Statement of Events I was working with an elevator company as an Elevator Technician when I came to Nigeria. A few months later, I received a message on LinkedIn from a man who wanted to establish an elevator company. He told me he needed me to help build the company and serve as the Lead Elevator Engineer. I agreed to the offer, resigned from my previous employment, and joined his company. A few weeks after I resumed, I noticed that the man began involving me in some of his other businesses, including his paper business and other activities unrelated to elevator engineering. I did not initially complain, but this began affecting my career and the work I was employed to do. I also observed how he treated some of his other employees. On several occasions, I witnessed him verbally harassing and physically mistreating staff, including slapping them. Regarding my own employment, the man has little or no technical knowledge of elevator engineering. Whenever I made professional recommendations or raised concerns about technical decisions, he often rejected them. However, when the consequences of those decisions occurred, he would blame me heavily and make me feel as though I was incompetent or did not know what I was doing. The major incident occurred on a Friday. After completing our normal schedule for the day, I planned to repair the company's generator because I knew we had a very demanding schedule on Monday and I wanted to ensure that the generator was functioning properly beforehand. The man repeatedly ordered me to return to the office. I politely explained to him, "Sir, if we don't fix this generator now, it could delay us on Monday." Despite my explanation, he continued insisting that I return to the office. Based on the previous circumstances and my assessment of the situation, I refused to immediately leave the generator. He then came out of his vehicle and approached me aggressively, appearing as though he wanted to physically assault me. I tried to move away from him to avoid a confrontation. However, he grabbed my clothing and pulled it forcefully, causing one of my buttons to come off. There were police officers present at the scene. He ordered them to put me into his vehicle, but they refused after witnessing what had happened. He then called other police officers on patrol, who subsequently arrested me. At the police station, he made several allegations against me, including an allegation that I was the person who assaulted him. I was detained from Friday until Monday. During this period, he allegedly gave money to the police officers. My mother eventually came to the station on Monday and secured my release. I was told that he would only allow me to be released on the condition that I sign an undertaking stating that I would continue working for him. I was under significant pressure and had already spent several days in detention, so I agreed to sign the undertaking in order to secure my release. Immediately after I signed the undertaking, his treatment of me became worse. At the end of the month, he deducted two days' pay from my salary. I asked him why the money had been deducted because, to the best of my knowledge, I had not missed those two working days. He told me that the deduction was for the days I had spent in police detention. I became upset about this and returned to the police station to report the matter. However, the police were unable to recover the money for me. I subsequently informed him that if he expected me to continue working for him, I wanted my salary to be paid weekly, with my monthly salary divided into four payments. He refused this arrangement. Since then, I have not resumed work. I now believe that because the undertaking did not prevent me from stopping work, he has decided to pursue an assault case against me. I have now been invited to the police station tomorrow in connection with the alleged assault. I maintain that I did not assault him. I attempted to avoid a physical confrontation when he approached me aggressively, and he was the person who grabbed my clothing and pulled it. I am concerned about what may happen at the police station tommorow and would like proper legal advice and protection regarding my rights, the alleged assault case, the undertaking I signed under pressure, my unpaid/deducted wages, and the circumstances surrounding my previous detention. |

This is absolutely crazy. Sorry for this ordeal. Obviously, the company is solely run by the wicked man. Our policemen too are tools of intimidation by the rich and powerful. Please, I'd advise you to get a competent lawyer. The boss must pay for physical, emotional and psychological damage. Also harassment and assault. I really hope you see this through in court. The man should pay punitively. Na werey man. |

Xup man, trust you have evidence of salary payment from him and an employment letter? Look for National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) |

Someone is treating you badly and you are still being useful to him to the extends that he wants you to keep working for him by force after maltreating you and putting you inside prison. Just become useless to him and watch him let you go. |
| Re: My Boss Is Assaulting Me by decatalyst(m): 6:17pm On Aug 11 |
Osgilliat:Nah this part dey surprise me more. It is clearly an unconducive work environment, and you 'willingly' signed the agreement? Well, your help is hinged on the quality of your lawyer. A good lawyer will tear that "agreement" into shreds. He will also press charges not only against the man and his company, but against the Police for unlawful detention and harassment. Some people are worse with power. |

The opening of your narration suggests you are not a Nigerian. Are you here legally? If yes go to twitter and narrate this story. Tag Human Rights Activists and the IG of police. Don't just sit there and allow this man use you to wipe his behind. |
| Re: My Boss Is Assaulting Me by galantjoe(m): 9:59pm On Aug 11 |
My candid advice is don't attempt to honor the police invitation; run away to another far location Leave your current location to a place he can't relocate you, Within 1 or 2 search he will rest He wants to use intimidation and victimization to force u to continue to work with him |

Oludiary:@Op report the matter to three places: Human Rights National Industrial Court of Nigeria. LIRS (If the company is in Lagos) This one will hold the man in his balls. Lagos no dey joke with taxes. If you want this issue to be REALLY serious, go straight to twitter, tekk your story mentioning the company, then tag the above handles to intervene. Sit back and enjiy the ride. Get a Lawyer who is hungry to win multi million naira case. |

| Re: My Boss Is Assaulting Me by AndroBlaze: 10:09am On Aug 12 |
spice123:Follow this advice to the tee and make the man's crimes public as stated (only say the truth and things you can verify online), you will be surprised others will come forward with similar stories of what the horrid man has done (you are definitely not his first victim). Public exposure may also help you get a befitting counsel at a cheaper price. Likely the bully will back down when it gets to uncomfortable. Please don't change your mind and fight the man all the way. Even if you choose to forgive him, fighting him means you are helping to save another innocent soul from this irrational harassment, and you will be proud of yourself later on. |

Oludiary:There is nothing surprising about this, the man has a "god" complex, until he is brought down, he won't think of changing. |

A lot of things have gone wrong here which would have been mitigated or prevented if you had a lawyer. No employer can force you to continue to work by signing an undertaking at a police station. That is practically slavery. Contracts of employment are civil matters which the police have no jurisdiction. Even the DPO of that station can get into trouble for that. I have spent sometime giving legal advice to the police at some point in my career. They know they can't meddle in civil matters, hence why they couldn't assist you in recovering your money. Yes, you can stop working whenever you want. That undertaking has no legal effect whatsoever and was also gotten through duress and intimidation. You maintained you didn't assault him, so if you do go to the station without a lawyer, insist for one before making any statement. You are guaranteed the right to legal representation. Do not be afraid of it being taken to court. They have no case. You only need a lawyer to represent you. It is a simple matter. Your boss is only intimidating you because you lack legal representation. |

Nigeria is such a lawless Country . The worst part of the problem is that most people that behave the way your boss is doing are being protected by the NPF that's supposed to uphold the law. Same way my landlord that gave me a quit notice is threatening to come and pull my door by the month end just after 2 months he gave me the notice to pack ending by December. |

| Re: My Boss Is Assaulting Me by motymop: 1:50pm On Aug 12 |
Next time, when your boss says leave it and come to office...just leave it, you are an employee, stop doing too much you can be replaced anytime, the truth is that it is just a job and job sometimes does not mean you should give all your all, that is the truth Give what you can give and leave the rest, no kill your self as for assault, start to dey look for another job, believe me, if this continues, you will lose your self esteem, sometimes you just have to challenge the boss and he will start respecting you i mean documenting all the assault, if possible report to a human right lawyer with evidence, remember, also any undertaking you signed under duress (while detained in a police cell) is legally invalid the reason employers don't respect their staffs when it comes to assault is because they don't challenge them and build boundaries. |

They are called BOSS for a reason. Ever since the days of our childhood, 'bosses' have always been wicked. Thanks goodness for actors who always manage to get rid of them. ![]() |
