Peter Obi Goofed On The Subsidy Question by Hedonisco(op):
I am incredibly miffed by how he foolishly affirmed support for the removal of subsidy when the question was put to him at the NBA conference in Port Harcourt. No other candidate there did.

This man doesn't seem to understand who he is up against. Whether he actually believes in subsidy removal or not is not the issue. He should have either skillfully deflected (see how Donald Duke deflected by saying he doesn't believe in subsidy, that it is a scam), or outrightly declare that on the strength of the evidence of the aftermath of subsidy removal by Tinubu, that he now believes that subsidy must be reinstated to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. This is populist, but it is also realist FAIR politics, considering how demonic the APC is and the fact that they played and are still playing far more evil politics.

At this point Peter Obi needs to step aside and ask his supporters to support Atiku.

Removing Tinubu is an imperative that is bigger than everything else. Nigeria should rather collapse or cease to exist than have Tinubu retain power. It is a matter of life and death.

No fumbling and wobbly 'gentlemanly' rubbish politics by Peter Obi should stand in the way of this categorical imperative.

I previously canvassed for a joint Atiku/Obi ticket as the invincible nuclear bomb, sure fire way to get rid of Tinubu at the ballot, but these two men's clumsiness didn't make this happen. So Peter Obi needs to comot for road since he does not understand the gravity of the task at hand. If he needs to be stampeded out of the race to pave the way for someone more brutal and serious like Atiku, then so should it be.

Either way Tinubu has to go, by hook or crook. The end will justify the means, whichever way.

LOL... Aminda, since your guy has successfully converted some Obidients to your group, do with them as you wish.

They been in pain since they publicly supported sob cee dee removal statement made by Atiku, only for their oga to refuse to follow suit.

Seriously, though, I still think Obi will backtrack on the subsidy issue. He usually copies Atiku, and I predicted he’d support Atiku’s stance—so I was shocked when he didn’t. The only reason I can think of is that he didn’t want to be accused of "follow-follow."
But mark my words: This prediction will come true. Obi will deny his NBA statement. He’ll either claim he was misquoted (like Oby did) or outright deny it. He’s no stranger to denying past statements—whether it’s meeting Abacha (despite previously admitting it) or forgetting his own words on food prices, only to later claim that reducing them would hurt farmers.
So, OP, be patient with your guy. He’ll most likely backtrack.

I agree with you. Obi should have maintained strategic silence or given a diplomatic answer like "we will review the situation" instead of giving a definitive answer. He demonstrated political naivety and is fast bleeding supporters as a result. He was the populist candidate. He had no business pandering to the capitalist mob just to be rated as the "consistent" candidate, whatever that means. He should have read the room but this is what happens when you run a one-man show and have no strategic advisers.

The ADC deliberately chose a party with the handshake logo for a reason. It was meant to signify a handshake across the Niger. An alliance that will rekindle the old Northern-Eastern Alliance. A lot of Southeasterners made huge sacrifices including men like Nwosu who resisted all manner of bribery and inducement to make his party the vehicle for the coalition at a time when Tinubu infiltrated all political parties. Obi prioritised his selfish interest and left the coalition, leaving men like Abaribe in the wilderness. Southeasterners should back the ADC in 2027 instead of voting out of emotions. 2027 will be Atiku’s last lap, win or lose.

Obi supporting subsidy removal is blessing to Atiku. Potentially, votes would be split to a large extent between subsidy removal supporters of Tinubu and Obi, while the subsidy return support base of Atiku remains untouched.

Succinctly put. A huge chunk of Obi's supporters who wants subsidy back will now support Atiku while Tinubu and Obi are left battling out the few who prefer subsidy gone.

I can't believe what my eyes are seeing on this thread. Are you sure I am reading something from Nigerians or people from another planet altogether.
Imagine a situation whereby the impoverished people are encouraging their leaders to publicly lie to them and promise them things they have no intention of doing.
So you want, for the sake of politics,Obi to promise that he would restore fuel subsidy, or deflect the question even when he clearly doesn't believe in it? So that tomorrow, you'd be going about calling him an insincere and unstable man just to massage Atiku's ego?
All of you are not yet serious in that country.

This is a presidential race. Not a contest for who is more moral. Only a fool says "I cannot change my mind". On the contrary, it's an attribute of a good leader to be able to change his mind in light of new evidence. Even if he wouldn't change his mind, strategic silence is a thing in politics. Otherwise, why are you even a politician? Go try other endeavours.

Look what Atiku has reduced Tinubu's lackeys to. You all have resigned to your fates and are now hoping on rigging. Atiku just cancelled Christmas on your behinds. If Tinubu couldn't rig Lagos in 2023 and Osun in 2023 and 2026, he wouldn't be able to rig the 2027 elections. 2027 will be too big to rig!

Atiku has not backed down, it seems Rotimi and others are the ones speaking for him and he is still insisting on the removal. This is why I don't want anyone to speak for these candidates, they must all speak for themselves

No one said he should lie, but rather deflect. If Obi says he supports subsidy removal even when Nigerians are the ones suffering it the most, it’s better he just go with Tinubu and not contest any more.

He could have given a different answer but not necessarily lie.

An alliance that will rekindle the old Northern-Eastern Alliance.
An alliance infers people on equal terms working together, a Northern - Eastern alliance that never once produced a Nigerian Ndigbo president àbi. Before you mention Owelle, he was ceremonial with zero political powers.

It's a partnership with a senior partner and a junior one, mentality of the senior one arrogantly expressed by Atiku in not respecting PDP zonal agreement to allow Ndigbo produce a Presidential candidate for the most powerful party then.

Oga, Ndigbo now realise your alliance is not real and are thankfully detaching from it.

The Southwest under Tinubu was in opposition until 2015 when Buhari’s CPC and Tinubu's ACN came together to form the APC. Tinubu was aiming to deputise Buhari but nominated Osinbajo when that couldn't fly. The North rewarded him with 5.6m votes after that. Was that an alliance on unequal terms? Don't forget that Tinubu supported Ribadu and Atiku in the past but didn't say Emi lokan until he supported Buhari and won. Politics is not taught in class.

What point are you making in countering mine? Did President Buhari try to shoehorn a Northerner in after his two terms?

By the way, President Tinubu did not aim to deputise, he himself said a Muslim Mislim ticket would not fly at that point so nominated Prof Osinbajo.
