WOW... blacks are still just 4% of the British population? That is smaller than I imagined.🤔
Yeah, it's quite tiny, which is why I get amused at some of the racists screaming that blacks are taking over!

The song lyrics were the first red flag. The way he’d ramble about Tinie Tempah or Eminem, or how black artists like Beyoncé were sexualised by white men, without offering any evidence to substantiate his claims. Or else there were the film clips, from Fish Tank and Kidulthood, which he’d tell us to discuss without offering guidance on how to do so. And this was if he was even in the classroom at all. He often arrived late and left early, once teaching for a single hour when four were scheduled.

So when I saw Jason Arday’s name in the news, my first thought was: “finally!” As a student on the Education module Arday taught at the University of Roehampton, back in autumn 2018, a module replete with music but shockingly light on education, I can’t help but have thoughts on the story that’s unfolded over the last couple of weeks. For me, though, the real surprise is that it didn’t all come out sooner.

Before Arday arrived at Roehampton, university leaders enthusiastically told us of his amazing backstory: how he only learnt to speak at 11 and write at 18, and how excited they were to have him teaching us. Naturally, we were all very interested to see the man himself, even if the module he’d be teaching had been written by a previous lecturer.

I can honestly describe Arday’s teaching as terrible. He rarely used the PowerPoint slides. Instead, he usually sat casually on a desk, giving his generalised views on racism without ever referring to any academic theories — let alone those relevant to the “Youth Participation and Identities” module he was supposed to be teaching.

But even more than his lectures, what really disappointed me was how Arday failed his students. Roehampton is a very diverse university, both in terms of racial background and neurodiversity, and takes inclusion seriously. More than two-thirds of the class were either black or from other non-white backgrounds. Most were women, and most had come straight from sixth form as the first member of their families to attend university.

At first, my classmates were charmed by Arday’s cheerful attitude and inspirational stories. To start with, too, they were interested in his claims that white people were guilty of every kind of prejudice. Yet as the module progressed, and he failed to turn up for yet another class, things began to change. It gradually dawned on us that we were learning nothing of substance, and that much of his talk was nonsense.

When it came to our assessment, Arday recommended we answer one of the two essay questions — there were four options — that mentioned ethnicity. This, after all, was the only thing he’d talked to us about. I remember one young, black, female student coming to me in the library as we began to draft our essays and saying: “I don’t know what to do, I’ve read my notes and there is nothing there I can use!” She wasn’t the only one, and I offered advice as best I could, writing my own essay using the online resources Arday’s predecessor had left.

In the end, Arday gave me 70% for my essay. That sounds good — except that my average for the year was 75%, meaning my overall result was dragged down. Particularly as Arday had given my work no feedback, I asked for a meeting. At Roehampton, marking is blind, so he wouldn’t have known who’d written which essay. In our meeting, I explained that 70% was a low mark for me and asked him to provide feedback. Suddenly, his friendly, confident demeanour changed. I now saw a side of him I’d never seen before: angry, but also scared. Arday implied that I was racist, and said that the only reason I wasn’t happy with 70% was due to my “white privilege”. He was clearly upset at being questioned, and I ended the meeting as quickly as possible.

Arday left Roehampton shortly afterwards, and I never saw him again. Given that he could neither teach nor support his students, it’s little wonder that he appeared psychologically incapable of coping with criticism. The University of Roehampton was seemingly aware of his failings yet did nothing, avoiding controversy by allowing him to move on to another set of students.

Indeed, if any one of the universities Arday had taught at before being appointed to Cambridge had been prepared to point out that the emperor had no clothes, he might never have faced the humiliations of the past two weeks. Some serious soul-searching must surely follow from all the academics who enabled him to climb the academic ladder. Did they really help this young man, or were they only thinking of their own reputations? They might also spare a thought for all his students.

I’m reminded here of the tale of the Post Turtle, where a farmer finds a turtle stuck on a fencepost. “That Post Turtle didn’t get up there by himself,” the farmer says. “He doesn’t belong there, and you wonder who put him there. He has no idea what to do while he’s up there, and having been elevated beyond his ability to function, he’s never going to get anything done while he is there.” He adds: “You just want to help the poor bugger get down, and you can’t help but wonder what kind of idiot put him up there in the first place.” It’s a question Arday’s many backers may now wish to ask.

People like you disgust me! Self-aware about what exactly? So, what if blacks are a minority in Cambridge? Are whites the majority in Universities in black countries around the world? I don't follow. 😒😒

2. Issue? The system? Na oyinbo wey dey allow black/brown low-lives bastardize their system of meritocracy, I go blame. 😒😒
You actually disgust me...you stink, to add it up, you have no mind of your own

There is nothing like meritocracy. Majority of white professionals in the UK got a job because they knew someone and some got because of legacy opportunities.

They only preach meritocracy to you and you fell for it

Reflect on this if you have a brain

Personally, I don't take your opinion seriously and you are someone I don't want any of my people to be around with..

The University of Glasgow has told The Herald that Professor Jason Arday, the academic embroiled in a growing plagiarism row, has never held a visiting professorship there, directly contradicting his official biography on Cambridge's website.

When dem elevate him, it wasn't racism abi. Na people like you we Africans need to ostracize from our societies so that we go fit grow and be accountable for our failures
motymop:
so many silly people in the comment section.

This guy was targeted because of his Race and the originator was Nathan Cofnas a very controversial white professor that was sacked by Cambridge and who have been writing articles to smear black people, he alerted a Cambridge faculty member and ran Arday's 2015 PhD thesis through a plagiarism-detection software. He publicly posted side-by-side text comparisons showing over 100 passages matching an earlier 2009 doctoral thesis.

Cofnas framed the discovery as a direct attack on diversity hiring, arguing that elite universities lower academic standards for minority candidates and then the main stream media pick up the story and started their own agenda

see...the Liverpool John Moores University, the school that awarded the black guy PhD had previously investigated and cleared him of wrongdoing regarding his thesis. However, following mounting media pressure and calls from some Cambridge academics for an independent inquiry into his hiring, Cambridge announced a review of its processes, leading to Arday's resignation

you know what, as a black guy, never be the poster boy for any agenda of white people cultural war ( immigration or any stuff) it is always a setup, white institutions wont protect you when things goes south

If a white professional makes a mistake or falls short, it's treated as an individual failure. If a Black professional placed on a pedestal makes a mistake, the culture war turns it into a verdict on all Black people

...he found himself at Cambridge University without any background check? Climbed the academic ladder successfully until he was discovered to be whatever they accuse him of.
The question should be, how did he escape unchecked to that stage?

People at Cambridge knew well that he was a fraud, but they let him slide because he was DEI brownie point for them, completely ignoring the fact that that meant he was a plague on the students, the real victims in all of this, and of course, those whose works he plagiarized along the way. 😒😒

You sound like someone that can not separate truth from lies

And the funniest stuff there is chatgpt, germini for you to fact check the misinformation you wrote.

You are an example of Nigerians that always want to sound intelligent but lacks critical thinking

Kobojunkie:
1. The system is just as corrupt as any other system, yet black folks want desperately to be included in it and go as far as to cry victim when it spits them out? 😒😒

2. So, it cannot work in Africa because Africans don't have any respect for merit at all. Yet, here you are campaigning that an African without merit should have been allowed to continue in a merit-based system, which you also think is corrupt? Why? So that he can bend to steal money next? I don't understand why you lot reason the way you do. 😒

3. That you don't pay attention to news about them does not mean they do not exist. Just the other day, I listened to a report about a lawyer who plagiarized court documents and was almost debarred for it. People are caught regularly; this man chose to double down with more lies, escalating his issue to the point that it got. 😒😒
1. I am sure you are aware that two things can be true at the same time right? The system can be as corrupt as any other systems and some certain people will still prefer it. For instance, some die hard immans hate the western way of life but would rather live in the west than live in Saudi Arabia whose sharia law they so much love. grin

2. Please stop being such a liar. Show me any of my post where I campaigned for him. Stop lying 🤥 because of cheap internet point

3. How did you know that I don't pay attention to news? You don't even know me in person and you managed to arrive at such a conclussion. grin

Pease show me a notable cases of white academia with similar case that was headline news for weeks unending or you think this new was just from last or two weeks ago?

Since you have decided to be uncouth and cannot differentiate between a question and a statement then I put it to you that you lack the knowledge which you claim to posses.

A lot of people here responded with facts and respectfully too, those are the true intelligent ones, and I appreciate them for it. Swerve!
