That’s usually the first sign that makes me realize I’m back to naija Unfortunately, the first embarrassment to Nigeria for foreigners coming to the country for the first time Not all blacks are Nigerians, those airport people would think na we we and start begging foreigners for money Yet the airport authority is silent and doing nothing to clean the country of this menace |

Adebaba1:I once read one Egyptian woman's description of her parents who retired and moved back from the USA to Egypt for their retirement All the stories we tell about bad Nigerian artisans and contractors , Egypt has them as well. Plus corruption self. Parents experienced am promax. The funniest bit was that they wanted to report one of the contractors for cheating them, and the guys mother came to beg them. All African countries are alike. |

It's not exclusive to the airports. Nigerians are always on the lookout for ways to beg or extort people. That's why the country is known as Abegistan. We can beg for Africa. It's very very shameful. |

Samuels90:IN a way, that's good to hear, but all African countries are alike. Resource dependent, poorly run, refuse to use what they have to make things the world needs...which leads them to become dependent on borrowing and more borrowing and more debt. |

ariesbull:It happened to me at the Abuja airport too, with the officials begging for money, my bluetooth headset, and my personal clippers when they searched through my luggage. Begging is their culture at Nigerian airports and its been like that forever. Even NDLEA folks at the airport are guilty of this. I once missed an international flight at the airport because they delayed me saying they suspected that I had something suspicious in my luggage. It was local herbs (Agbo) they saw in my luggage and said they will have to take it to their lab for testing. I was running late for my flight. They delayed me for over 30 mins and counting. One of them said I needed to settle them else I'll wait longer before boarding my flight. I gave them N5000 before they allowed me through. By the time I made it to the gate, it was closed already and I couldnt board my flight. I was supposed to travel from Lagos > Frankfort> New York > Atlanta. The entire flights were messed up because of these miscreants at the airports. Gladly, the airline I used back then were able to change my flights to the next day's flight at no extra free which wasnt my plans. Even in the bathrooms at the airports, they are people there pretending to be cleaning and are begging eaxh person that comes in for money as if they dont get paid their salaries. Its annoying. I think the minister, Festus Keyamo needs ro do something about the extortion at the airports else irrepairable loss of Nigeria's reputation may come in. I think every traveler needs to record all these people at airports and post them on social media so everyone knows who the culprits are. |

ariesbull:How many airports have you used? Na Abuja own I wan talk or the one in Owerri. Even Ibadan. In Enugu Airport, those ones are irredemable. t They call you "London based" as part of the hailing as if that is an achievement. |

Jayhome24:How many will.you lock up. How many times has FAAN clamped down. But within days they are back. It is like trying to hold the sea back. And the source is evident, destroyed economy that is making animals of men.and stripping even the timid of their dignity. The problem is that we pretend not to know what is behind this and worse act correctness thinking it doesn't matter. But even the upper and upper middle class can no longer ignore it. Society is delaminating. I am on an engineering field right now, I have been aghast....amazed.. It is strictly forbidden and a case for immediate dismissal but his story is simple. Parents are now forced into extraordinary measures to make ends meet. And in his case care has to be shared. His house is empty of everyone. We are in extraordinary times and we need to understand these people and make the necessary adjustments to accommodate them one.way or the other or the situation can go south very quickly and lead to serious social unrest and God forbid the breakdown of law and order. That particular worker has been with me for twelve years...what do I do.... |

It is not just I'm bank; it is virtually everywhere. Cooperate beggars are making it for one to even think of assisting genuine people in need. It is sickening! The most annoying part is, these guys are even in some bank branches, mostly at the ATM stand. Each time I want to use first bank ATM closed to my work place, I have palpitations. The bank security guards would subtly demand that you give them something out of the little you withdraw. They start by forming familiarity.. "were you not the one I met at Kangaroo yesterday" and other shit like that. After that, it is drop something for us oga. How will I go to the ATM to withdraw 5k and drop 500 or 1k for you after bank charges. Why I no kuku use the POS. |

More people will report them and put them on social media. I will come with video camera on my glasses and record them and put them on social media. Until some of those crooks and beggars at immigration and customs in MMA2 are prosecuted and sent to prison nothing will really changes. Just like the Naija government officials and politicians who have not be dealt with the way China deals with corrupt government officials No consequences no change. |

Jayhome24:Sack a hundred. They will be back in a week. Are the DSS and policemen not under this same evo only struggling for survival, together with immigration and customs. Why do you think the President recently raised the compensation of the military.... Someone must have whispered to him that their take home pay is compromising their allegiances and eroding their oath and threatened to completely undermine the war against terror. If you cannot see the nexus between the declining economy and the degrading fabric of society in all sorts of ways, some unimaginable just a few years ago then...I really don't know. But better be for your own safety and sanity. |

It is unfortunate but that is how the Nigerian society is designed. Nigeria operates a dog eat dog system, illegal money is factored as part of the economy. People in government from president to the least person steal public funds, people in private sector use their pen to also steal funds, police extort money from the people. In fact, everyone uses their office, position or what they have to steal or extort from the next person. People who don't have the office to use their position or pen to make illegal money but have the heart of stone go into yahoo, arm robbery, kidnapping, rituals, fake drugs etc. People who don't have the office and position and also don't have the heart to go into kidnapping etc become corporate beggars just to make that extra illegal money. Somebody mentioned arresting them but enforcing the law is challenging in Nigeria cos people who are enforcing the law commit worse crimes. Can their ogas at the top swear they are living only on their salaries without other corrupt deals to augument? If so, how were they able to acquire all they have? Unfortunately there is no escaping of these sorts of things, it is already baked into the economy by design. Nigeria wants people to be poor so that the poor will slave for and worship the rich. When money miss road people pass through that same airport, they are happy with the begging so that they can dole out money to people and use the opportunity to be worshipped and validated. |
