Scammed Of ₦200,000 Through A Friend’s Whatsapp – Please Advise by MissOpe(op): 12:00pm On Aug 17
Good day everyone.

I am currently dealing with a very painful situation, and I need advice from people who have experience with fraud cases and fund recovery in Nigeria.

A close friend contacted me through WhatsApp asking me to help her with some funds. Because I knew the person, I believed it was genuinely her and agreed to help.

She sent me an account number to make the transfer, which I did from my PalmPay account. She later contacted me again and gave me another account number, asking me to send another amount.

At that point, I became suspicious and asked her to confirm that I was actually communicating with her. Instead of confirming, she started giving different excuses and avoiding the question.

That was when I realized that I might have been dealing with someone who had compromised or impersonated my friend's WhatsApp account, and that I had been scammed.

The total amount I lost was ₦200,000.

Immediately after realizing what had happened, I contacted OPay because the money was sent to an OPay account. I requested that the recipient's account be frozen/restricted, but OPay directed me to contact PalmPay since PalmPay was the sending institution.

I reported the matter to PalmPay and PalmPay subsequently informed me that they require a Police Report or Court Order before they can proceed with the case.

I am currently obtaining the Police Report and will upload it as requested.
Please, I need advice from anyone who has experienced something similar:

Has anyone successfully recovered money transferred to an OPay account belonging to a scammer?

After submitting the Police Report, how long does the recovery process normally take?

Is there anything else I should do to increase my chances of recovering the ₦200,000?

Should I also report the matter to the EFCC or the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre?

I have the transaction receipts, WhatsApp conversations, and other evidence relating to the incident.

Please, I would really appreciate practical advice from people who have gone through a similar situation, especially anyone who has successfully recovered their money.

Thank you.

If you get the court order, a restriction can be placed on the account but if the money has been moved then unfortunately you won't be able to recover the funds immediately.

I think there's also a way to blacklist the users BVN by the financial institution.

Thank you very much for the information. I really appreciate it.
I am already in the process of obtaining the Police Report, as PalmPay requested it before they can proceed with the case. I am hoping the funds have not been moved yet and that a restriction can still be placed on the recipient's account.
Please, regarding the BVN blacklisting you mentioned, do you mean that PalmPay/OPay can flag or blacklist the beneficiary's BVN for suspected fraud? If so, do you know the proper procedure for requesting this?
Also, if the money has already been moved from the account, is there still a process through which it can be traced and recovered?
Thank you.

The beneficiary's BVN can be blacklisted by the financial institution which they used to receive the money. You need to gather evidence and proof of scam. Send a formal complaint directly to the fraud desk or customer care email of that specific bank.

Also obtain a police report and court order to enable the bank carry out the blacklisting and recovery of the money.

If the money has been moved out of the account, there's nothing the bank can do. After blacklisting the BVN, the customers accounts will be frozen. They will be required to visit the bank and clear up the issue.

Sorry for the loss but then you sent 200k to someone just like that? Sebi you know the person's name? Once it doesn't match with the Recipient's Account number provided, that should put you on caution in this age and time!

Next time, always make sure you confirm the authenticity of such requests by making a direct GSM call to the person making such financial requests through WhatsApp or SMS so as to avoid such an unpleasant situations.

As it stands, the money is as good as gone as such scammers usually make use of account details of random POS Operators in other to avoid being traced. You might be lucky to make one of such POS operators who hardly carry out due diligence on customers who appears overnight with strange transfers into the account of the operators.

Considering the amount involved and the amount expected to be spent on mobilizing the security agencies and the court order, the venture might look unreasonable depending on the location as in State the money was received, but if you can afford it, good luck!

With my experience working as a customer service agent with a fintech in Nigeria...your chances of getting back your money is almost zero except you see the person one on one and held him/she.

Let me explain: We received atleast 20 of this types of calls daily in the contact centre and believe me you...the person did it to almost 200 people who have also reported from different banks.

The bank will place a lien of same amount so his/her acctn will read negative.

Imagine 10 people sent money and reported totalling let say 1.8m

So you that sent 200k even if he had not withdrawn the money..it will automatically disappear BC his acct will be reading -1.8m

Reaching out to the person will be like searching for gold.

This is a very painful experience, MissOpe, and I am deeply sorry for the loss. WhatsApp account hijacking via OTP scams is incredibly rampant right now. To give you direct answers based on how fintech recovery works in Nigeria:

1 The Bank Dilemma: OPay was wrong to bounce you back; however, PalmPay is correct that a formal Court Order (Mareva Injunction) or a signed Police Report from the anti-fraud unit is legally required to permanently freeze a suspect's wallet and initiate a chargeback.

2 Next Steps: Once you upload the Police Report to PalmPay, their fraud team will officially communicate with OPay's compliance unit. The recovery timeline usually takes between 7 to 14 working days, depending entirely on whether the scammer has already moved the ₦200,000 out of that OPay wallet.

3 Maximize Chances: Do not rely on regular police alone. Immediately forward your transaction receipts, the scammer's OPay account number, and WhatsApp screenshots to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) via their official online reporting portal. They are highly efficient with digital tracking and can trace the BVN/NIN tied to that OPay account.

Keep pushing immediately before the funds are entirely liquidated. I hope you get a positive outcome.

Do you know why fraud is prevalent in Nigeria?

If you go to the police or EFCC asking them to help you recover N100,000, they will laugh at you and ask you to bring N500,000 in order to pursue that matter..

We had a friend who was duped N1.9 million in a fake federal job racketeering scheme in one of the Teaching Hospitals, we advised him to go to the EFCC.

He came back and told us that the EFCC said they would not listen to any case if it is not from N10 million naira upwards..

He counted his losses and moved on, instead of pouring water into the baskets to procure more losses chasing after a fraudster..

Fraudsters know that it is expensive to chase after them, that is why they are confident in doing their scams and even insult you when you call them out.

Nigeria is a fraud-friendly country and it is a pity..

A different account number is the number 2 red flag.
The first one itself is the person asking you for money, which you should have followed up with a call first before proceeding to honor the request.
I pray you recover your funds. And may God bless you for looking out for a "friend in need"

My advice if you really want to give ur self peace of mind just let go. My reason is the account u send the money to might be a P.O.S vendor. Similar thing happened to me some years back, i decided to trace the money through the police after spending so much money, time and energy we finally found the owner of the account to be a poor P.O.S girl. i was scammed 80k and still spend almost 70k in looking for recovery, police really tried cos if we had get the real criminal he would pay my money and all i spend on the process, so madam if you have the energy and the financial capacity you can proceed with the recovery process through appropriate channels, it is well my sis

But wait oo WHY DID U COVER THE SCAMMER NAME NAH

The problem you'd encounter is getting a court order. This shị̀t happened to me last year though for a lesser amount. I was able to get a police order for 3k or thereabout. When it was time to get a court order, the court man I met charged me 50k. I tried all I could to make him see reason that 50k was too high for the amount I want to recover, he wouldn't buldge and I had no choice than to let it go.

If you can secure court order cheaply, you'd be able to freeze the account and possibly recover your money.
