In a dramatic fall from grace that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s high society, prominent Lagos socialite and businesswoman, Mrs. Funmilola Arike Ogbuaya, widely known as “Ariket,” has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for her role in running a high-profile narcotics trafficking ring.

The conviction, handed down by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, brings an abrupt end to years of court battles and exposes the illicit underbelly of an empire built on international drug smuggling and money laundering.

From High-Society Glamour to Maximum Security

The conviction comes just days after Ogbuaya hosted a lavish 60th birthday celebration in Lagos, attended by elite socialites, business associates, and political figures.

Known for her extravagant lifestyle and visible presence in the event and real estate sectors, the owner of D Square Event Centre and Zu-Ket Homes was convicted following a multi-year trial prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Presiding over the matter, the court sentenced Ogbuaya on multiple counts of conspiracy, unlawful possession, procurement, and aiding and abetting the trafficking of hard drugs, ordering that the prison terms run concurrently.

The 2017 Airport Bust and Courier Confession
The unraveling of Ogbuaya’s narcotics empire traces back to February 2017 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos. NDLEA operatives intercepted her drug courier, Odeyemi Omolara (also known as Ariyo Monsurat Olabisi), as she attempted to board a flight bound for Saudi Arabia.

A thorough search of Omolara’s luggage revealed 1.595 kilogrammes of pure cocaine concealed in flatly packed nylon compartments. Upon discovery, an arresting NDLEA officer testified that the courier broke down at the airport, weeping and declaring, “Ariket has killed me; Ariket has finished me”.

Omolara subsequently confessed during interrogation that Ogbuaya was the mastermind who procured and handed her the narcotics for exportation. Omolara was earlier convicted and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for her role in the crime.

Billions in Assets Uncovered Across Three States

Following Ogbuaya’s arrest and subsequent trial, financial intelligence officers with the NDLEA launched an extensive tracing of her financial footprint and acquisition channels. Investigations uncovered real estate properties, event centers, and commercial plots valued at billions of Naira strategically distributed across Lagos, Ogun, and Osun states.

Anti-narcotics agency sources confirm that civil forfeiture proceedings have been initiated to ensure all landed properties, luxury facilities, and bank balances linked to the drug network are permanently forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Background and Legal Proceedings.

Ogbuaya’s prosecution spanned nearly nine years, marked by intricate legal maneuvers, re-arraignments, and appeals. First arraigned in 2017 alongside Omolara before Justice Hadizat Rabiu-Shagari, the case suffered delays before being re-arraigned before Justice Deinde Dipeolu at the Federal High Court.

Throughout her trials, Ogbuaya—who also operated under aliases such as Funmilola Ogundipe—maintained her innocence while attempting to quash charges via no-case submissions. However, meticulous evidence presented by the NDLEA prosecution team, including testimony from arresting officers, forensic drug tests, and the co-conspirator’s detailed statements, proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ogbuaya ran the syndicate.

The sentencing serves as one of the most severe convictions handed down to a high-society figure in recent Nigerian history, underscoring the NDLEA’s intensified crackdown on major drug kingpins operating under the guise of legitimate business enterprise.

Most of these so-called billionaires push hard drugs.

...that's if it's not fraud.

Very little worked for it and they don't come online shouting "money na water." Money can never be water if you worked for it.

One full day in prision terminology isnt the same as one full day in the outside world.

So 45 years isn't actually 45 years.
Re: From Lavish 60th Birthday To Maximum Security: The Story Of Ariket by SixSeven:
Our problem is that we like to celebrate nonsense. And by nonsense I mean, we celebrate material things, things that don't have value, no worth but only craving validation because it is not authentic.

The elders used to say that a man who does not know where the rain began to beat him cannot know where he dried his body. Today, we no longer look at a man’s character, we only look at the size of his harvest, even if he stole the yams. We have turned our backs on the quiet truth of our ancestors to dance to the loud drums of foolish men. Of course, when a society begins to crown jesters and mock the honest farmer, the roof is already falling on the house. That's why they once said when a thief tells you to gotocourt, his brother is the judge. It means the system is fixed, and a dishonest person is only acting bold because they control or have an unfair advantage in the system meant to judge them. They control the system, they are the king of boys

If we crush the seed of integrity just to celebrate the chaff, what will our children eat when the famine of character arrives? Na there we de so. Ajekun iya ti e je ehn, Davido and SDM never got sing am well yet.

Why not call her Ariket Luxury since all of them started from luxury but ended in prison.
With her efforts to escape jail her children and well wishers that get connection will be pressing for a presidential pardon.
I won't be surprised if Tinubu approve that

95 percent of the so called celebrities being worship by Nigerians are either into drug pushing or fraud.
Until their secrets are exposed, they will continue to be saints before people.

Omo I like how this tribe dey run their own, very low-key. My only grudge na how all of them dey rush buy property for Lagos even when dem come from Ondo and Ogun, unlike the other tribe when dey build mansions for Abiriba and environs.

A while 9 years it took before she was sentenced. Will she even spend one day behind bars?
When common Bo. Risky claimed he was not in the prison, but was in a furnished apartment while he was supposed to be in prison.

Hmmm undecided

She thought that she was bigger than the law. If she had worked the case and pled guilty this thing wouldn't have seen the light of day, maybe getting off with some kind of fine option, but as they say, pride goes before a fall. They wanted to make an example out of her.

I can't explain but there is this strong relationship between fraud money / ill gotten wealth and showoff

Because the logical thing to do when your wealth isn't legitimate is to hide but these days people do the reverse

Don't tell me they are trying to wash the money cos that's not how to launder money at all. You can wash dirty money without being in the public eye

Disclaimer : my opinion above is not in any way supporting fraud
