Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by solbase10(op): 8:56am On Aug 07
Copper Queens of Zambia head coach Nora Häuptle has criticised the Confederation of African Football (CAF) tie-break regulations following Zambia’s elimination from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Zambia bowed out of the tournament despite securing a 2-1 victory over Malawi on Wednesday night.

The Copper Queens finished level on points with Super Falcons of Nigeria and Malawi, with qualification determined by CAF’s tie-break rules based on goals scored in matches involving the three tied teams.

Under the regulations, Nigeria and Malawi progressed after scoring four and three goals respectively in the head-to-head matches, while Zambia scored two.

Speaking after the match, Häuptle expressed disappointment, saying it was frustrating for Zambia to be eliminated despite scoring the most goals in the tournament and conceding the fewest

She said the team had given its all throughout the competition and described the tie-break rules as being inconsistent with the spirit of the game.

“We scored the most goals in this group, and we conceded the least goals,” she was quoted by Lusaka Times. “Sometimes I’m not sure if we do the right things with this kind of regulations because it feels completely weird that we are out.”

Meanwhile, Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda said the team will learn from the disappointment and return stronger.

Striker Racheal Kundananji also expressed pride in the team’s performance, saying the players fought hard despite their early exit from the tournament.

I feel bad for the Copper Queens, they had the highest goal difference in that group and still crashed out despite being level on points with the other teams. Why did they even decide to scrap goal difference as the tie breaker in a group stage?

Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by TruthDefender(m): 9:47am On Aug 07
The rules were there BEFORE the competition started.

Nothing to moan about. You wouldn't be moaning if the rules made you qualify to the quarters

Most goals how? They scored 5 against Egypt, non against the falcons and 2 against Malawi. So how on God's name did they score the most goals.

Do you even understand anything? All the goals scored against Egypt was axed, because Egypt was the bottom ranked team. The only goals counted was goals scored against their other two opponents(Nigeria and Malawi). Likewise Malawi and Nigeria.

This was the same thing that happened in the world cup qualifiers where our men qualified for playoffs over Burkina Faso

They scored 8 goals in the group Nigeria scored 9 goals , Malawi scored 7

Majority of these goals were scored against the weakest team in the group which was Egypt

According to CAF rules, since Egypt was eliminated and Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia, ended with 6 points each, head to head goals between Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia were counted canceling the goals they scored against Egypt,

Malawi scored 4 goals, 3 against Nigeria 1 against Zambia

Nigeria scored 3 goals, 2 against Malawi 1 against Zambia

Zambia scored 2 against Malawi 0 against Nigeria
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by sandra2025(f): 9:50am On Aug 07
On this table log, Nigeria should be the first instead of Malawi because we have +3 goals difference and Malawi has +2.
I guess they arranged the position between Malawi and Nigeria alphabetically.
Back to Zambian coach, she's just stating what she doesn't understand.
Zambia only won one match irrespective of the high goals they scored.
Malawi and Nigeria won two matches.

I fully agree with her...the rules were quite harsh on them

To be sincere, I am with the Zambian coach on this.

All over the world, goal differences are first used to break ties before considering other criteria. Why African things dey dey different?
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by Pootle: 9:52am On Aug 07
when it favors nigerians everyone keep shut, remember when zambia won the nations cup and should have represented africa in the confederations cup but no, some how CAF ensured another nations cup was played and nigeria won it. the excuse for 2012 and 2013 was lame, the 2013 should not have happened

Hey Sandra You are WRONG!
Zambia won 2 matches. Crushed Egypt 6-0, lost 0-1 to falcons and beat Malawi 2-1.

You can’t be doing this in this modern era with almost every info on the internet 😩🤦‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by Hemanwel(m):
Besides, in breaking the so-called ties in group C, if CAF rule says the game against Egypt will not be considered for the three teams, it therefore means that both Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia, finished with 3 points each, and not 6 points . If we are not looking at the goals scored against Egypt, then we are also not looking at the points gotten from Egypt game.

This is in similitude to what happened in the Super Eagles' last WC qualifying games that took us to the playoffs.

Exactly. I wonder why the Zambian coach is crying now when she knew the rules all along. Pathetic.

It's really crazy what sort of useless metrics did CAF use

Na Penaldo fans thought all these complaining coaches this thing.
When Argentina were proceeding in the worldcup Ronaldo fans kept on complaining of foul play
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by Nobody:
CAF Rule is very fair

Zambia scored 6 goals against Egypt but only managed to score 2 goals against Nigeria and Malawi. When Zambia ties with Nigeria and Malawi, then results against Egypt should be taken off cause Nigeria and Malawi shouldn't suffer for Egypt’s woeful performance
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by ARISHEM: 10:06am On Aug 07
If the thing happen to Nigeria super falcons CAF will not rest o. We will call them out.
How can you score the most goals, conceded the least number of goals in the group, have the highest goal difference in the group, tied at 6 points. And still not qualify.
Even Malawi Didn't Know They Qualified!
They thought they were eliminated!

After the final whistle blew at 2-1, the Malawians began walked around the pitch doing a tearful lap of honor to thank their traveling fans for supporting their debut campaign.

It wasn't until the technical bench frantically ran onto the field to explain the head-to-head calculations that the team realized they had just booked a historic spot in the WAFCON quarterfinals!

No team expected things to turn out the way it did. Everyone went to read the written rules after it happened.

If not for the head to head, Nigeria and Zambia would have been the ones to the next round
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by stagger: 10:10am On Aug 07
Everyone knew the rules before the tournament started.

In the ties involving the three teams, we had the following:

Super Falcons: 2 against Malawi, 1 against Zambia: total of 3 goals
Malawi: 3 against Nigeria, 1 against Zambia: total of 4 goals
Zambia: 0 against Nigeria, 2 against Malawi: total of 2 goals

The goal Nigeria scored late against Malawi proved to be a huge decider. Also, Zambia would have needed to score 2 more goals against Malawi, because if they had tied Nigeria on number of goals scored in their ties, they lost to Nigeria on the head-to-head rule.

This is a case of everyone having their destinies in their hands.

Zambia scored 6 against Egypt and not 5.
The Mini-Table Games That Counted:

Malawi 3-2 Nigeria

Nigeria 1-0 Zambia

Zambia 2-1 Malawi.

So, what was the tie-breaker? Goals scored only in matches between the tied teams:

Malawi scored 4 goals (3 vs NGA, 1 vs ZAM) and finished 1st Place

Nigeria scored 3 goals (2 vs MWI, 1 vs ZAM) and finished 2nd Place
Zambia scored only 2 goals against the two.

Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by Hemanwel(m): 10:32am On Aug 07
What does CAF intend to achieve or gain by adopting a tie-breaking rule different from FIFA's? How does picking H2H before goal difference help African football in the long run? How?
Re: Zambia Head Coach Slams CAF Rules After WAFCON Exit by NaijaGoBetter2(m): 10:38am On Aug 07
Thought Zambia and Nigeria should qualify so what rules put Malawi ahead of the two?

The standard is there before head to head, goal difference comes first before any other rule

Were the rules made after the group games or it was like that before the competition started?

Na dis kind logic una dey take support Peter Obi and oppose president Tinubu. Emotional logic of bigotry and tribalism.

It's a fair decision.

You can score 10 - 0 against Sao Tome and Principe or another tiny football nation.

Then lose to quality, strong teams.

You don't deserve to progress if there's a tie on points.
