Inspirer1:The problem is that the costs of running the refinery can rise at any time t. Also, government revenues, before looting, have been scanty. Half of our budget is borrowed, tax forms 20% of funding for our budget. At some point, the N500 would have to go up. He can also choose to sell crude cheaper to Dangote Refinery or any other Nigerian owned Refinery at a cheaper rate than that of International cost price at an agreement that they sell cheaper to Nigeria.Hahahaha...no. 1. Dangote buys crude also from abroad. Government cannot set the price of foreign crude. 2. Also, crude sales to dangote refinery yield revenue...part of which goes to...government (some part goes to the local communities for development). Cutting the cost of crude to make it cheaper would be government sabotaging the means of paying dangote for the same subsidy you want. That means more borrowing eventually. 3. Unlike Iran, components for refineries are made abroad, which means their maintenance is more expensive. Hence the need for dangote to make a profit. 4. Also, dangote needs more investment . A lot more investment. That comes only when fuel is sold at market price. As a matter of fact, I expected the present FG to do this same thing, subsidize directly from the Refinery. It is 47-50 million liters per day Furthermore, trackers can be installed on all petrol tankers lifting from Dangote Refinery to monitor movement and delivery to various petrol stations etc.Doing that is going to cost a whole lot of money, which your government, even if we stopped looting , does not have A better way would be for government to build a pipeline system that connects dangote refinery to fuel depots naitionwide...that would reduce transport costs of fuels. It may help to make fuel cheaper. |

Dancebreaker:SO government should go into more debt providing everything free for you guys? The problem is, even if government stops looting, we do not earn enough money as a nation. Also price controls drives away a lot of much needed investment You can hate me, but you cannot have a subsidy without getting into more debt. Unless you want to pay more in tax. |

Rutherinspace:You said nothing meaningful to counter his opinion Who told you that Tinubu alone knows better than everyone else? If fuel is subsidized at say N450 won't you benefit? How has the removal of fuel subsidy benefitted you and your family How has your state getting more allocation benefitted people in your village? Tinubu should kill corruption in the subsidy regime and not kill subsidy itself. Don't throw away the baby with the bath water! |

zbigniew:Complete opposition to Rotus is also too simplistic. Rotus may have been plainly wrong on the definition of Eurobonds, but that does not automatically make every argument for subsidy removal reversal wrong. The real issue is more complex as subsidy reform must be weighed against its social costs, while the PIA and private refining create an additional problem that an indefinitely subsidised fuel price can restrict refinery margins and discourage investment unless the compensation mechanism is credible and sustainable. The debate should be about the best policy design, not treating either side as wholly right or wrong. |

But I do pity the millions who may perish. I know how many are already groaning and seeking help. People who were doing fairly well a few years ago. Do enjoy the high prices and inflation. All the best. |

givedemwotowoto:Before I delve into more intricate aspect of this discussion, I will like to ask, what do you have against subsidy in a country like Nigeria where Labour is severely underpaid? Before answering, bear in mind that even the most civilised countries of the world still have a place for subsidies in their economies. Now, the reason I for one wholeheartedly support the return of subsidy is that removal of it will never truly bring about the desired positive impact. They will just keep making excuses upon excuses for the next 10 20years. Anyone who knows how rotten the Nigerian political economy is, will know that Nigeria is not a serious country in terms of development and industrialisation. You have a country that is ignoring other arguably more important factors of development like security, electricity, welfare of the armed forces etc and there's facing only roads. As if we don't know that road projects are the easiest way to syphon monies from govt purse, which is the reason they pay attention only to road constructions. The benefit of subsidy removal can only be development and infrastructural upgrade, but Nigerian govt are not sincere about that project, They are just stealing so they should bring back subsidy. By the way, the funds available pre subsidy removal was still enough to fund developmental projects if they were ever serious about it. A country with thieving problem like Nigeria cannot promise you development in exchange for subsidy removal and you will believe them. That will be the heights of naivety. |

Streetinvestor2:The problem with your defence of Atiku VOODOO economics is that Atiku has now clarified his own proposal—and it is NOT what you are describing. Atiku’s team NOW says the subsidy will “move subsidy from importation to production” !! and that qualifying Nigerian refineries, public and private, will receive crude at preferential prices , tied to verified domestic production and lower consumer prices. In other words, Dangote and other refineries are directly inside the subsidy mechanism. So saying, “Atiku did not say he would subsidise Dangote” is simply outdated. The have made another u-turn! And there is another problem. The PIA says wholesale and retail petroleum prices should be based on unrestricted free-market pricing conditions, while wholesale transactions are supposed to be negotiated transparently on an arm’s-length basis. So the questions remain: * What exactly is the preferential crude price? * How much below market price will Dangote receive crude? * Who pays that difference? * What volume qualifies? * How is “verified Nigerian consumption” determined? * What happens when crude prices rise? * What happens when the naira weakens? * How do you stop cheaper Nigerian petrol from being diverted or smuggled? * How does this preferential pricing sit with the PIA’s free-market framework? And “just checkmate corruption and smuggling” is not a mechanism. That is like saying: “Just stop armed robbery.” This latest Atiku's subsidy rigmarole idea is even more nonsensical than the one of YESTERDAY, The moment identical petrol has two economic values—one subsidised for Nigerian consumption and another reflecting commercial/export value—you create an arbitrage opportunity. The bigger the price gap, the bigger the incentive to divert it. The really ironic part is this:You say it is “not rocket science.” Exactly. Then Atiku should have no difficulty telling Nigerians one elementary number: WHAT IS THE BENCHMARK PRICE? CONFUSED and DESPERATE Atiku has announced the destination without showing Nigerians the vehicle, the route—or the fare. |

Some people criticizing this policy in this thread likely benefited from the old fuel smuggling rackets, which the subsidy removal effectively destroyed. The data shows that the country is financially better off without the subsidy burden, so there should be no debate about it at this stage. Atiku is simply trying to score cheap political points by aligning with populist sentiments. |

This is an idealistic proposal, but Nigeria has moved beyond subsidising petroleum products. With several private refineries coming on stream, including the operational Dangote Refinery, how exactly would the government subsidise privately refined petroleum products? The proposal is neither practical nor sustainable. Atiku is either pandering to the electorate ahead of the election or appealing to the gallery, because he knows very well that bringing back fuel subsidy is not a realistic option. Anything to the contrary is simply self-deception. |

SixSeven:Do you live in a cave? Iran-us war has impacted pump price virtually in all countries. Nigeria having 20 owned refineries will not fix this except it wants to sell below pump price, which now means subsidy of oil. In fact if Nigeria runs a refinery and not privately managed, it will become moribund in a short while and a conduit for average corrupt Nigerian managers and cost of production will be higher than comparative refineries. |

CharlesCNG:You just wrote ur usual lengthy trash Subsidy happens in different ways. Atiku only said he will adopt a template of selling a particular quentity of crude to refineries in Nigerian at low cost so that the refined products will land at domestic consumers at low cost. The major thing is to determine the actual consumption in nigeria to equity the crude for it and police the borders for bad elements not to take it out.Did he say he will sell the whole 1.7 million barrels we are producing to refineries at low price How is is rocket science to achieve. This is how u claimed tertiary education can not be Subsidised when many other countries are doing it In the past was thr no time we allocated a particular crude quantity for Nigerians purposes. Why won't it be cheaper now that we don't need to pay the cost associated with taking the crude outside and bringing back refined products. You drug baron and his few partners are the only ones benefiting from the removal which was not what we asked for then. Why are we not seeing the cng mass transit they promised everywhere after 3 yrs Even the NELFUND they claimed it was being funded from it is lie. They are now after unclaimed dividend from investors when the money is suppose to be returned to the companies. They took 70% of banks dollar gain sometimes ago. The quentity of domestic fuel they claim we consum is fraud. When Dangote started his refinery we didn't consumer that much .it was in the range of 30million liters only |
| Re: Rotus Oddiri Of Arise TV Shows What Will Happen When Fuel Subsidy Is Restored by Streetinvestor2: 6:37pm On Aug 21*. Modified: 6:53pm On Aug 21 |
nairalanda1:You post is based on assumptions. When Dangote Refinery came on board and was doing like 50% capacity. Nigerian was consuming like 30 million litters This other figures are just bloated. And it is left for Atiku to decide what percentage of subsidy he was going to implement. He didn't tell you he will seel the fuel at #200.He can decide to do 50% or any percentage when true cost is determined Can you in all honesty tell me the benefit of the removal now to 79% of Nigerians who fall into poverty and hunger bracket. Policies are made for the living and not dead They say they are removing subsidy for power next yr.They have removed for education and health services. So what is left for the low and middle class Nigerians They almost removed it for waec which I know will definitely happen again. The have increased tax which effect will happen middle next yr if they are allowed back Let it come back because this government defeated the aim for it |
| Re: Rotus Oddiri Of Arise TV Shows What Will Happen When Fuel Subsidy Is Restored by nairalanda1(m): 6:43pm On Aug 21 |
Streetinvestor2:It sounds ideal in theory...but the problem is 1. Government is dependent on crude sales for revenue. Yes, including crude sold domestically. If government makes crude cheaper for sale to dangote with the hope that it would reduce fuel prices, it is essentially also cheating itself out of revenue...which means more borrowing to make up for it. 2. Oil drilling is an expensive proposition, made all the more expensive that we do not make oil rigs here in Nigeria from scratch. No one who drills for oil is going to sell oil to government at lower prices. 3. Debt , plus years of low oil prices, and so forth, means that our budget cannot handle compensating for the reduction in crude oil prices. E get problem o. How is is rocket science to achieve. This is how u claimed tertiary education can not be Subsidised when many other countries are doing it.The only countries that do subsides have two things in common. They produce more crude than Nigeria, and they have populations that are not up to even one fifth of Nigeria. Iran that does limited subsides, also has something we don't have...a domestic industry that produces refineries from scratch. That helps with cost refuction. Nigeria cannot do subsidy on our revenue from oil, because there are too many of us, and the oil revenue is too low for it. (Yes, a good reason to vote out APC is because they do nothing about corruption...the fact is the stealing is taking from a treasury that already has scanty money). Was thr no time we allocated a particular crude quantity for Nigerians purposes. Why won't it be cheaper now that we don't need to pay the cost associated with taking the crude outside and bringing back refined products. That only accounted for a minority of subsidy costs then. Again, drilling for oil is expensive. You drug baron and his few partners are the only ones benefiting from the removal which was not what we asked for then.Irrelevant, and anyway, that is why we got to vote them out. Why are we not seeing the cng mass transit they promised everywhere after 3 yrsLOL...everyone knew that it was not going to be done instantly. If you thought so, sorry for you. I was laughing when government was talking about CNG...that we don't even have a proper gas system to supply it self. And anyway, it won't reduce costs much. Even the NELFUND they claimed it was being funded from it is lie.NELFUND is being funded from the budget, tho. They are now after unclaimed dividend from investors when the money is suppose to be returned to the companies. The took 70% of banks dollar gain sometimes agoYeah, like what did you expect in a country where over 60% of the population don't pay income tax to the government at federal and state level, including most of the rich? TO reduce borrowing money must be raised. . The quentity of domestic fuel they claim we consum is fraud. When Dangote started his refinery we did consumer that much .it was in the range of 30millionERM...that is not true. Before dangote, consumption was between 66-74 million , may be as high as 99 million. Once dangote came on stream, production fell to 47-50 million liters a day. Plus 30 million is not enough for a fuel dependent country like Nigeria...with 230 million people and counting. |
| Re: Rotus Oddiri Of Arise TV Shows What Will Happen When Fuel Subsidy Is Restored by nairalanda1(m): 6:51pm On Aug 21 |
Streetinvestor2:No it isn't. Remember we are and still are importing fuel. Also, remember that we have six other refineries too. Also, figures that are available put it at 47.5 million liters per day. If ya think it is bloated, you are being funny. For a nation of 230 million people, that's about enough This other figures are just bloated. And it is left for Atiku to decide what percentage of subsidy he was going to implement. He didn't tell you he will seel the fuel at #200.He can decide to do 50% or any percentage when true cost is determinedOga, the problem is ultimately government cannot determine running, production and crude oil costs as well as transport costs. Trying to do that for five decades cost us 4 refineries because of the resultant massive losses, and also promoted corruption therein. Would you let government set your prices if you were running any business? For someone who calls himself streetinvestor, you want government to be doing price setting for businesses. Can you in all honesty tell me the benefit of the 79% of Nigerians who fall into poverty and hunger bracket is benefiting from the removal even as I supported it initially. And the reasons why is simple. Nigeria has refused to make the right decisions to get off oil, and to become a diversifed nation See what china andother nations who were behind us in the 1960s did. And Nigerians were massively poor under subsidy too, so wetin we dey talk? Policies are made for the living and not deadOkay, so you want the living to be buying fuel cheap, and collecting debt as government borrows more to replace the money used for subsidy ? OK o. And you people won't pay tax to fund it like they do in saner climes. Instead you dey think we be like Saudi.LOL. They say they are removing subsidy for power next yr.They have removed for education and health services. So what is left for the low and middle class Nigerians1. Yes, subsidy for power needs to go so that the power sector gets investment to grow. This is something that was said for years before tinubu thought of Aso rock. 2. Subsidy is still on education abeg. Otherwise, government university go dey charge 6million naira per session in fees. Health too...if you go to a government hospital, your healthcare is subsidsied, otherwise, common cesarean go cost you something like 25 million naira to do. And if you are on NHIS AND Phis, YOUR care is subsidised in a way...you even get some services free self. |
