By the British or American and other Western army positions if you fail military promotional examinations twice you cannot be promoted a Colonel. In a well considered and salutary decision, The Army Council while General Danjuma was Chief of Army Staff and Yar'Adua was Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters recommended Sanni Abacha and Ibrahim Babangida be retired because they failed the exams twice. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo who was the Head of State pleaded they retain them. Imagine how better for Nigeria it would have been if merit was upheld and Sanni Abacha and Ibrahim Babangida had been retired back then for failing military promotional exams twice! We would have been spared the evil the two men inflicted on Nigeria! I hope we will learn our lessons and enthrone merit above other less worthy considerations. |

Predictor3:I am talking about our reality and not what is conjectured. My focus is on the lessons to learn from the history that the story has become. |

helinues:I am not tied down to the past. I have moved on. Nigeria haas since moved on. However, a society, an individual and any given setup will go only as far as it learns from its past. That is the benefit of history!! Unfortunately the same Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo is said to have taken the study of History as a subject off our academic curriculum in Nigerian Secondary Schools!! Nigeria is presently saddled with a generation of youths who know next to nothing about our country. Not good for our future as a country. |

MERIT IS NEITHER STRATEGIC NOR AMBITIOUS IN NIGERIA,, THE DIVISIONISTS, RELIGIONISTS AND RACIALISTS KILL THEM. SKILLS AND EDUCATION HAVE BECOME NON RECKONABLE . |

orisa37:You are correct. That is quite sad. It is one big reason Nigeria is this less developed. For example, Nigeria could have won the World Cup sometime back if the national team selection was merit based. |

Obasanjo pleaded for Abacha's career not be terminated, ironically Abacha planned to terminate Obasanjo's life. |

pdppower:It is actually deeper than the ironic. Truth is, the mediocre usually seek to put down others at all costs. They do not want their inadequacies noticed. If you work in an office where your boss is a mediocre and you happen to be better at the job you will be wise to leave your skills at home each time you go to work! |

zoedew:The History story of Nigeria is distorted by different tribes , different people , so which of the versions would you have expected the FG to introduce to our academic curriculum? |

zoedew:That is what we see everywhere in Nigerian government. Mediocrity is being celebrated everywhere just have small change |
| Re: A Merit Based Society Is Best: The Sanni Abacha And Ibrahim Babangida Example. by zoedew(op): 8:06am On Aug 11 |
helinues:When I attended secondary school here in Nigeria there were standardised History textbooks that were devoid of distortions inspired by tribal inclinations. Professional Historians usually are agreed about those texts and work with the Ministry of Education in that respect. WE had no problems with that. |

zoedew:Which year was that? The main Nigeria History wasn't taught in Nigeria most especially the civil war. I dont know about not but not in the past |

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION ARE VERY MUCH NEEDED IN NIGERIA, BUT ABACHA WASTED PROF. TIMO ALUKO, THE GREAT ECONOMIST. BUHARI KILLED GOVERNOR AKEREDOLU OF ONDO STATE, THE GREATEST STATE SECURITY STRATEGIST. BUHARI HAD WASTED THE EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE OF PROF. Osinbajo. IT IS ALL WOES AND FAILURES GALORE. GOD SAVE NIGERIA. |

Beautifulday:You needed to have something to do with the Nigerian High Commission in the U.K. and you will experience the mediocrity we are talking about! You have mediocre staff there who cannot be touched even by the Minister!!! Now staff are being sent to U.K. from Nigeria to sort out the travelling Passport mess at the Nigerian High Commission in the U.K. and at public expense!! It is that bad!!!! |

Yes, Nigerian factor, although I don't know if it's a general black man's mentality. You can't be more skillful or vibrant than your boss. Otherwise, you a*rse will be kicked out zoedew: |

orisa37:Here we are, a people who have failed to earnestly demand that the political parties field a Yemi Osinbajo or an Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who are far better than the Tinubus, Atikus, Peter Obis and Kwaks of our political world! |

helinues:I agree that when in the very early 80's I studied History in the secondary school there were no standardised History textbooks on the matter. The Civil War had not ripened sufficiently into History at that time if you get what I mean. Research has since made that available. Now, there are generally agreed historical facts about the Nigerian Civil War. |

zoedew:Everywhere you turn in anything that has to do with Nigeria is crawling with mediocrity. All what everyone is looking for is money. No one what to deliver something equivalent to the money being requested. People in power place their families in positions they are not qualified to handle. The slogan, "nah your papa work" is now an anthem in every corner of this country. |

Beautifulday:Quite unfortunate. It is collectively harming our country. For instance, not many people know the story of how the Egbin Thermal Power Station at Ikorodu got critically damaged sometime back🧐😡. |

Beautifulday:Mediocrity is one big reason that Adeyemi conman was able to setup for recognition at the highest levels of State of the FG a fake FG Agency that was already interfacing with Diplomats in Nigeria!! Terrible thing!!! We have public servants in important positions who do not know their onions!! |
| Re: A Merit Based Society Is Best: The Sanni Abacha And Ibrahim Babangida Example. by zoedew(op): 9:03am On Aug 11 |
pdppower:Exactly my point: you will lose your job if you work under a mediocre of a boss and you are not smart enough to not let him know that you are more skilful at the job than he is! As to whether mediocrity is in the DNA of the Blackman I think not. Reason is that through time Blackman have excelled in every area of human endeavour. In Nigeria for instance, our culture are deeply ingrained with sayings, proverbs and slangs that deprecate mediocrity. Examples are: "ooo se, oooo je" in Yoruba language which in English language means "there is no food for the lazy man"! I could go on!! |

It's so unfortunate. We have it everywhere in Nigeria, a lawyer being the Minister of, or Commissioner for Education. So many square pegs in round holes. Beautifulday: |

zoedew:It was Abacha own that I heard, not IBB. President Obasanjo crossed his name off the list as he said Abacha was totally useless and would be completely lost without the military as he had zero skills of any sort. Fast forward a few years later, sane Abacha wanted to kpai him, see life. Even though IBB was Abacha's boss, he too was scared of him. We need a documentary on Abacha. |

moh1:I agree with you that Government should reintroduce History back to school curriculum. Research by Historians should validate or invalidate the rumoured but highly plausible failures of Sanni Abacha and Babangida at their promotional exams. |

zoedew:in your own opinion, they both fail, i have no issue with you assessment of there tenor but don't mislead Nigerian on their MILITARY carrier because they were never subjected to resignation or retirement base on fail promotion exam quoted by you. the two pass each promotion exam, go and verify before post. |

moh1:If you say so. The letters of that qualification are PSC - Post Staff College or Passed Staff Course. Check if either IBB or Abacha ever had PSC attached to their names.I have nothing personal against them. I’m concerned about the need to have a merit based society. You will agree with me they both were bad news for good governance in Nigeria. They both have cost us a lot. |
