The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Jacob Irewa, for allegedly setting his wife ablaze following a domestic dispute in the Felele area of Lokoja, the state capital.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the couple’s residence in Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Salisu Oyiza Afusat, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident at about 8:30 p.m. and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.

The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim allegedly burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.

The suspect threatened his wife before fetching petrol from his motorcycle and setting her on fire.

The victim survived the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.

The police spokesperson said the suspect admitted during questioning that he set his wife ablaze, adding that the command had commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to seek lawful means of resolving domestic disputes and avoid actions that could endanger lives.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution after the conclusion of investigations.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.

I saw the news and cried do you know why?

My name is also Jacob and I am from Kogi

I have always been trying all I could to support my wife and 3kids but she never appreciates and uses insult on me on daily basis

This is someone who has never in her life worked so I am the only one working even when I lost my job for 2yrs I still managed to provide and there was nvr a day we did not eat 2times in my house.

Today I did all I could and prepared the best meal for my family and I served my wife this king I can pleased her again but what she said next shocked me.
"weting you dey use Ur head think? I said what I want is rice today and why did you prepare yam and give me"
Meanwhile she just said...ah if I fit see red oil rice...same here told my kids go to lesson when you are back we prepare yam.

I was so angry we insulted each other I used words in her life she will never recover

We have not talked to eachother till now BC I was angry and I don't care if she is too.

I used words I am not suppose to use like I fit kill you for this house you don't know me.

So now I saw this news and was like ehhn

Women can destroy you ooooo, I won't lie to you my wife is 80% good but you see snobbing, ignoring, lack of encouraging words, motivation she lacks to them.

This is an absolutely horrific and monstrous act of cruelty. For a man to resort to fetching petrol and setting his own wife on fire over a minor domestic disagreement about clothes shows a complete and terrifying lack of human empathy. No dispute under a marital roof ever justifies this level of extreme violence. Huge commendation to the Kogi State Police Command for the swift arrest of the suspect. He must be prosecuted to the absolute maximum limit of the law to serve as a strong warning. There must be zero tolerance for domestic abuse in our society. I pray for the victim's complete and speedy medical recovery.
