Jennifer’s parents were at the Bauchi State Police Headquarters on Friday after they were invited to appear before the Commissioner of Police over the matter.

The ongoing controversy surrounding 16-year-old Jennifer, whose parents travelled from Adamawa State to Bauchi to take her home, took a fresh twist on Friday after representatives of a Da’awah group reportedly opposed a directive by the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police for the teenager to be released to her parents.

Jennifer’s parents were at the Bauchi State Police Headquarters on Friday after they were invited to appear before the Commissioner of Police over the matter.

According to an account of the meeting made available to SaharaReporters, the Commissioner reviewed the case and directed that Jennifer should be released to her parents, who were present and had indicated their willingness to take responsibility for their daughter.

The CP reportedly directed an Assistant Commissioner of Police to take the necessary steps to implement the decision.

However, the proposed release was halted after representatives of the Da’awah group objected to Jennifer being handed over to her parents.

The group reportedly expressed concern for the teenager’s safety and urged the police to take the matter before a court instead of releasing her to her family.

Following the disagreement, the police reportedly decided to move Jennifer temporarily to the Bauchi State Agency for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (BASOVCA), where she is expected to remain pending a further review of the matter on Monday.

The development has left Jennifer’s parents facing further uncertainty after travelling from Adamawa State to Bauchi specifically to take their daughter home.

“We travelled from Adamawa to Bauchi because we were called and because we wanted to take responsibility for our daughter,” one of Jennifer’s parents said.

They are also worried about their other children who have remained at home while both parents stay in Bauchi to pursue the matter.

The parents are appealing to the Commissioner of Police and other authorities to reconsider their situation and allow them to return home with Jennifer, arguing that they should be given an opportunity to exercise their parental responsibilities in accordance with the law.

“We are appealing for a peaceful and lawful resolution. Our other children are at home waiting for us,” the parents said.

Background to the Jennifer Case

Public concern has grown after Jennifer, a 16-year-old from Adamawa State, became the focus of a dispute involving her parents and individuals linked to an Islamic Da’awah group in Bauchi.

Earlier, SaharaReporters published a viral video in which Jennifer’s mother, Saratu Daniel, pleaded with authorities to help recover her daughter. In the video, the visibly distressed mother identified herself and appealed for intervention, stressing that she had raised Jennifer and wanted her returned.

Saratu alleged that Jennifer was taken from a Christian rehabilitation centre in Bauchi and handed over to a group of Islamic preachers known as the Da’awah group.

She claimed Jennifer had first been introduced to Islam during a family visit two months earlier, and after learning of her alleged conversion, Saratu took her to the Bishara Dole Christian rehabilitation centre for support.

However, she alleged that a man named Abubakar, who had posed as a Christian convert at the centre, later removed Jennifer and delivered her to the Da’awa group without family consent.

Saratu said she reported the matter to the Bauchi State Police Command, but despite assurances that Jennifer would be returned to her family, the teenager was allegedly handed back to the Da’awah group.

Both Saratu and Jennifer’s father, Joseph, who has been divorced from Saratu for nine years, insist their daughter should be returned home and allowed to continue practising the Christian faith, stressing that she is still a minor.

Reverend Mohammed Mohammed of the Bishara Dole Ministry confirmed the incident and called for an independent investigation. He also alleged that an Islamic preacher, Adam Ashaka, circulated a video accusing the centre of child molestation, which he described as a smear campaign aimed at discrediting the ministry and justifying Jennifer’s retention by the Da’awah group.

Mohammed urged authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry.

The controversy sparked calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances of Jennifer’s custody and her alleged conversion.

Parents Demand Due Process

The latest developments have shifted attention to how the custody of a 16-year-old should be handled amid competing claims from her parents and other parties.

Jennifer’s parents are urging the police, BASOVCA, child-protection agencies, and other relevant institutions to prioritize her welfare above all else.

They also appealed for restraint, warning against actions that could escalate the dispute into confrontation between the parties involved.

“We are asking for calm, transparency and due process. We want our daughter and our family to be protected,” they said.

Can you imagine the audacity? What kind of religion allows you to enter and any attempt to exit is life and death.

The parents of the child want her back home. A group of radicalists, who have their own children in their homes, deliberately oppose it and insist that she must continue with the religion by force. Did the parents go to court to give birth to her? Did the radicalists go to court to have their own children?

How can the world be suffering so much from this religion? It’s tension all round the clock daily everywhere they are.

And this is just an iceberg, there's more to it currently going in Bauchi
