What if it's your friend who did it and made it look like a scammer is responsible?
Anything is possible these days you know.

But how can you send such amount of money without first speaking to your friend or the recipient to ascertain if or why he/she needed the money?

Because in some banks, once you withdraw some huge sums of money from your own account twice or thrice, they will call attention to know if there is any problem. I can remember then in 2007, when I withdrew 500k twice in a day, they called me to say Oga what's happening? I just simply told the accounting officer that I had a building project going on.
Always look before you leap.

I tried too, when I called her, she picked and I was hearing background noises, Then I dropped the called, immediately she sent a text that' she's at the market and can't talk..

It was after she made the second request, I started suspecting her.

This can't happen with Opay. If the reciever account was Opay account it would've been frozen by now except he/ she return your 200k.

Good day everyone.

I am currently dealing with a very painful situation, and I need advice from people who have experience with fraud cases and fund recovery in Nigeria.

A close friend contacted me through WhatsApp asking me to help her with some funds. Because I knew the person, I believed it was genuinely her and agreed to help.

She sent me an account number to make the transfer, which I did from my PalmPay account. She later contacted me again and gave me another account number, asking me to send another amount.

At that point, I became suspicious and asked her to confirm that I was actually communicating with her. Instead of confirming, she started giving different excuses and avoiding the question.

That was when I realized that I might have been dealing with someone who had compromised or impersonated my friend's WhatsApp account, and that I had been scammed.

The total amount I lost was ₦200,000.

Immediately after realizing what had happened, I contacted OPay because the money was sent to an OPay account. I requested that the recipient's account be frozen/restricted, but OPay directed me to contact PalmPay since PalmPay was the sending institution.

I reported the matter to PalmPay and PalmPay subsequently informed me that they require a Police Report or Court Order before they can proceed with the case.

I am currently obtaining the Police Report and will upload it as requested.
Please, I need advice from anyone who has experienced something similar:

Has anyone successfully recovered money transferred to an OPay account belonging to a scammer?

After submitting the Police Report, how long does the recovery process normally take?

Is there anything else I should do to increase my chances of recovering the ₦200,000?

Should I also report the matter to the EFCC or the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre?

I have the transaction receipts, WhatsApp conversations, and other evidence relating to the incident.

Please, I would really appreciate practical advice from people who have gone through a similar situation, especially anyone who has successfully recovered their money.

Thank you.

Some people are not smart at all. How do you send such an amount to someone just because of ordinary WhatsApp chats? And to worsen the matter to an accohnt bearing another name different from what you know your friend to be? You then realised the need to confirm who you are dealing with.

This scammers have a way of putting you under pressure, they never come in calm way in most cases, they instill panic into your body system from there, you become distabilized, it takes God Grace for you not to fall victim.

This is where the uselessness of the country called Nigeria comes in. They would stress you and make you to lose more than the money you intend to recover. If it were in advance countries like the U.S, they would have gotten the criminal arrested without stressing you.
By the way, don't trust anyone. Your friend can scam you. But I'm not in anyway saying she is the scammer. My point is that, you shouldn't trust anyone.

Yes thats true, she gave the impression that she was in a market place and trying to pay for an agent there...

I feel so sad..

It was when she tried asking for another for reason that doesn't add up was when I realised she wasn't the one, then I asked her to show proof she was the one chatting with me then she started coming with all sorts of excuses
Sorry about the loss.

It is always good to double check when it comes to money transfers in this age and time.

Follow up with Moniepoint and the Police and the court perhaps the BVN linked to that Account will be flagged and at least put him or her out of business and also you don't have to scrub out the Account details for that Account. Let everyone see it.

Suckers really full this country o!

So, your supposed friend reached out to you out of the blue (on WhatsApp of all places) for 200K and you couldn't scrutinize such requests before sending the money?

Like someone rightly said; "No use this kind sense cross road o!".

Normal normal, I go analyze the chat, ask in details what she needs the money for. From there, I'll know if it's my friend or an impostor. Lastly, I won't even call the person's WhatsApp number but her real number. You wan whyne me?

Last year, someone hacked my friend's account and made similar request to me. From the way the scammer greeted me, I knew it wasn't my friend. The mugu said "Good afternoon Bro!". My friend wey be sey if him chat me up, him first word na insult. He'll either say "Mad man", "Bastard" or "Baba Werey!". I just wasted the scammer's time before advising him to find something meaningful to do with his life.

Sometimes, a little diligence helps. Make una no dey make those scammers feel like sey dem too get sense nau.

Dear OP, sorry for your loss. But this one is on you!
