A video making rounds online shows a Nigerian man reacting in disbelief as workers carefully clean phones, apply fresh stickers, wrap accessories and seal them into brand-new boxes.

According to the man who shared the video, the phones are not only shipped to Nigeria but also to other countries, particularly across Africa, where they can eventually be sold as brand-new devices.

What buyers receive looks perfect — sealed packaging, clean accessories and that exciting “new phone” feel. Many people spend hundreds of thousands, sometimes over a million naira, celebrating their purchase. They unbox the phones with pure happiness, take photos, update their status and proudly show off what they believe is a factory-fresh device.

But the reality shown in the video is less glamorous.

The phones appear to have already been used or refurbished before being carefully repackaged to look new. Workers are seen cleaning the devices, applying fresh stickers, arranging accessories and placing them inside what appears to be new packaging.

Interestingly, the man explained that even the phone he had gone there to buy would be repackaged in exactly the same manner before being sent out.

Laughing, he remarked in Pidgin English: “Since na wetin we want for Nigeria be that, make we just dey deceive ourselves dey go.”

The comment highlights the irony behind the practice — that the demand for phones that look completely new may itself be helping to sustain the repackaging process.

Once the devices reach their destination markets, vendors can present them as fresh stock, while buyers hand over huge sums believing they have purchased genuinely new phones.

The video has sparked conversations about how common such practices may be and how easily attractive packaging can create a false sense of security. For buyers who save for months to afford the latest smartphone, discovering later that the device was previously used or refurbished could be a painful experience, especially if battery, performance or warranty issues eventually emerge.

The situation raises an important question for anyone shopping for an expensive smartphone: when a phone looks brand-new, how can you be certain it actually is?

Buy from reputable outlets and licensed distributors who buy in bulk, not these Maw and Paw outfits.

Of course, even iPhones are repackaged in China and sent down to other countries too

Dey play I stopped using samsung because of cracked screen, ink on screen etc.

I have always suspected something was wrong somewhere because, tell me why phone of less than a year will be having ink on the screen, not that it fell down.

The most heart breaking one was that of my S series that I woke up to see having a dark spot at the top right side of the screen.

I thought of so many things, if I did not sleep alone in my room that night, I bet I would have thought someone mistakenly stepped on it.

To make it worse, the screen replacement is so high that it would almost buy yhu a new phone.
