudenwa estate. Tell us the area in owerri that you sister boyfriend went for property that can take 100 rooms and you are taking of 90 million or even the lie of 190 million double Even out side owerri capital how much is plot of land like nneze, aba Road, obinza. This areas are out skit of owerri. How much is plot of land.Abi it was one village in imo state he wanted to build 100 room hotel for who to patronise it. Bro u can lie for Africa and data boys who think owerri is one village in SW are liking ur post. Next time don't forget to tell us the hotel this edo man met your sis.ter as you claimed her fiance. OP that Amala day was well discussed on NL at the time, I believe there was also a similar event in Abuja. It was organised by an Igbo man who had lived in SW and conceptualised it as a money making event because he loved Amala. The yoruba don't have any traditional recognised annual Amala day, beyond Oyo all, Ibadan Ogbomosho axis Amala is not considered a particular meal associated to the culture. It's usually called Abula |
| Re: The Igbo Spirit Of Accommodation Deserves Recognition by TopBanter: 2:47pm On Aug 06 |
ariesbull:You have no "spirit of accommodation". What you possess is a penchant for lying to yourselves and others specifically by denying fact, reality and logic. It is how you all try to re-invent the failure Obi as a messiah all Nigerians must adopt. People vote with their feet in terms of migrating to land where others are genuinely accommodating, non-discriminatory and will provide them opportunities to attain everything that allows a man be as comfortable and fulfilled as possible such as freedom to practice his religion, gain employment everywhere and anywhere, buy land freely and build homes and/or business premises etc. All this is missing in the SE. It is why the region is the most avoided in Nigeria by all Nigerians whereas the SW has a large number of virtually all ethnic group domiciled across the region. One observation I have concluded about you guy guys is that you believe in patronising the intelligence of others with lies and propaganda that ignores fact, reality and simple logic even. If a region is the most avoided by Nigerians, religiously intolerant and biased towards Catholicism, even internally discriminatory to the point Ebonyi man cannot work in Anambra civil service etc, etc then what is this "spirit of accommodation", talk disrespectful of facts and reality, based upon? Are you mentioned below? The only way you guys can improve is to begin telling yourselves the truth and learning from others .

ariesbull:How can a people with their own internal discriminatory caste system be accommodating to outsiders? In your very own village you discriminate amongst yourselves over this same generational caste system that denies those on the bottom rung not to hold any public or cultural position and barr intermarriages between castes. You still have the open discrimination against Abakaleke people whom you all consider as inferior or not original Ibos. Even between your villages , communal clash is rife. How then can you be accommodating to outsiders ? |
