Muslim-Muslim Ticket: The Greatest Gift Christian Nigerians Gave: How Relevance Was Relinquished on a Platter of Gold Within the last two weeks, a series of statements from prominent Islamic voices have made the underlying political reality impossible to ignore. First came Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, who praised the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket pioneered under President Bola Tinubu, urged Muslims to secure their Permanent Voter Cards, and spoke of showing “the infidels their limit.” He framed population and electoral strength as justification for continued Muslim political unity and questioned why advocating for it was wrong when other groups pursue their own interests. Around the same period, Yoruba-speaking cleric Shafiy Adeba went further still. In a widely circulated video, he claimed Muslims have a religious right to fight and enslave non-Muslims, whom he repeatedly called “kafir.” He stated that Allah commanded Muslims to fight them, enslave them, lock them in their homes, prevent them from going to market or farm, and that “war against kafir is rooted in Islam.” He warned that failure to impose such measures would invite reciprocal action. Then came Sheikh Musa Salihu Alburhan, an ally of Jingir and a member of the leadership of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah. Responding to criticism of Jingir’s language, Alburhan declared: “For me, having a Muslim as leader while I eat grass is better than having an infidel as leader while I eat chicken every day.” He argued that a Muslim-Muslim arrangement benefits Islam because “ninety per cent of things are covered, while only 10 per cent are revealed, all for our good.” He insisted they were not campaigning for Tinubu but “campaigning for Islam,” and suggested that some of those complaining about hardship were themselves engaging in conduct prohibited by Islam. These statements form a pattern. They are blunt, dismissive of Christians and other non-Muslims, and are a deliberate show of power. In a fragile multi-religious country already strained by insecurity, kidnappings, and ethno-religious violence, the language is inflammatory and dangerous. Instead of social media outrage, these remarks should serve as a wake-up call. The Muslim-Muslim ticket was not imposed on Christians by force. It was, in many ways, the greatest gift Christian Nigerians gave: a voluntary relinquishing of national political relevance, handed over on a platter of gold through ethnic voting patterns, tribal divisions, and a failure to prioritise collective interest at the highest level of power. One just has to consider the following to understand that indeed this was a gift that Christians in Nigeria gave: 1. A Christian, for whatever reasons went out and supported a Muslim-Muslim ticket, completely relinquishing your own interests on the national political stage and offering it as a free gift. 2. Christians failed to apply basic political sense: at the national level, representation matters. Even in the United States, tickets often reflect balance across key divides, Trump from New York paired with Vance from Ohio is one recent illustration of geographic and demographic considerations. Christians chose not to demand the same for themselves. 3. Christians, because of tribal or other narrow politics, still prepare to vote for another Muslim-Muslim arrangement, continuing the gift-giving. 4. Some Christians console themselves that they are represented because “the president’s wife is a Christian”, an idea that is so ridiculous, even Muslims use it as a joke now by saying "How can the president be an islamist when in the other room he has a Christian wife", A joke with such a strong punchline, Dave Chappelle would be proud. 5. Christians watch as extremists and armed groups linked to Islamist or Fulani militancy attack churches, kidnap worshippers, take Christian women and girls to the bush and do as they please with them, often with very little or no consequence and in some cases even rewarded with paid ransoms. The political leverage that might have compelled stronger protection was already given away. NOW ask yourself, should YOU be angry with these Islamic clerics or should you be mad at yourself for relinquishing power on a platter of gold? While one side openly campaigns for religious advantage, frames leadership in terms of religious benefit, and in some cases speaks of fighting or enslaving the other, the other side prioritises ethnic arithmetic and accepts symbolic representation, the imbalance is not accidental. Nigeria’s political tradition long favoured religious balancing in the highest offices precisely because the country is roughly evenly divided and deeply polarised along faith lines. Breaking that pattern has already produced dire consequences. Relying on symbolic gestures, ethnic arithmetic within Christian communities, or the private faith of a spouse does not substitute for institutional power. Security failures that disproportionately affect Christian communities in the Middle Belt and parts of the North further underscore the gap between numerical presence and effective protection or influence. Christians playing ethnic politics on a national stage while the other side plays religious politics is only going to end one way: abject failure. This is why Christians in the nation have continued and will continue to relinquish political power and relevance. Too much infighting. Too many tribal lines drawn inside the Nigerian Christian fold. Instead of outrage at being called “infidel,” or at clerics who say they prefer grass under Muslim rule or who speak of enslaving non-Muslims, we should be looking in the mirror at voting patterns, internal divisions, and the failure to translate population into consistent national leverage. How long have so-called powerful men of God convinced the flock from the pulpit to relinquish representation and collective interest while these same men load their bank accounts with enormous sums and go about their mornings “drinking tea with God”? The wiser reaction is to treat these statements as evidence that representation is never given; it is organised, defended, and exercised or it is lost.

Mrchippychappy:I can bet u are from the south east, one thing u people don't understand is that the south west don't see religion as a barrier, use the last osun election as a case study. Adeleke bears nurudeen n Jackson at the same time, he goes to church today n goes to mosque tomorrow, as if that isn't enough he has both christian n Muslim wife's so tell me how u wan use religion penetrate that one? Look at the same Tinubu u are talking about, he's a Muslim n his wife is a pastor at redeem church. Instead of writing this your useless epistle, just try to discredit Tinubu over another thing but u will fail woefully if u think u can use religion in the south west |

BATified2023:Any region who doesn't consider religion as it is now is a slow person. You can't hear a Muslim saying that he is ready to go hungry for a Muslim Muslim tickets and you a Christian says he is wise for pitching your tent with a Muslim Muslim tickets. |

The problem is not tribal identity or group betrayal as such Christianity in its ideal configuration is not a political religion. It's rather a religion of personal salvation and testimony. There is no part of the Christian text or the life of its central figure that makes political expansion or consideration a tenet of pursuit for the Christian. There's no group interest in Christianity that is commanded by Jesus which involves any form of political triumphalism That's the basic fact. Funny enough those advocating that we separate religion from politics are the Muslims. Yet they are the one who have no problem with someone using their religion to play politics. It's an Islamic issue and Christians don't need to react likewise after all, a bad tree cannot bear good fruit and you don't go low with those who choose to. |

BATified2023:What does that have to do with political representation on the national stage? This well curated manipulative tactics that was perfectly used on gullible Christians in other parts of the country who were so naïve to see the deception or blinded by tribal allegiance is slowly but surely being exposed, and you have your Islamic clerics and the president to thank for that. |

If the Christians do not vote Tinubu's muslim-muslim ticket in 2027, then I wonder where his votes will come from. The Muslims in the North have largely moved away from the ticket. All these sponsored Sheikhs are being commissioned by APC to give those controversial statements to make the Northern Muslims identify with the ticket, but it's an exercise in futility. The Christians should please vote for Tinubu's muslim-muslim ticket to bail him out. Hunger is a more potent unifier than any religious combination. |
