'I have been sick since last year': Veteran actor Baba Opegbe opens up about his health struggles (Watch)

Nollywood actor Kunle Afod has paid an emotional visit to veteran Yoruba actor Yomi King, popularly known as Baba Opebe, following concerns from fans who had been unable to reach him.

Afod shared a video of the visit on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, revealing that he decided to locate the veteran actor after several people contacted him over their inability to reach Baba Opebe.

According to Afod, the actor’s phone had stopped connecting, leaving many people worried about his whereabouts.

The journey to Baba Opebe’s residence was reportedly challenging, with Afod describing the location as extremely remote.

During the visit, Baba Opebe addressed speculation surrounding his prolonged absence from the public, revealing that he had been battling ill health since last year.

“I have been sick since last year. The doctor said I have low blood in my system. I was given four pints of blood. Some people said I went into hiding because I do not want people to know about my condition. My children are taking care of me,” he said.

The veteran actor disclosed that he had visited several hospitals over the past year while receiving treatment for his condition.

He also expressed appreciation to fellow Nollywood actor Mr Latin for checking on him and providing support during his health challenges.

Afod, who appeared visibly emotional during the visit, donated ₦100,000 to Baba Opebe and appealed to Nigerians to support the veteran actor financially, medically and spiritually.

Baba Opebe, the popular stage name of Yomi King, is a veteran Nigerian comic actor known for his roles in classic Yoruba Nollywood productions.

He reportedly rose to prominence after training under the late veteran actor Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, and featuring in the 1987 television show Erinkeke.

Reactions to Baba Opebe's health condition;

Tunde Ogundare commented; “Haaaas, wai, all actors and actress need special orioke prayer, sorry o.”

Abidemi Idowu shared; “I wish for every sick a safe recovery, divine healing.”

Olatunji Yusuf Abefe shared; “But make god sha forgive me sha why all actors and actress dey sick like this.”

Ace Man noted; “Kunle Afod should enlighten his colleagues about the importance of having a health insurance instead of always coming to seek public support .”

Sharara Skinmar reacted; “haaa waiting dey sup like this again we dey pray for one see another one again i pray quick recovery oo insha Allah🙏🙏.”

As one person said up there in the comments:

Get yourself a health insurance plan.

Insurance is the best form of protection you can give yourself when the going is good, so you don't become a burden on your own children, or in many of these cases, on the public.

If you start early, the premiums are usually low. And yeah, Health Insurance works in Nigeria - so even you can start today.

Acting is kinda like freelance work. Nollywood is not an organization.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria, if they had forward thinking leaders could have set up this initiative of Compulsory retirement savings or health insurance. But nope, they're not.

LOL. Honestly this question is funny. If govt doesn't provide pension scheme for them, they should wise enough to open one for themselves. No be everything they need to tell anyone making money in their young age.

Don't be like that. Humanity demands we look out for each other. If you can help someone with a genuine need, please do. Your material possessions are not for you only.

Kunle Afod dey try sha. Dude is a titan. If not for him, many Yoruba Nollywood veterans would have been forgotten. I watched the episode where he visited Kola Oyewo when he was sick and Baba Peter Fatomilola. I remember he visited Kola Oyewo repeatedly. He even gave him One million naira on his last birthday before he died. He no dey forget the oldies of the industry.

Like Patoranking sang "Celebrate me now wey i dey alive", na when these people still dey Kunle dey check on them and help them financially. God bless him.

As a man,if you're not learning a lesson from all these old Nollywood legends, you're not wise.

Majority of them have failed or failing health...Why? Because no health insurance.

Health insurance is key...Most people don't take their health serious.

I'll try and send the man something.

God will heal you Opebe, awo baba Suwe., atu owe of Nigeria. The truth is politicians don't care about anyone, reason we need to use our brain, when supporting. Give to Kunle Afod, I have watched how he has been visiting old and sick actors. That of Late Oyewo, really moved me. He also visited that one the children of Ray Eyiwumi from Aran-Orin in Ikorodu. I encourage our actors to invest too. grin grin grin

That health insurance is somewhat of a scam. Those guys will be telling certain treatment is not cover when you have problem especially if the issue is something require special care.

The CEO of one of biggest healthcare insurance in US was unalive last year because of these cheatings. In Nigeria they will have free reign to milk people dry without any legal protection.
