VaginaAcademic:
If you grew up in a Nigerian home in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, chances are you heard one warning over and over again:

"Don't use white Maggi!"

Some families claimed it caused hypertension. Others said it could lead to stroke, blindness, or mysterious illnesses. In many homes, it was completely banned.

But here's the interesting part: most of those same families were unknowingly consuming the very thing they were trying to avoid.

So how did AJI-NO-MOTO®, popularly known as "white Maggi," become one of the most misunderstood food seasonings in history?

The Origin of the Fear

The controversy dates back to 1968 when a doctor in the United States wrote a letter describing numbness and dizziness after eating at a Chinese restaurant. He speculated that Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) might have been responsible.

The media quickly picked up the story and coined the term "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome."

As the story spread across the world, MSG developed a bad reputation despite years of scientific research that failed to establish it as the cause of those symptoms in the general population. Unfortunately, the fear had already taken root and eventually reached Africa, including Nigeria.

Why Nigerians Called It "White Maggi"

Unlike the familiar brown seasoning cubes, AJI-NO-MOTO comes in the form of white, crystal-like granules that resemble sugar or salt.

To many people, it simply looked like a laboratory chemical rather than a food ingredient.

That appearance alone fueled countless rumours. People claimed it caused high blood pressure, kidney problems, stroke, blindness, and even sudden death. None of these claims were backed by solid scientific evidence, but they spread rapidly through word of mouth.

The "Lazy Cook" Label

Another reason many households rejected it had nothing to do with health.

AJI-NO-MOTO is pure MSG, a flavour enhancer that boosts the savoury taste (known as umami) in food. Even a simple soup can taste richer with just a small amount.

Because of this, many experienced mothers and grandmothers believed using it was a shortcut. In some homes, it became associated with people who couldn't cook properly.

A good cook, they argued, should rely on fresh ingredients, crayfish, stock, pepper, onions, and long hours of cooking—not "white Maggi."

As a result, using it became almost a badge of laziness in some communities.

The Great Irony

Here's where the story becomes truly fascinating.

Many families proudly refused to allow AJI-NO-MOTO into their kitchens, believing they were avoiding MSG.

Yet almost every day they used seasoning cubes such as Maggi, Knorr, Royco, and similar brands.

What many people didn't realise was that these seasoning cubes often contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) as one of their ingredients.

In other words, they weren't avoiding MSG at all—they were simply rejecting the pure, unblended version while happily consuming it in mixed seasonings.

What Does Science Say Today?

Today, major international food safety authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), consider MSG safe for the general population when consumed in normal amounts as part of food.

While a small number of people may report temporary sensitivity after consuming large quantities without food, decades of research have not supported the widespread belief that MSG causes the long list of illnesses often attributed to it.

As with salt and other seasonings, moderation remains important.

Looking Back

The story of "white Maggi" is one of the greatest food myths many Nigerians grew up with.

A combination of global misinformation, local rumours, and cultural beliefs transformed a simple flavour enhancer into something many families feared.

Ironically, countless homes that banned AJI-NO-MOTO continued using seasoning cubes containing the same ingredient every single day.

So here's the question for tonight's discussion:

Did your family ban "white Maggi"?

If they did, what reason were you given?

Was it said to cause stroke, hypertension, blindness, "wash the stomach," or something even more interesting?

Let's hear the stories.
We used to dump the stuff in our food back in the day in boarding school. I loved it and was kinda sad it got a bad rep.

As a bachelor, I don't use any artificial seasoning to cook at all, just salt, crayfish, stock and grinded fish enough to make my meals taste good. MSG gives me heart palpitations a discovery I made during my undergraduate years.

Go to Bauchi, Misau particularly and see how they use it to cook.

I wanted to buy measured sugar then first time I went to their kasua(market). I asked their woman that if what she sells was sugar she told me yes because they don't understand English, I bought 1 cup then after like 3 days I wanted to drink garri na so I put the so-called sugar in my garri , immediately I put it in my mouth gosh I regretted that day I didn't know that it was ajinomoto the Hausa woman measured give me na when I looked at it well I kon see the length and texture then my roommate told me that it's ajinomoto I bought, that's the first time I saw it and I poured it away immediately.

So Hausa cum fulani use ajinomoto a lot.

MSG is dangerous to the health...and science has shown it over and over. The big players making profit from it are the ones deceiving you. And if you fall for it, na you sabi.

There are better natural umami flavor that you can use. If you like keep arguing. Its yoyr health. Many people who dropped it have seen great improvement in their health. That thing is so additive that you cant leave it easily. Your taste bud is so used to it. If its not there, you wont enjoy the food. This is just the truth.

You can argue that it is in tomatoes. Tomatoes is natural. Also, go and research the amount of tomatoes you shoukd consume to get the quantity in just. Maggi cube. Thats when you will understand. Lol. They always say...its in tomatoes. Whats the quantity there? Its like saying, sugar is in apple...so I can eat the whole sugar i want to eat. Lol. Eat am na. This is how they defended sugar for many years. Tobacco
...hahahahaha. they even sponsored researches to debunk it is related to cancer. But when they started dropping dead one by one, they had no choice but to stop it.

So, continue with your MSG. Feel free to even insult me. I wont reply you.

No one is insulting you. But don't think you'll just make a claim on a public forum without getting a response.

Firstly, which scientists said MSG is dangerous?

Secondly, sugar is safe for consumption if taken in moderation. Same with MSG and same with most other foods that many overzealous folks like you mislabel on tiktok.

Stop talking with emotions. Talk with knowledge.

I remember explaining this on nairaland and some oversabi people insulted me.

I worked briefly with ajino motto in 2013 and also I have brothers who worked there. One has served for about 20yrs as a senior staff at ajino moto at creek road Apapa and another of my brother did worked there for 8yrs before leaving the job. I am surrounded by friends and bosses that are still working in ajino moto and I have full knowledge of that

For years we've cooked and grown eating food cooked with ajino moto

From the white one to madish to the new delidawa and all are healthy.

If you like run from the natural white ajino moto, U will eat the unnatural one mixed with salts and many artificial seasonings in your favourite cubes

For years you avoided ajino moto but didn't ask how is this company still in existence?

Let me shock you, your favourite cubes they come to buy the natural ajino moto msg then take to their factories to mix with their own seasonings.

So even if you don't buy ajino moto directly, indirectly you are eating it from other cubes and they are in turn paying ajino moto huge fees

Goto their head office in Burma road Apapa and their factory at creek road and see how massive Thier factory is and the big big cars staffs are driving. Money choke and they excel

The best food seasonings to use, but in moderate measure to the size of food.

Nobody escape it except you don't eat.

Get a transparent glass cup, drop a cube of knorr inside the cup and add water, get it melted and see MSG settling at the bottom.

If my English no correct, my mood is neutral at the moment.

All What you said is true but there's some nuances you're leaving out. If you consume MSG with moderation ( 600mg to 800mg) then you will be well within the safe zone. Also, the very thing you're running away from Maggi and indomie noodles are also in bread, sachet spices and anything that contains salt.
People will say run away from Msg meanwhile they're guzzling down bottles of beer, they're standing at the suya stand ordering for a Suya of ,₦1000-₦3000 telling the seller to add more spices to the meat, na the same thing.
