A colleague died recently, and veryone of us had to contribute money to transport his corpse to Maiduguri.

As a Muslim, we bury our dead wherever death meets us.

- IBB's wife died in london, but was brought home and buried in IBB's house
- Kure (former governor of niger state) was taken back to his village in lapai and buried in his house
- rimi's daughter died in london, flown back and buried in kano
- abacha died in abuja but was taken to kano and buried
- dantata died in qatar and was buried in saudi arabia
- there was an algerian man, whose son died and buried in france. he went there, exhumed the corpse, took it back home and buried
these are just some instances, there are so many more

Nah where you get land, you dey bury your dead. You can't bury your dead in another man land even in your village.

Not necessarily. It varies according to culture. In mine, a woman is buried in her father's compound

I don't really care where and whether or not they even bury me.

Government is supposed to provide land for cemetery, maintain the land and guard it.

go to osun where I'm from. Muslim even burry at home then the Christian.. I haven't ask people why they burry at home, but from my finding, some do so to avoid children fighting because of property. My let grandpa and his siblings build the house in our village, some of his siblings are Muslim.. just recently, one of my uncle, my late dad younger brother wants to build a church on the land in our compound, this said land, my grandpa siblings children who were Muslim were also using same land to dry palm nuts... It cuz alot of fight but elders in the family were able to settle it. If not people were buried there, they would have sold that land. So most are buried at home to avoid family problems.

And you won't feel troubled or haunted knowing they are your kith and kin, you are their descendants, their flesh and blood, and they are your ancestors, so you are at rest. Now I can imagine if they are not related to you, you'd feel unease being in the compound where unknown corpses are buried. Even if I know they will do nothing to me, I'd feel uncomfortable. Summary is, blood feels at home in presence of blood.

we blame government in everything whereas churches and mosque can do that too. In my village, some church have there own cemetery 🪦. My grandma who pass on few years ago ask us not to bury her at home, that we should bury her at the church cemetery, my late dad was also bury at the church cemetery too. Churches have money to buy plot of land, fence it and then fix price for it. No cemetery is free anywhere.

In Africa, especially among the blacks, we believe the departed dead are always around us in the unseen world. We believe they reincarnate also. Keeping them around is also a way of preserving our history and family line.

If you like Go and bury your parents abroad or in the cemetery..who cares. But the kain chain of calamities that will invoke to befall you. Dem no dey tell man.

In my village we bury our loved house in the house.
My family have been given the directive to bury me and my wife in my village house bedroom.
My mum was buried in the sitting room.

A lot of factors.

1. The Deceased can expressly request for it (most times they own the Land)

2. Some people want to rest where their father, mother rest and since it u In the compound, why not?

3. It is Cheap (virtually no cost implications aside the digging and some bricks and cement)

4. Cultural. Some Cultures don't do Public Cemetery.

5. Religious reasons etc.

Whichever practices chosen, it is all good 👍

If your grandfather was born in the village, he can say that is where he came from, Village.
Your father, was he born in the same village?
If he was born in a city, is it not that city he came from?

And if your compound is in any state in Nigeria, where you bought land and built your house, so be it.

My dad is late and buried inside our house, his compound. When my mum finishes her sojourn on earth at her ripe,she will be buried close to her husband, her grave aligned to the same position as that of her husband. But in between the two graves, a space will be provided for my own grave as their only male son and heir to the dynasty. That closes a historic chapter and it is not disputable. I must be return to the ground where I drank the first water from the pond and where woman danced when they heard that a male child, the successor has been born. I must be return to it.
My children will take the decision of their mum and themselves that if they decide continue to follow our Igbo culture. Otherwise it is up to them if they want to start going to public grounds or not.

Laying a deceased to rest in a family compound comes with positive and negative factors.

But the negative part is that it invites termites destroying any plants in the compound and also attacked the building mostly if the people do not reside in that compound but only visit after a long period of time.

Burial registered on church land is not admissible in govt office. Same as Church marriage.
