If Russia fires a nuclear missile into Ukraine, it'll harm Ukraine and Russia would prepare for the radiation fallout.

If Russia goes nuclear against Ukraine, the options are either to use material quantities that are not enough to give him a decisive victory, yet drawing the ire of the nuclear powers of the world. No sane leader will consider this a good option. Apart from the terroristic Iranian regime that considers the killing of its people martyrdom.

Another option will be to use significant nuclear weapons for the victory they need. But the cost will make such victory pyrrhic. You can't safely control the fallouts of a massive nuclear attack from such a proximity. Russian lives, community functionality and hence economy will be put at unacceptable risks.

If you consider these points you'll understand why Putin is very hesitant to push that button. It's not because he cares so much for the safety of the Ukrainians he's been killing for 4 years now.

Ukraine has learnt to survive by themselves. Ukraine is most likely becoming an arms exporter. Russia has managed to unite Ukraine so much now.

There is a likelihood of Russia falling into recession because they need to quickly rebuild their military assets. Putin should watch uis back because the Oligarchs behind him have lost so much financially that they wouldn't mind replacing him.
