Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu has jokingly referred to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic Republic of Britain”.

He made the remark on the Israeli podcast Melech Blitzer Haim on Thursday 13 August 2026, while objecting to British media coverage of Israel.

Netanyahu praised British writer Randolph Churchill for “positive” coverage of Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War, then said: “Go find that in Britain today, which you could call the Islamic Republic of Britain.”

Later during the podcast, Netanyahu seemed to refer to comments in 2022 by current US Vice-President JD Vance that the UK may become the first nuclear-armed islamic country.

“Someone said the first Islamic republic with nuclear weapons will be the Islamic Republic of Britain,” Netanyahu said, adding, “we are making sure there won’t be another one here, in Iran.”

Tensions have grown between the UK and Israel since 2024 when the Labour Party took power in Britain.
