“Content Creator With No Intellect!” — African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has taken a fresh swipe at billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu following a viral exchange between Elumelu and a young Gen Z lady.

The controversy erupted after the lady addressed the billionaire simply as “Tony,” prompting Elumelu to correct her and insist: “Call me Mr Elumelu or TOE.”

Sowore, reacting to the moment, questioned the difference between being called “Tony” and “TOE,” describing the controversy as “much ado about nothing” and branding Elumelu a “content creator with little or no intellect.”

But the debate has gone beyond Sowore’s criticism, with Nigerians divided over respect, workplace culture, age, status and whether the young woman crossed a line by using Elumelu’s first name. Another viral clip showing Elumelu being addressed as “Tony” during a television interview has further fueled the controversy.

Was the Gen Z lady disrespectful, or did Tony Elumelu overreact?

Tony overreacted. And worse, showed his nature thinking he is above others, which he is in this instant, but doesn't need to brand about

My own bias must however be noted, I can call King Charles, Charlie, and he wouldn't complain despite being more than a decade older than me and wearing a crown.

This is indeed, Africa. She more appropriately should have called him Mr Elumelu. And he is correct to have corrected her. And people will form opinions about the incident like Sowore and us are doing, and "the debate has gone beyond Sowore’s criticism, with Nigerians divided over respect, workplace culture, age, status and whether the young woman crossed a line by using Elumelu’s first name."

A prime minister might be diplomatic

You may call him Tony, he might decide to hear you or not. He might speak with you or not

There is a difference between calling him Tony and speaking with him on first name terms

It was actually in a similar situation where Tony was being asked questions and many called him Tony. And I actually think it was planned to be so since many asking questions read them from the same sort of card which made me wonder the organisers had helped edit since they were all pre-chosen. That makes it not exactly similar, and as you said, "this is Africa".

How did Mr Elumelu show "his nature thinking he is above others"?

Felt he handled it calmly enough

In my experience, there are some elderly white guys - even older than my dad - who INSIST on me addressing them by first name.

With no "Sir". No "Mr"

But those are of a different culture.

Based on my African culture, my mouth dey heavy me even as I do that sef...

Much ado over nothing! The girl called him by his first name, and he corrected her politely. The truth is, even though I am a 'first name' calling advocate, I was surprised she called him Tony given that they were in a professional environment.

I think she must have watched his previous interactions and heard people call him by his first name. So she thought it was okay to call him Tony.

You would suspended her if you couldhuh So what if with all those noises TOE decides to employ her and even get to know her much more.

Take it easy life is not that difficult…it is a corporate world and what she did is no disrespect
Elumelu corrected her doesn’t mean he is angry as you are right now.

Elumelu is an elder statesman & huge stakeholder in Nigeria
He is also above 60
Does she call her father by his name
We are West Africans please
Discernement is key, the age gap & wealth of experience should be respected

A graduate trainee in the midst of other graduate trainees in a general interaction with the Group Chairman, and the said trainee proceeding to address the Chairman by his first name in Nigeria is a big no no. You need to realize that calling someone by first name is indicative of a level of familiarity, or social capital.

Tony Elumelu is the Group Chairman and the apex of the bank's power structure. In corporate Nigeria, title and rank are well respected. Furthermore, he is not a young man like Mike Zuckerberg that you can take the liberty of addressing by first name.

Even in Western cultures, there is a "First Meeting" rule and using a first name requires implicit permission. Since this was their first formal interaction, the graduate trainee did not have the social capital to assume familiarity.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that this is a general and recorded meeting with over 4,000 graduate trainees, who can get the wrong impression on how to address their Group Chairman. The ideal thing for the young woman to have done was to address Tony simply as "Sir" and not even "Mr. Elumelu".

There is a big difference between Fiction and reality.
The only people that can call King Charles "Charlie or Charles" face to face are his close friends or some family members.

This is my issue with this sowore omoyele AKA "Arindin". He derives pleasure in calling people names and when Davido gave him the same dose of his medication, he cannot take it. He cannot sleep for 3 days for being called "Arindin". He went haywire. He was busy pushing write-ups against Davido.

How can someone in his right senses called Tony Elumelu a content creator. Globally, Tony Elumelu is known as a successful banker. One billion Arindin cannot change it. Must be the Arindin cum Oponu comment on every issues if he is not using it to create content ? Tony Elumelu we know his business, how is yele making his money if not content creation ?
