My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by 2Minuteswoman(op): 12:12pm On Aug 20
Honestly, I wasn’t even prepared for this bird wahala on my Ofada rice farm.

The birds dealt with my farm seriously. I got there yesterday and was extremely down that I couldn’t even sleep at night. Imagine 9 acres!

I think the issue was that they had already sucked out the “milk” before the rice could properly form. Maybe the person I employed didn’t really have enough experience with Ofada farming.

When the Hausa guys came on Wednesday, they said some of the rice that had already been eaten by the birds was not worth harvesting. Omo, it really pained me.

Apart from catapult and making noise, are there other effective ways of scaring birds away? I was told scarecrows don’t really work because the birds get used to them. The farmers around there also rely mainly on catapults and employing more hands.

Anyone with experience in rice farming, especially Ofada, please advise me on what else I can do next

I am looking into doing about 7 acres on my farm but I got the warning early about bird, a guy was doing 4 acres on the land before I bought it was hoping to pick his brains on how he done it but he left after his last harvest.

Get a scarecrow and or a drone.
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by stan4b(m): 11:57am On Aug 21
Have you tried scarecrows??
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by illicit(m): 11:58am On Aug 21
Cover it with net

Yeah

The whole farm...
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by Eleph(m): 12:00pm On Aug 21
This is serious. I think you'll have to seek knowledge from those that have real time experience of the business for you to really succeed. Drones are not easy to come by, neither are they cheap to operate going by the size of the farm.

Na to stop farming rice ooo
Ur location is prone to birds.....
I have been to various states that farm rice heavily
Benue..Nasarawa etc
They hardly complain about birds....
Sincerely ..you should have done a pilot run of an acre
B/4 doing 9 acres..thats massive
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by 36STATES: 12:06pm On Aug 21
Where is the picture of your Ofada rice farm?
I have driven around that town and found no single rice farm! I have a property in Obafemi Owede and I have been to that area many times and have seen no plot of land with rice. Yorubas want us to refer every local rice in Nigeria now as Ofada rice even though there is no reasonable rice farming going on there.
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by SirCloudControl: 12:16pm On Aug 21
Infra red Lazer beams for the birds
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by adisabarber(m): 12:17pm On Aug 21
Most likely Quela birds. You need to make scarecrows and hang old compact disks around your farm so the flash when reflecting sunlight.

Also, you might need to hire people to monitor the farm when the rice is at the formative stage.

Have seen someone that net his 6 acres of rice farm. Try to net your farm and see how all this will stop. Those Hauska can gather net and saw for you.
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by untoldtruth: 1:09pm On Aug 21
Ah sorry o, we buy old net and sew it and hang it on stakes we put out throughout the farm, if your farm is very big, wahala has cometh be that, but once it's done, it's done, just monitoring for damages now and again
Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by Great9japikin: 2:12pm On Aug 21

yes am a big time rice farmer in Abuja, and I use net, sizes, the net must be one finger net, that is the gaps in the nets are small, cover it with those nets immediately you start seeing one or two producing, the birds can penatrate the two or three finger net, so use one finger. The birds are mostly of two types, first one very small black birds with stripes white on their throats, those one suck the water in the rice before Maturity and then the yellow birds that move in thousand, those ones invade the rice after maturity and finish it off. Use net ASAP.

There are some solar noise producing devices that produce different kinds of noise and keep changing the sounds from dog bark to sirens to other predators sound that will scare the birds away.

Yeah

The whole farm...
As impossible as that may seem, that is the solution.

One thing I like about white people is that they have this nothing is impossible mindset.

There's one gardner I follow on YouTube, she covered her strawberry plants with some kind of wire net because, according to her, she didn't want to lose her harvest to birds.

Those yellow birds dealt with my maize farm.

Very possible

In China and Thailand, no matter the size of the farm, they cover it with net

Unfortunately, we see that as "too much work" or extra cost, but anything to preserve one's harvest is worth it.

Re: My Rice Farm And Birds WAHALA by sultaan(m): 8:07am On Aug 22
a bad idea I have is to plant half acre after harvesting and when the grains start to emerge for them to eat, poison everything with something that will kill them when they get home so the feed their chick(same way you handle roaches)

Because you plant so little food they will surge to feed because your last field boosted their population.

You can then follow the stench to their home and finish them up with a different type of poison and that will give you an egdge next planting season and you also know where they live.
