Acid reflux

Avoid overfeeding at nights
..always have Gaviscon, omeprazole caps or mistmag at home.

Thank God for your life.

Sometimes you hear of people who slept and never woke up and today, i almost experienced the same thing and honestly, if i had not woken up the time i did, i am pretty sure it would have been a sad story.

so this morning i was very hungry. I didn't eat much yesterday night or during the day, so the hunger was very intense. you know those morning hunger that comes with torture na.

i then decided to cook something. my initial intention was to buy noodles (hungry man) and cook but when i got to the store, i saw macaroni and i just thought to myself, it has been long i ate macaroni o. so i bought it and came home to prepare it instead.

i cooked this with beans and everything. Honestly i made it better than i expected considering the lack of fish. and the money was like my last card.

but it was delicious anyways. so i ate a good portion from the food. i was filled but had to fetch a second servings for myself because i really enjoyed it.

that was the mistake i made. that second serving. my stomach began to pain me not so much to call it stomach ache. but just enough for me to be in distress.

so i said let me lie down. i placed my phone on a phone stand and lay belle flat on the floor with my face down on the pillow. Combined with the overfed belle, omo naso sleep carry me o.
here
only for me to wake up suddenly like 10 minutes later struggling to breathe.

I was shocked and confused at the same time and scared. very scared because my chest was burning, it's like the acid in my stomach all moved to my chest and lungs.

you know that pain that comes with something getting into your airway when you eating? that's exactly the kind of pains i was in. i could literally fill the food moving from my stomach back to my throat and almost in my mouth.

Till this evening i can still fill the taste in my mouth, my chest is still burning and i am still scared of going to eat the food even though i am currently very hungry.

sometimes, i just wonder, what if i hadn't woken up by the time i did? because the moment i woke up, i stood up and had to maintain that standing position for a while even though i was feeling dizzy and irritated. this helped to push the food down.

it took me a while to understand that i was regurgitating probably because i slept on a filled stomach. much like squeezing an air filled balloon, but in this case, the content of my stomach was been pushed out by the force of my weight on it against the ground.

honestly, the experience could have gone really bad because the food could have rushed into my lungs and caused severe respiratory distress with people coming it to find food acid rushing out of my mouth and nostrils

Had it been you are a Muslim, this will not happens to you bcus we've been told by our noble prophet (may peace and blessings of God be with him) that you should divide your stomach into 3, one for air, one for water and one for food. Also we're told 5o sit on the right hand side of our body in other not to pressure the heart and stomach. Also not to sleep immediately after eating.

Poor you! Legumes generally causes gas, especially when not soaked for while before cooking. That caused your first discomfort. Same beans also causes indigestion and acid reflux, and i can imagine as a typical Nigerian you probably added plenty pepper too!

What you experienced is Pulmonary aspiration: when stomach acid enters the windpipe and lungs directly. It can be a very painful and scary experience especially when it happens when sleeping.

That's what yorubas call Ataa sapa milorii. Pele, it'd pass

If you have it eaten for 10 hours or more, please don't start with chewable food.

You are supposed to lie on your side (especially left side) or with your head a bit elevated
You're not supposed to lie immediately after eating until 3 hours. Preferably, do some walking around prior to lying down.

Those are symptoms of Ulcer too. Get those Gestid syrup drugs or its other type and thank me later.

Some food don't just digest easily. Our bodies are very different, also aging brings some drastic changes to your intestines whether you want it to happen or not (or believe or not). Suffice to say what you may eat conveniently at 12, and have playing time may not be possible at 25. Every 5 years the body changes. (From age 5 to 10 to 15 etc you get the gist). So you can't eat like an elephant forever.

Just get that drug at home. It's for fast digestion and to rescue on days like you just described.

Shalom

So this is why they say not to put babies flat on their belly after eating. Never imagined adults would experience the same. Glad you're ok

But how can you eat to your full and lay on the same stomach

... After eating is best to situp until you feel comfortable to lay down but you can lie down just make sure your head is elevated with a pillow, possible two pillows and your back on the bed or floor

I have experienced that too. But mine, the mixture of the food was coming out through my nose. It usually happens when you overfeed and go on to sleep without proper digestion of the food.

Is macaroni a good food? Macaroni has nothing inside to nourish the body. With that, the guy overfed himself and lied down immediately face down, it's like someone that wants to commit suicide. Even without eating, it is risky sleeping with your face down

You slept (lay down) immediately after eating.. Is acid reflux a joke to you?
Never do this but if you must, do so on your back with head raised 30, 45 or 60 degrees short term.
Any thing wrong in coming from a farming village and being in med school? Don't framers train children in school. Change your mentality!

Acid regurgitation and acid refluxes are very common phenomenon and this cannot kill you because once you begin to feel unrest while asleep, your brain either in your head or in your stomach(yes, I know what you're thinking!)would signal your body to wake up! The human body will always try to survive!

You think because your brain tries to survive something means you'll survive?

Variables? Yes! You are quite healthy, thats why the discomfort signals your body sent was processed by your brain and it woke you up to take remedial steps!

God forbids these distress signals weren't properly processed, it would be a different case by now hence my reaffirmed stance on my original post, “the human body will always try to survive any situatuon”, even when survival isn't guaranteed!.

———-
Survival is one of the deepest biological drives in the human body.

Your body is constantly making adjustments—often without your conscious involvement—to keep you alive:

* 🫀 Heart rate changes to maintain blood flow when you’re stressed, exercising, or losing blood.
* 🫁 Breathing adjusts automatically to keep oxygen and carbon dioxide within workable ranges.
* 🌡️ Temperature regulation triggers sweating, shivering, vasoconstriction, and other responses.
* 🩸 Blood clotting rapidly seals damaged vessels after an injury.
* 🧠 Fight-or-flight redirects resources toward immediate survival when the brain detects danger.
* 🍬 Blood glucose regulation keeps the brain and other organs supplied with energy even when food isn’t immediately available.
* 💧 Thirst and hormonal responses push you to restore water and electrolyte balance.
* 🧬 Healing and immune responses attempt to repair damage and eliminate threats.

And what’s particularly fascinating is that the body doesn’t need your permission. You can consciously decide to hold your breath, for example, but eventually the rising CO₂ level triggers increasingly powerful signals to breathe.

There is an important caveat, though: the body doesn’t guarantee survival. It can compensate remarkably far, but there are physical limits—severe trauma, prolonged oxygen deprivation, extreme temperatures, toxins, infections, and organ failure can overwhelm those mechanisms.

In a sense, the body is running a continuous background programme:

“Keep the system operational for as long as physically possible.”

That’s why humans can sometimes survive circumstances that seem completely incompatible with life. The body isn’t passive when things go wrong—it actively fights to restore equilibrium.
